There are places I'll remember, all my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better. Some have gone and some remain.
All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends, I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living. In my life, I've loved them all.
In my life, I've loved you more.

(Remember her??) Carl, I thank you so very, very much for being my "partner" in all of this. There is absolutely no way, we could have done the reunions or this website without YOU! Thank you, not only for your generosity, but for your 35+ YEAR FRIENDSHIP!! You are the MAN! On behalf of all your classmates, I appreciate your efforts in keeping the flame burning brightly! (11/9/05)

OCTOBER 2005

JIM SPENCER '71
in San Antonio, Texas has made a generous donation to this website and he was only a Mustang for half-a-semester back in 1967!! Jim found this website and was fascinated by it. His family has lived in the neighborhood since1965 and when John Jay opened in 1967, he was part of the freshmen class, but transferred to a private school. He still remained friends with everyone in the neighborhood. Well, like I have always said, "Once a Mustang, always a Mustang! So, welcome back to the corral, Jimbo! He writes... Dennis, I really do appreciate the work you have done to gather together all the information contained on your site. I originally found your site from the article about "Captain Gus" in the San Antonio Express News". I vaguely remember you being on the show but by that time I was already more interested in girls than cartoons. I still remember that SANDY WOODS ('70) and her family along with her cousins RICK KIEFER ('72), BOB KIEFFER ('73) and the other siblings lived across the street from me. All in all the stuff on your web site brings back a lot of good memories. KIM COLLIER ('72) used to take piano lessons from my mom! I now work at Southwest Research Institute and really enjoy my work. My daughter lives just a stone's throw from Jay and I have a 12 year old granddaughter who will be in the John Jay "Class of 2012". Well, thanks for the great website. Thanks a bunch and good luck." ---Jimbo, I'm glad you found this website and thank you so much for the generous donation to keep the website going, as well as your pledge to keep on giving. That means a lot. All the best to you, my friend. (10/1/05)

SEPTEMBER 2005

CATHY BACON '70 in Hampton, Virginia not only sent in a donation for this website, but she MUGGED me and sent it in a BEATLE-ful package. She just got back from England and brought me back a gorgeous BEATLES coffee (or tea) cup. It is absolutely FAB! Cathy recently retired as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, having even served at the Pentagon. Cathy, thanks so much for the donation and extra tahnks for the Beatles mug. You have been so wonderful to me and the website over these many years! I hope you're enjoying retirement! Hope to see you at the next reunion down the line! (9/5/05)

ANONYMOUS DONOR ('72) somewhere far far away.... doesn't want me to reveal who they are, has made a tremendous donation to this website. PAM MINNEMAN ('73) in Austin, Texas has sent in her second consecutive annual donation for this website and I nearly had a stroke!! Her donation was so GENEROUS, that combined with the ones that I received earlier this month, I can pay for the next FULL BASIC YEAR for the website IN ADVANCE!!!!!  I will still have to pay for any EXTRA TRAFFIC downloads each month, if needed, but at least I know, August 2005-to-August 2006, is now assured and paid for!!! Because of the wonderful people like YOU and those listed below, I can keep the flame burning as brightly and as long , as possible! (7/7/05)

MARK LOISELLE ('70)
in Trevor, Wisconsin, not only sent in his annual contribution to keep the website flame burning brightly, but he also sent me TWO PAIR OF UNDERWEAR!! Let me explain. Mark works for Jockey, Inc. the underwear people. He's like one of the head management honchos at one of their manufacturing sites. Well, I have often kidded Mark about sending me some free Jockey shorts because, well, I have a hard-to-fit keester, ya' might say. I won't mention what size my skivvies are, but Reverend Billy Graham uses my old ones as revival tents! My butt has it's own zip code! When I walk backwards, a beeping noise starts sounding!! Anyway, Mark, the looneytoon that he is, sent me two pair of firm fitting, comfortable, briefs!! Damn, I'll look good in these! Dude, you crack me up!!!!! What a hoot. Thanks for the donation to the website and thanks for the clean underwear! I'll wear them to the reunion for all to see!! (7/5/05)

MICHELLE SMITH ('70)
in Tampa, Florida sent in her wonderful donation for the website. Michelle's family moved from San Antonio just 2 DAYS after graduation and she hasn't been back since then! It is going to be so cool to see her, again, after all these many years! She sent me an email..."
Dear Dennis, You are very sweet! It was my pleasure to send in a donation for the website. I have been one the countless numbers who wait, with bated breath, for the next installment of "The John Jay Saga!" May I also say, the saga continues largely because of YOU! For those of us, who have been out of the "loop" for quite awhile it affords us the opportunity to catch up and somehow feel "connected." I do not think that any of us who tap in to the web site regularly take for granted the time and energy required to maintain the site! I don't know how you manage it! The personal touch that you give "us" is amazing! This attention truly does make us feel bonded, sort of like a large family! Thank you for all that you do! Huge thanks also to Danny, Linda, Carol and the others who are working to put the events together! < style="font-style: italic;">I am looking forward to my return to the "corral!" LOL! This sent with some of that "love that is all around," you often speak of." --- Michelle, it is so great to know that you're coming to the reunion and I can't wait till ya' get here. Thanks so much for your generous donation! It's because of wonderful people like YOU that I enjoy organizing our reunions. (7/2/05)

PHILLIP TURNER ('72) in Ocoee, Florida was one of the first three donations on July 1. He sent has SPECTACULAR donation along with a letter that actually moved me to tears. Sometimes, I wonder if I get too involved in doing these reunions every five years, but after what Phillip has to say in his letter, maybe I am doing some good after all. He writes... "Dear Dennis, I have enclosed a check to help with your website needs. Allow this to be a small token of my thanks for your enormous efforts. My wife and I will be attending the reunion events on both nights and we are eager to see those who made part of my life what it is today. I want to thanks them and my wife wants to blame them! LOL Many of the brothers and sisters, some of whoem I have lost touch with as much as 35 years ago, will be in attendance. Already, I have met with one who was my boyhood brother of different parents. He came all the way from San Antonio to Orlando, Florida to see me for only one hour. Nothing could replace that joyful moment and I owe it to you and your website for that is how we connected. There is no way the alumni could possibly acknowledge the personal sacrifice of time, money, sweat and tears (let alone sanity) that you have expended putting this project together. It is obviously a labor of love. You deserve to much more than any of us can return individually. It is my sincere hope that the joy I have already experienced connecting with lost loved ones is returned to you expptentially from all who attends this reunion and in a way that is measureable, tangible and meaningful to you. We love you, Dennis. This wouldn't have happened without YOU. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." ---Phil, I am humbled by your words. Because of what you have expressed to me, I know in my heart that there is no greater proof to me of the saying that I always use in signing-off on my emails to everyone, that LOVE IS ALL AROUND.  Thank you, my friend, for the generosity of your financial donation and the generosity of your kind spirit. See you in two weeks. (7/1/05)

JOHN WOOLLEN ('70) in Lafayette, Louisiana emailed me the other day to let me know he was sending me a donation check for this website and it arrived, today, just as he promised. It is a WHOPPING generous contribution and I thank you for being so kind. In John's email, he said he hasn't been able to attend any of the reunions that we've had in that past 35 years due to varios reasons, especially schedules. Besides, he didn't think that anyone would remember him, anyway. Well, John, I hear that quite often from a lot from people and I have to say, WRONG! There's only ONE John Woollen that I know and remember out of the 6,000,000,000 people on this planet, Dude! The way I look at it, if any of us are remembered by even ONE person, then we have touched the life of someone special. Let me tell you that I remember you and so do many, many others. You have touched our lives with your friendship, humor and caring spirit.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donation for the website. It will go a long way in keeping the flame burning. This reunion won't be complete without the opportunity to see you after 35 years. I look forward to seeing you someday, soon. Hell, do you even remember, me?? So, until then, take care, my friend! And THANK YOU, again. (7/1/05)

PAM CHABAK ('70) in beautiful Austin, Texas can't make the reunion at this point, but she's trying to see what she can do. In the meantime, Pam mailed in an OUTSTANDING donation for this website. If you look in the dictionary under the phrase, "A classy lady," you'd find her photo next to the definition! I swear. She has always been so nice and supportive of me, since I started this stuff so many years ago. Pam, I hope your schedule works out and that you're able to make the reunion, even at the last minute. I know Stormy Bradbury ('71) and I would be thrilled!! Thank you, sweetie. (7/1/05)

THOMAS "TOMMY" McDUFF ('70) in Inez, near Victoria, Texas, died on Friday, November 18, 2005, as the result of a car accident. He was returning from his son's (a senior) high school football playoff game. Tom may have fallen asleep returning from the game, lost control of his car, ran into a culvert and died at the accident scene. He leaves behind five children and his new fiancee, April Madrigal, with whom he had just bought a new house in Victoria.  April can be emailed by clicking on Tommy's name at the start of this notice. I am sure she will forward messages to his children and family. Our prayers and sympathies to Tommy's family in this time of sorrow and grief.

A SMALL, SMALL WORLD...
I got a phone call, today 11/29/05, from classmate TONY SORIA ('70) in California. After he got my email about Tommy's accident, he call classmate DAVID McEATHRON ('70), who lives in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin. David had a long career as a state trooper with the Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety). As it turns out, David's son, also went into law enforcement and he was the officer on the scene at Tommy accident/death.

Visitation for Tommy McDuff was held on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 from 7:00-8:00PM and a rosary to start at 8:00PM both at Rosewood Funeral Chapels, 3304 Mockingbird Lane in Victoria. Phone: (361) 573-4546. A Mass was held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edna/Inez, Texas (near Victoria), Phone: (361) 782-3181. Here is the email that I received from his fiancee, April...
"
Dennis, I am writing you on behalf of the Thomas McDuff.  I am his fiancee April Madrigal.  On Friday, November 18, 2005 Tom was in a very serious one vehicle accident returning home from a playoff football game and passed away.  I wanted to notify you because Tom spoke so highly of you and would have wanted you and his classmates to know. WORDS FROM CLASSMATES

"Dennis, Thanks so much for informing everyone of the passing of Tommy.  Many of you may or may not know that he was my high school sweetheart my freshman thru junior year.  He was such a wonderful person.  Always smiling, laughing and making others laugh.  I have so many pictures from that time.  When he played baseball, dressed up for dress up day, double dating with my sister, Rene Bartee and Wally Wible….going the San Pedro Drive-In with Tyrone Powers and Linda Stuart, Pam Castle and Rick Crawford. It is to this day very memorable.  He is now is a safe place with his parents and mine. My thoughts and prayers are with Tommy's brother Jimmy, Tommy's fiancée April, and his children. If, by chance, his children would like any of the pictures etc… that I have, they can email me and I will glady give them anything that I have that will help them through this time." -Yvonne Bartee ('73) 11/21/06

"Dear Dennis, Thank you for letting us know the news about Tommy. I am so very sorry to hear that Tommy has passed away! I was disappointed that Tommy was not able to attend the reunion because of health reasons the summer. He was one of the people I looked forward to seeing. I wondered what had become of this larger than life personality! I remember him as a very a nice boy with a good heart. He was always kind and very friendly and had such a good sense of humor and one could not help but laugh when Tommy was around! What a great smile he had! Even our teachers had a hard time keeping a straight face at some of his antics. He was also a gifted athlete!  I wish peace to his family and to his fiance'. It is difficult to understand why these things happen. God willing, we look forward to being with our friends and family who have gone before us one day! It must be difficult to pass this kind of news on. Thank you, Dennis for caring enough to share both the good new, as well as, the bad and difficult news, and keeping us connected!" -Michelle Smith ('70) 11/19/05

"I am extremely saddened by the news of Tommy's death.  Please be sure to pass on my condolences to his family and friends." -Betty Consani ('70) 11/19/05

"Dennis, here, while still on duty in the middle east, I am praying for Tommy and his family, as well. Another sad blow to our ranks of graduates from John Jay High." -George Hunter '70 11/30/05

TSGT ALVIN ANDERSON  (Frank), father of our classmates, LINDA ANDERSON ‘70, JANICE ANDERSON (‘7?) and LETHA ANDERSON (‘86) died on August 15, 2005, after a battle with cancer. He was a retired drill sergeant at Lackland AFB and was buried at First Memorial Cemetery on Highway 16 South, where his wife is buried. Mr. Anderson was 74 years old. He was the owner of Roberto’s Pizza on Old Hwy 90 West, next to the Old Gateway Motel. Many students worked at Roberto’s Pizza over the years. Linda wrote me saying, “Dennis I can't begin to share how the feelings of losing parents has such an impact on adult children. Hospice care is bittersweet, they are hope passing in dignity, but yet to witness them leaving their bodies is an emotion one never forgets. We were very blessed to have great parents, and miss them tremendously. It is like we have to grow up now, and prepare for our turn. My sister, Janice's two boys now in the military, one is in Iraq in the Army infantry, and the other is in training for flight refueling in the Air Force. My sister, Letha is teaching first grade at the elementary school on Potranco near Castroville.  As for me, I am still working and aging gracefully, as I see most of the classmates are.  Love to all, Cherish your parents, and demand that your children respect you also." ---Linda, on behalf of all your fellow Mustangs, please, know that you and your family are in our prayers. We missed you at the reunion and we look forward to seeing you at the next one down the line. God bless your family. (9/5/05)

My appreciation to GLENN HUTTO ('71) for bringing this to my attention. (8/17/05) UPDATE 8/19/05: Last night I attended the visitaion at the funeral home. I spent about 90 minutes there and spent some time with Mimi, David and Marguerite. I had never met Mr. or Mrs. Verbois before. Mrs. Verbois came up to me and she introduced herself and said she knew who I was. She said her kids talk about me all the time and she knew I was the one that does the reunions. She held my hand as we talked and I have never ever felt so comfortable with someone who was basically a total stranger to me. She is so warm, caring and loving. What a wonderful lady Mrs. Verbois is. DANNY PADRON ('69) came to the visitation and Mimi let me on on a little secret--- Danny was her first high school boyfriend! He blushed when she told me! LOL Much to my surprise another classmate came in- JIM PROCTOR ('71)! I hadn't seen him in many many years. In the old days, the Proctors lived across the street from the Verbois family. It was great seeing Jim and I added him to the email list.

A PLEA FROM A 1969 MUSTANG'S DAUGHTER
Hello, I don't know how to start off this letter, so bare with me. I've been having dreams about my mother to look for photos of her or just find out about her. I tried the internet and looked up all I could and then, ran into your website. You see, my mother is a graduate of John Jay High School, Senior Class of 1969 Her name was Elizabeth JoAnn Johnson. I think the senior photo of her lists her name as JoAnn Elizabeth Johnson, as she went my her middle name.Unfortunately, she was killed in 1982 by my father. I was 10 years old at the time and to this day I have nothing of her other than a family portrait of her, my father and me from 1971. I found her graduation picture in your website and I can't even begin to tell you how grateful I am to have found such a photo. She looks so beautiful. Would you happen to know if the person who has the year book has prom pictures of any sort of the senior class? I would love to see one of my mother. I remember once, I saw a prom photo of my mother standing with a handsome genteman, but when I tried to get it, to get a closer look, my grandmother took it away and I never saw it again. I don't know if you recall, but back in 1982 my father shot my mother at work at the (back then) Winn's store at General McMullen and Commerce Street. It made headlines all over the place. Believe it or not, my father got out of prison after just 3 years, on good behavior and is around still today. Well i just wanted to give you a rundown on this lost senior from 1969 and wanted to thank you for her lovely photo on your website. Hopefully your friend has prom pictures from back then...Thank you, Elizabeth O. Flores

Elizabeth, thank you for writing about your mother. Sorry for the tragic death of your mom. I looked at her photo and, while she looks familiar, I did not know her. As for the prom pictures, I am sorry but I don't have any such photos. All yearbook photos come from my book. I will look through the yearbook to see if there are any of your mom. I did include a link to your email address on your name above and ask any and all classmates that might have known your mother, to contact you. I hope that helps. I hope that something turn up for you. Feel free to stay in touch with us and I invite you to attend our activities in her place if that's something you'd like to do. ---Dennis

YVONNE WARREN ('72) Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (the base, not the prison) sent me an email... "Hi Dennis, just got finished viewing all the pics from the reunions, they are great.  Remember me? Teresa Warrens sister from Class of 72.  It’s been about 10 years now since I wrote latest being……..Let’s see last time we spoke I’d just retired from the Air Force and went to work for the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and am still traveling all over the world.  The company sent me to Florida for 3 years, Germany for 5 years and have been at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for the past year (the post not the prison) ha ha  I am remarried now to a Brit…..yep a Brit, a wonderful man, I dragged away from his country to the big American PX, sigh… It was good to see all the classmates of 1970, since I knew more of them from Teresa and her xhusband Mark Loiselle and of course my x-husband James “Bamba” Baum ('70)They all looked real good.  Just got off the phone with Vera (James sister), yes we have hung in there since we first met in freshman year, in fact she told me of the web page.  Well I’ve listed my latest so until next time. Take Care." ---Good to hear from you, Yvonne! Thanks for the update and keeping in touch. (11/18/05)

RANDY PEARSON ('71)
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has MUGGED me BIG time. Now, get a load of this! Last Saturday, I'm watching a replay of Super Bowl X on ESPN. The Pittsbugh Steelers are kicking Roger Staubach's butt all over the field. It hurts to watch the replay even after all these years. Anyway, there's a knock at my front door. It's the mailman. He says he's leaving a package on my front porch. I said, "FINE." After a few minutes, I get up, open the door and there's a brown box on my porch. I pick it up, close the door and go back to my chair. I'm watching the rest of the game while I tear open the box after seeing that it's from Randy Pearson. I look up at the TV at just the right moment to see Terry Bradshaw complete a long pass down field to Lynn Swan for a touchdown. DAMN!! Now, y'all ain't gonna believe this next part. I finish opening the box and the first thing I see is a BRIGHT YELLOW TERRYCLOTH TOWEL WITH THE STEELERS LOGO ON IT!! and wrapped in bubble wrap and plastic bags is a PITTSBUGH STEELERS COFFEE MUG!! I can't beleive the coincidence!! It blows my mind!!! What are the chances that I get this box, open this box and all while I'm watching the Steelers kick Cowboy butt on TV!??!!  The mug is gorgeous and huge!!! In the bottom of the box was a note, which basically said.... "Dennis, back in October, we were in Austin and came down to San Antonio and stopped by your house on Saturday the 8th and you weren't home. Unfortunately, we had also forgotten and left your Steelers coffee mug in Austin after partying WAY too much on Friday night! So, here's the mug! I did want to say, thanks to you and your reunion and website efforts that I was able to hook up with an old Jay friend after 30+ years, JIM PROCTOR ('71) and his lovely wife, Diane. It really felt like Jim and I picked up our friendship right we we left off after 35 years of no contact. If not for your posting his email address on your website, this would not have been possible. Once again, your tireless efforts have allowed me to reconnect with another Jay classmate. Thanks so much, Dennis. I know you're a Dallas Cowboy fan, so feel free to add some BAILEY's to your coffee in the Steelers mug and be sure to wave the "Terrible Towel." Be cool!" ---Randy, thanks for the magnificent mug, terrific towel and notable note! I appreciate your friendship and the gifts! I think it's great that you and Jim got back in touch after all these years. Take care, my friend, and if we ever do another reunion, I hope you'll be there!! (11/9/05)

OCTOBER 2005

MIKE DUNAGAN
'75, somewhere in Afghanistan/Iraq, had his sister, ROBERTA DUNAGAN ('72) here in San Antonio, MUG ME! There I was, sitting in my underwear in my living room watching a Dallas Cowboys football game when there's a knock on my door! I yelled, "Who is it?" and Roberta identified herself. I explained that I was in my underwear and she said she was dropping off a coffee mug from her brother. It is a beautiful mug from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mike- thanks for the coffee mug and Roberta- thanks for not wanting to see me in my underwear (although, just say the word and I'll be happy to model for ya'! LOL (10/1/05)

SEPTEMBER 2005

MICHELLE SMITH ('70)
Miami, Florida has some sad news to share with us... "
Hey Dennis, How are you? I hope that you are well! I wanted to let you know that I lost my youngest sister, Gaby, Wednesday evening, Sept. 21st. She had been battling breast cancer for a little over two years. She was unfortunate to have gotten a very aggressive variety that continued to spread though out her body. She was very courageous in her struggle. She was only forty-six years old! I was constantly in awe of her and the grace with which she lived. I am doing okay but once the funeral is over and life returns to a slower pace I would imagine that the real impact will take effect. My mother has now lost two of her five children and my father. I feel bad for her. She is amazing in her strength! Gaby has two young daughters and a really great husband. I hate this disease and the sorrow it causes! Hug your family! I remember that your sister, Linda and your mother both had battles of their own with cancer not to long ago. Take care of yourself!" ---Dear Michelle, I am so sorry to hear the news of your sister's passing. I guess, if y'all hadn't been transfered right after you gradauted from Jay, she would have been in the class of '72. It was such a pleasure meeting your mom at the reunion and I'm glad you brought her with you. She smiled when I reminded her that your dad and my parents all went to school together back in New York. On behalf of all your classmates from John Jay, please accept our deepest sympathies and warmest prayers for you, your mom, and your entire family. I really enjoy hearing from you and please stay in touch, sweetie. (9/27/05)

SUSANNE SCHLAEGER ('72) in South Dakota is the SECOND Schlaeger sister to make a LOVE CONNECTION as a result of the reunion!! Here's what she has to say... "Dearest Dennis, or should I say Cupid,It seems as if the Reunion was more than just a joyful get-together for yet another Schlaeger sister. On the 4th of July I began seeing a wonderful gentleman here in South Dakota. One of the things we found we had in common was San Antonio- he had worked for Catering by Rosemary as an Executive Chef from 1987 to 1992. Well, while I was away for the reunion, back in July, he discovered that he missed me horribly, so much so, that after asking my son's permission to date me, we have been almost inseparable. Recently, he was offered a position in San Antonio, which he accepted and will begin next Wednesday, Sept. 31st. To make a long story short, I am currently packing, my brother is hunting for a house for me and I will, after 24 years, be returning to my beloved Texas in time for Eileen and George's wedding! (They hooked up at the reunion at the reunion!!) I don't understand your "powers", but am ever so thankful for your never-ending efforts at keeping the flame alive. You are extraordinary! See you soon!" ---Sus, thanks so much for your kind words and I am so happy for you. That is wonderful. Guess we'll have to have dinner when ya get here so you can introduce him to me. HEY! Let's make it a LOVE CONNECTION for all three Schlaeger sisters... Christine is single, right?? CHRIS WILL YOU MARRY ME????  A pre-nup is fine with me. LOL (9/27/05)

SUZANNE BRETZKE ('74) Castroville, Texas sent in an email to me for the first time... "Dear Dennis, Wow! I just started receiving your Mustang e-mails and was completely amazed at what you've done to keep alumni in touch! I had heard about the website and about the reunions that you have put together for so many years now, but your newsletter blew me away!   Thank you deeply from the bottom of my heart...I am very grateful to you.My name is Suzanne "Bretzke" Stinson and am a '74 graduate. I knew your brothers Tommy and Bobby in high school! I have attended my respective reunions, but never the annual ones that you have set up. Your organization and will to keep us all together is mind-boggling, and again, so much appreciated! It is so interesting to hear what other alumni are doing, even if I never knew them...please keep me on your email list. Also if there is a fee for this or anything...let me know. With sincere appreciation." ---Suz, it's great to hear from you and hope that you'll stay in touch. Donations for this website are always appreciated. (9/27/05)

HURRICANE KATRINA
LEROI STOVALL ('70) in Longbeach, Mississippi (near Gulfport) was hit hard by the hurricane and he sent me an email this week, "Dear Dennis, this is my first time back on the net since the hurricane. Katrina was not fun. We lost 13 giant pine trees, but only one hit the house. Two bedrooms were damaged, but not totaled. God Bless American bricklayers. We are all fine, just have some New Orleans family as extended guests. Love is all around here, especially thanks to all the help that has been pouring into the region from Texas and the rest of USA. Lots of damage, but not as many dead as we expected, but our missing persons ads in the paper have doubled over the last week. Good to be alive. GOD Bless Texas for taking in all the refugees!" ---Leroi, it's good to know that you and the family are safe. Please know that our prayers are with you and I am certain that classsmates have been giving generosuly to the Red Cross and Salvation Army relief funds. Take care and keep my posted and anything that we can all help you with. Love IS all around. (9/15/05)

CHUCK KOSTMAYER ('70)
who lives in Mobile, Alabama, owns a few rental homes and tells me that his property has sustained over $250,000 in damages with 5ft of water in his homes. He called me on his cell phone saying that his family was being eaten alive by mosquitos, with no electricity, no water, no fuel for his generator and conditions were deteriorating rapidly. He said he has not heard from CHUCK SPITZER ('70) who also lives in Mobile. He asked if I had heard from anyone that we knew who lives in Louisiana and I said no. Among our classmates who live there are CATHIE BOOTH ('70), and brothers BOB (WILKINSON) BROUSSARD ('70), and PAUL (WILKINSON) BROUSSARD ('69). If anyone has news on them, please let me (Dennis) know. Chuck, you hang in there! (9/5/05) see update below...

UPDATE FROM CHUCK: 9/10/05:
"Hello Dennis & Mustangs Things are better, but not normal. Power came back in town a few days ago, and came back yesterday at the family homestead at Navco. Gasoline is fairly easy to find now. Many stores are open, but many things you might need are scarce. You'd think Wal Mart was having a half price sale. The water is said safe to drink again in Mobile, but we still boil it to be sure. The first week was a stuggle to buy food and gas for the generator ect. Ever since it's been a daily struggle to pull my wet furniture & clothes out of the flooded house and fight mold and make repairs. The water was about shoulder deep outside our front door at Navco. Over the kitchen counters a couple inches inside. The living room wall is trying to seperate from the house and has several broken windows from the storm surge coming in and out. Our house in the bussiness district however had only minimal damage. My business sustained several hundred thousands of sollars damage, all total I lost many thousand of dollars in uninsured damages. No charity needed, thanks anyway. Help is rare to find. I hired three girls to help and two quit after the forst day. The only one left works every other day for a few hours. I want to thank all for the prayers & anyone who did anything to help, and I just can't understand why nobody seems to understand that south Mobile had thousands of flooded homes and serious damages. All here were affected to varying degrees. West Mobile, wasn't spared either, this is where my business is, and my parents house, probably only 13 miles east of Miss. and they say nearby Pascagoula near the state line was bad. I've not been to Pascagoula since, but have personaly spoken to and helped survivors from the Miss coast. We helped a family from Biloxi get airplane tickets to Calif. and my aunt from near Gulfport is now here with relatives. I want to say thanks to the president for the help, but this thing is just too massive. So far all I've seen is a few National Guard. Many thanks to the group of Mittenites who helped my elderly parents with their damages. They say God won't give you a bigger burden than you can handle. I must be a able to do more than I thought. The shock began to wear off a few days ago & nausea set in as I began to cope with reality, but now it's time to work, and pray. It could have been worse, and I'm thankful it wasn't. I think this time it's just us and God, this one is to massive for the government to help much. Praying for all of you.

CATHIE BOOTH ('70)
in Hammond, Louisiana was hit by the hurricane, I got an email from her, today...
"Dennis, we are in Hammond, Louisiana and are affected by the hurricane. I am using someone else's computer to send this. We are fine, but having to stay with my brother-in-law. We still don't have phone or electricity, but we are blessed compared to others and we are alive!!!  Thanks for thinking of us. Love and blessing." ---Cathie, you're in our prayers, Hang in there! (9/7/05)

UPDATE FROM CATHIE: 9/11/05:
"We are staying with my husband's brother and just got electricity at 7:30pm, Friday.  The heat went to 107 degrees at his house and we were so thankfu,l as the power came on. We even have a tent city for evacuees here in Hammond, LA and continue to need supplies for these folks. Still, no electric at my home and no damage to it but the mail is finally being delivered.  We are more blessed than some of the other ones. My sister, Terri Booth ('77 or '78), in Biloxi, Mississippi, got 3 feet of water in her trailer and the place where she worked, the Boontown Casino which is now totally gone.  Boontown is going to continue the pay for it's employees for the next couple of months. My sister's, Cindy Booth ('75?) husband works for the EPA and states it is real hard doing rescues down in the CBD. Please, everyone continue the prayers for all concern that we all continue to help one another through this time.  I love you all.  With many blessings."

KAREN COPAS ('77) in San Antonio, Texas has emailed me with news on her brother who loves in New Orleans... "Dennis, This is news about my brother, ROGER COPAS, '80. He is a General Manager for a Marriott Hotel in New Orleans. He and his family, wife Atena and 20 month old twins Abigail and Austin made it out of New Orleans in the afternoon of 27 August (Saturday). It took 17 hours to get to Dallas as they were diverted to Mississippi with all the closed exits. As there were no rooms in any hotels even for a general manager of a hotel he had to go into Dallas. They arrived at my house this week in good health but emotionally shattered. Their house in Slidell, Louisiana, was damaged by rising water and trees thru the roof. It was for sale and was to close to new buyers last Wednesday. Roger returned to the Louisiana on Saturday to attend meetings on which Marriott hotels could be up and running earliest. Yesterday was the first time he saw his house and the damage; it was mild in comparison to the devastation in other parts of the state and south. As a family, we all have faith in God and his plan and we need to look to him for guidance in these times now more than ever. They will be fine in time. All their losses were material and can eventually be replaced. They are all in good health and safe for now. His twins and wife will be staying in San Antonio until living arrangements can be made back in Louisiana." --- Karen thanks for the news on Roger. We all appreciate knowing that he's doing OK. If you can send him my email address so he can stay in touch with us and keep us all informed from the "inside," I would appreciate it. Your sister, STEPHANIE COPAS '71 came to The Guys meeting last month and I think she had a great time with us.  It was great seeing you at the reunion, too! Stay in touch. (9/6/05)

BETTY CONSANI ('70) in California offers this email... "Dennis, God Bless San Antonio and all the people there that are taking care of the displaced people from the Gulf Coast. I didn't know who else to thank when I heard that San Antonio was taking in the displaced and thought of you.  We in the San Francisco Bay Area are trying to do our part by sending money, food, generators, clothing and volunteers. Have a terrific holiday weekend." ---Betty, thanks for the kind words. San Antonio has really come through for the victims of the hurricane. Thousands of people are being cared for at shelters at the old Kelly AFB (now called Kelly USA). They are also being housed at the old Farah/Levi Straus plant and at the closed Windsor Park Mall. The Alamo City is doing its part as best we can. (9/5/05)

ALAN FREDERICK ('70) in Houston, Texas, sent me an email. Actually it was addressed from Alan and his wife, Donna. I'm not sure who wrote thism but here are these thoughts... "Dennis, My company had a plant in Westwego, Louisiana, just across the river from New Orleans. All 150 employees have lost everything.  Now times that by ten to include their relatives.  Think of all those homeless & jobless people.  They didn't ask to be relocated in Houston but here they are. I spoke today to one of my co-workers. He told me it is so bad that he & 15 other family members  will never go back.  They left with nothing but the clothes on their back. Alan & I may not have a lot money to give but we have gone thru our closets to offer clothing.  We have offered our home to share with those who have been left homeless.  Please help in relief effort.  You can give to Red Cross or any other charity but please give.  Please pass this message on to everyone." ---Alan and Donna, I am happy to share your message. It touches all our hearts. (9/5/05)

JAMES SPENCER ('72)
here in San Antonio, Texas has sent in an email of his memories... "Dear Dennis, A few weeks ago (August 2nd to be exact) I sent you an email asking if Joe Alston (Captain Gus) had been a ham radio operator - to jog your memory. Thanks for the reply and for putting me on your John Jay newsletter list. I didn't attend Jay for long but, growing up in the Lackland Terrace neighborhood, I knew several of the people you mentioned in your latest message. At that time, I lived on Buggywhip right across the street from Sandy Woods ('70) and her family. She was about two years older than me (I was around 11 or 12) and it was one of the joys of my life to watch her shooting baskets in her front yard or just walking for that matter. Yes, quite a nice looking "chick". I was friends with her younger brother David Woods and also remember she had a younger sister named Nancy Woods and another little brother named Kenny Woods. I remember Sandy had a boyfriend by the name of Dean Dunn. I hadn't thought of it for 30 years but its a name that's easy to remember. Her family all came from Rapid City, SD. The other person that was familiar was Chuck Booth. I remember we had a mutual friend who lived on Landing by the name of Jack Jilek. Its hard for me to believe he's a member of the Border Patrol, but then again, who would have thought I would be performing engineering evaluations of Space Shuttle tiles at Southwest Research Institute instead of going where everybody figured I would end up? I guess we were all smarter than we looked! Dennis, you mentioned Simmang's TV in your email and that's something I really remember well. It was just your average TV repair shop until the "Summer of Love" hippie times and then old grey haired Mr. Simmang grew his hair long and put up black light posters and it became a combination TV repair and "head" shop. Wow. I also ate at El Tipico's many times and headed up to the Mr.M's for whatever I could get with the deposits from the five or six bottles I scrounged up on the way. Its not a neighborhood that I would walk around in any more - at least not without a loaded concealed weapon - but then time does march on. I lived on Buggywhip from 1962 until 1969 and still know the area like the back of my hand. By the way, my "girlfriend" Judy (are 52 year olds allowed to have "girlfriends"?) lived for several years on the corner of Remuda Drive and Military Drive and her granddaughter went to Mary Hull Elementary. I took her to school every day and remember riding my bicycle to the school in the 60's. I assume you probably lived on the part of Remuda that ended at Rawhide St. and not the other discontinuous part of it that ran to Military. So take care, Dennis and I'll look forward to seeing more names I'm familiar with." ---Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Jim. We all appreciate it. (9/7/05)

PATRICIA WOODS ('69) in San Diego, California, has written to me for the first time... "Dennis, I'm sure don't remember me but I remember you and I enjoy your email and updates on information. SANDY (WOODS) DUNN ('70) is my sister and DEAN was a classmate of mine ('69). I am out here in the San Diego area and have been since late 1979.  I would have liked to have been at the reunion but I was expecting the birth of my third grandchild so had to be on call to head to Lake Tahoe, Nevada. I bet there are many past graduates, like myself, that read and enjoy all your news and you don't even know we are out here in cyberspace.  Job well done and much appreciated and enjoyed." ---Pat, thanks for your kind words. You're so wonderful to take the time to let me know how you're doing. We'll get together at the next reunion down the line! Take care and give a kiss to your newest grandchild for me! (9/5/05)

CATHY BACON ('70)
in Hampton, Virginia, not only sent in a donation for this website, but she MUGGED me and sent it in a BEATLE-ful package. (9/5/05)

MIMI VERBOIS ('69) MUGGED me at the reunion, along with two other people, for a total of FIVE mugs! Mimi brought me a commemorative mug from the Ronald Reagan museum/birthplace in Dixon, Illinois, where she lives.  It is so cool! CHUCK BOOTH ('71)  gave me an awesome official Border Patrol mug made of crystal and gold!! It is gorgeous! Chuck is stationed in Del Rio, Texas and works hard to protect our border! He said he has another, even cooler, mug to bring me! And DON GOODMAN ('70) brought me three mugs from Tennessee. Yeee haaa!! (9/5/05)

DEAN & SANDY (WOODS) DUNN ('69/'70), up near Dallas, has sent me a wonderful photo of the three of us at the reunion. I can't believe who YOUNG these two people look!! They've been married since Septemeber 28,1968 and neither of them look a day over 20 years old. I swear!! LOL Their friendship means so very much to me. Though I only get to see them every five years or so, these two people show me so much love. They are incredible! Dean, Sandy-- thank you so much for everything you do!! (9/5/05)

RENITA FOSTER ('71), a colonel in the U.S. Army, had orders to be shipped to Iraq in October, but the orders have been recalled. She is stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, which has been slated to close by the BRAC commission. Retirement is just around the corner and she'll be moving back here to San Antonio. She works in the Army public relations department and she is an amazing writer. I have really enjoyed reading her work over the years, as she copies me on a lot of her articles that appear in Army publications. (9/5/05)

RICK SANDOVAL ('71) has gone back to serve in Iraq for a second tour of duty. I don't know if he's linked up with GEORGE HUNTER ('70), this time around. George has been in the Middle East for a couple of years doing his part to preserve freedom in the U.S. and to foster it in other areas of the world. BOB FRAZIER '72 has returned to Cairo, Egypt, where he workes under the State Department, (9/5/05)

AUGUST 2005

EILEEN SCHLEAGER ('76) in South Dakota, MADE A REUNION LOVE CONNECTION!... I got this email..."Dear Dennis,I just wanted to let you know that thanks to you, I reconnected with George Haas ('75), who I dated 28 years ago. We are now engaged and will be married in San Antonio on October 15, exactly 3 months after we saw each other at the Friday social at John Jay. If you had not opened up the reunion to multiple years, we would not have run into each other again! Thank you, thank you! This adds new meaning to "love is all around." Best regards, Eileen Schlaeger." ---WOW! Congratulations on your engagement! This is so cool!! I am so happy for the both of you!! Have a wonderful life together! (8/12/05)

JEFF SPEAKS ('72)
in Fort Worth, Texas has sent me an email and it's been 35+ years since I've heard from him...
"Hello Dennis, yes it's me, Jeff Speaks and yes, 1972 was the year I graduated. Sorry I missed the reunion. I was in Hawaii last week and had dinner with Doug White. He said everyone had a great time. I signed the guest book a few minutes ago. The web site looks great. Everyone is thankful for what you're doing. I've been in Fort Worth for the last 12 years. My wife went to medical school here that's why we left San Antonio. I really want to come down for the August GUYS meeting, but my son is getting married end of the month and every weekend is booked but don't be surprised if I sneak up on you guys one Friday when you least expect it. I'll try and make it down end of Sept. if all goes well. Tell Ed Hobbs and Jack Matthews I said hello. Does Eddie still have the Chevelle? And would Jack still have the Nomad by any chance?? If so ask him how much he wants for it. Keep up the good work. I'll keep in touch and thanks." ---Jeff, it's great to hear from you! Yes, Ed still has his awesome Chevelle SS, but Jack sold the Nomad a long long time again. As soon as you get the chance to make a GUYS meeting, we'd love to see ya'! All the best to you, my long lost friend! (8/11/05)

JERRY  & BRENDA (MADDOX) POSTON ('71/'71)
in Clifton, Texas finally had the time to sit down and write up a little "bio" for me. Since it's been 30+ years since I had heard from him, I asked Jerry to bring me up to date on what he and Brenda have been up to. He says... "Dear Dennis,
Brenda Maddox and I, were married on October 26, 1972. We have been married for 33 years in October. Brenda and I have one daughter, Jennifer who graduated from Texas Christian University this May with a degree in Elementary Education. She was Suma Cum Laud, so I guess she takes after me. Don't go look up my grades. She is starting her first year as a 5th grade teacher in Ft Worth. She is also getting married January 14, 2006. We are very proud of her. After getting married Brenda and I moved to Ft Worth and I went to work for IBM. After a couple moves with the company, IBM means "I've Been Moved", Brenda joined IBM also in 1985. We had wonderful careers with IBM and after 17 years I left IBM and started my own Technology Services Company. I was fortunate to have great employees and our company grew fast. I sold the company to a public company in 1997. Brenda retired from IBM the day I sold the company. I became President of the public company for 18 months as part of the sales agreement. I retired when my contract was completed. Brenda and I bought a ranch in central Texas near Clifton and now enjoy the life of ranchers. I always wanted to be John Wayne and now get the opportunity to play at it. We have 15 horses and about 200 head of cattle, three cats and one dog. Each day brings new challenges but we really enjoy the country life. We also enjoy traveling and have been all over the world, China, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and South America. My sister Susan and her husband Bob live about 2 hours away in Ft Worth. My mom lives near my other sister, Emily near Denton, Texas. We have been blessed with a wonderful family. Life for us started right there at John Jay High and I wish we would have attended many of the reunions. I stayed in close contact with Rick Mahler and was with him the week before he died. What a shock for all of us. I wish I would have stayed in contact with all my high school friends. If our former classmates and friends happen to read this please feel free to email me a note. My email address is bosquecowboy@htcomp.net. Brenda's address is guess what, bosquecowgirl@htcomp.net. Dennis I hope this is what you were looking for!!!!" ---Yes, Jerry, this is exactly what  was looking for. It sounds as if you two have had a fascinating life these past 30+ years. Perhaps, the greatest accomplishment is your wonderful marriage. That is outstanding! Hey, if you got a horse big enough to hold me, I'll come up there and go riding with ya'! Thanks so much for bringing us to to take and don't lose touch with us ever again, my friend! (8/5/05)

RAY WHITWORTH ('73)
Terrell, Texas listened to and recorded an interview that I did today, LIVE on KTSA radio and it was carried on the website.  For goodness sakes, he lives up near Dallas!! The interviews was about me on the Captain Gus show over 20 years ago. Ray writes... “MORTIMER SPEAKS! Dennis, Great interview! I recorded it and tried to place it on my website for those who wished to hear it. Regretably the the segment is too big.( 9minutes 29secs.)  However, for the next two weeks, I will email anyone a copy! FREE !!! All they have to do is simply email me and I will sent them an mp3  file, a.s.a.p. The Captain Gus DVD idea sounds great and if I can help in any way. please let me know. My wife undergoes surgery this Friday afternoon for exploratory reasons (possible cancer). Please keep her in your prayers." ---Ray, you da' man! Thanks so much for listening to the interview and recording it. That blows me away. Thanks for offering your services on the Captain Gus DVD. I'll keep you posted on the project. Please be assured that your wife is in our prayers and we all hope for the best of news on her health. Thank you, my friend! (8/2/05)

JULY 2005

WOAI-TV & RADIO, FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2005 (Taken directly word for word from their website posting.)

"All you bullies beware! One San Antonio school has a new high-tech system set to watch students' every move.
From the staircases to the halls and along just about every wall at John Jay High School, someone will be keeping a close on eye on everything going on. The school is installing about 70 high-tech surveillance cameras this school year. "We don't want drugs on our campus," said NISD's Director of Communications Pascaul Gonzalez. "We don't want fights. We don't want weapons. We don't want assaults." Here's how it works. From a computer in any office, administrators and school police can click on a camera and zoom in on images 24 hours a day. This is the first time schools in south Texas are using high-tech video surveillance. Administrators say security cameras should be in nine other buildings by February." ---WOW! Remember how we all used to think the original design of the school buildings made it look like a windowless prison? It's a shame that educational institutions have to resort to things like this to keep students and faculty safe. I don't blame John Jay or Northside ISD. I blame the DEADBEAT PARENTS for giving up their responsibilties to raise their children properly!! It is NOT the duty of schools to raise children! Ok, I'm off my soapbox. (7/29/05)

SUSAN POSTON ('72)
Coffeyville, Texas is delighted that I was in contact with her after I got her email address from her brother, Jerry. She writes... "Dennis, Thanks for sending me your website.  I haven't had time to read a lot of it, but it will be nice to use it as a way to catch up on what some of our classmates have been doing. Perhaps some of my classmates will remember the guy who took me to my senior prom - He is the guy I married, and we are celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary this summer. We never had children, but have enjoyed lots of friends' and families' kids.  We are both retired, and live in Colleyville, Texas, which is about half way between Dallas and Fort Worth.   We have enjoyed taking trips with my brother, Jerry Poston and his wife, Brenda, over the years.  Their daughter is getting married next year, so they are hoping for grandchildren real soon. Thanks again for sending me your website." ---Sue, it's great to hear from you after all these years! Your husband may have taken you to the senior prom, but do you remember who took you to the homecoming dance and bought you 4 mums back in 1970? ME!! Oh, those were the days! LOL Glad to hear you're doing great!! See ya at the next reunion. (7/24/05)

JERRY POSTON ('71) & BRENDA (MADDOX) POSTON ('71)
in Clifton, Texas have found us by email! It is FANTASTIC to hear from them! Actually, Mickey Mahler told them about the website! Jerry writes... "Hello Dennis, I thought I would send an email and let you know our email addresses. Mick Mahler called me last week about the reunion, however I had plans that I couldn't change at the last minute. I would have loved to come see everyone. It has been a long time. Brenda Maddox and I have been married for 33 years and live on a ranch near Clifton, Texas. (About 10 miles from President Bush, so we are either very safe or in deep trouble). Anyway thanks for all the work you continue to do on these type things. My sister, SUSAN POSTON ('72) email address is: susan.morgan4@comcast.net" ---Jerry, it is great to hear from you. You have been one of the "mystery men" of our classes. People ask me what you've been up to and I don't have any information. Give me a call or email me, again and bring me up to date on you, Brenda, and Susan. Again, it's so great to hear from you! (7/23/05) MORE FROM JERRY on 7/26/05... Jerry just called me and we spent almost an hour bringing each other up-to-date on each other's lives. We laughed up a storm! Jerry has pretty much retired after having worked with IBM for a number of years and then being president of his own computer technology business. He and Brenda live on a ranch with a bunch of horses and cattle and he loves it. He is a good friend of President George Bush, having gotten to know him as a neighbor, Texas governor and through the president's Texas Ranger days. He has even spoken to him as President! Get a load of that. I told Jerry that the next time George is at his ranch to get him to come to San Antonio with him and I'll treat the three of use to tacos and fajitas at Taco Cabana! LOL Would that be crazy or what!! Jerry has been with classmate Rick Mahler ('71) the week that he died back in March of this year. You could hear the sadness in both our voices when we talked about Rick. Jerry asked about several classmates and basketball teammates. He was not aware that Chuck Everingham ('70) had passed way about 7 or 8 years ago in Colorado. I also told him that teammate, Don Pippin ('70) was also in Colorado, the last that I had heard. He asked about John Taylor ('70) who is a very successful lawyer here in San Antonio and about his old basketball Coach John Casanova, who had a leg amputated due to complications of a fall and diabetes. Jerry is going to write me a paragraph or so and bring me totally up-to-date with more information that I can share with everyone. He just wants me to make sure that I tell everyone "HI" for him and that he promises not to miss the next reunion, whenever that might be! I look forward to Jerry's next email. (7/26/05)

RICK SANDOVAL ('71)  in Qatar, Iraq recently went back for his second tour of duty. He writes... "Howdy all.Just a quick note to let you all know that I am now doing security work here in Qatar. Not too bad except for the humidity. Easy money and no mortars. LOL. My email is still the same and hope to hear from you all. Bye for now." ---Rick, keep your head low and look both ways, dude! You're in our prayers. (7/20/05)

On his first tour of duty in Iraq,  RICK and, GEORGE HUNTER ('70) linked up in Baghdad and enjoyed their visit talking about the good old days at school. They were teammates on the Mighty Mustangs football team. Rick just shipped back for a second tour of duty this past June and George has been in the Middle East for a number of years.

GEORGE HUNTER ('70) somewhere deep in Iraq cannot be here for the reunion, but he sends his regards in this email... "Dear Dennis, Just one last note for you and your fantastic plans which I know will go great because you are "you", and you have the ability to orchestrate something like this event time after time. You are ageless in making those things happen. Please, say "hello" to all for me. I am so sad and sorry that I must see to other things in the world and help to ensure our American way of life is upheld, and encourage in our courageous younger generation to take up that challenge and continue the mission long after we settle into our golden years. Life that we enjoy today is also because of our fighting young men and women over here and temendous credit is to be given to "our"  great guides and leaders before all of us, who have been in the trenches of war. It is not an easy task, but it is one which I and many others have undertaken. Great job, Dennis!!! Hats off to you, my forever friend. All... Have a Happy 35th John Jay Reunion!!! (7/14/05)

BETTY CONSANI ('70) in San Francisco sent me an email the day after the reunion. I had sent out an email to veryone saying that if I was still alive and kicking in 2010, we;ll do another reunion, So, Betty writes... "Dear Dennis, You will be alive and kicking in 2010...and guess what?  I will NOW plan for the reunion and be there !!  Hehehe--its on my calendar in PEN! Sounds like the reunion was a fun occasion and I'm glad that you had a great time. Sorry I missed this one! We too have been having a great time - We have a 13 year old granddaughter (amazing since I am only 29) and have been so busy with her this weekend.  We are going to the Great America amusement park this morning.  This after getting home after 12:30  p.m. last night. Our granddaughter (Angel) likes to go crabbing.  So we take her to the Fort Baker pier, which is under the Golden Gate Bridge and we toss our nets into the water and we crab.  We only got three "keepers" last night.  We cannot keep dungeness crabs, which are my favorite because they are endangered inside of the San Francisco Bay but we kept three red crabs. I cannot describe how gorgeous it is under the Golden Gate bridge especially during the summer when the fog is rolling in and the fog horns blaring away and out of the fog comes a huge tanker ship or cruise ship. Anyhow, we crabbed til a bit after 10, packed up and then stopped at an all nite diner for a bite of something warm!  We live about 35 minutes south of San Francisco and we love it." ---Betty, thanks for already saying you're coming to the next reunion! Hope I can pull it off. It would be great to see you. (7/17/05)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to
RINGO STARR (65) and
UNCLE DENNIS (53) on
THURSDAY, JULY 7.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!
OB LA DI, OB LA DA
LIFE GOES ON!

ROBERTA DUNAGAN ('72) San Antonio, Texas (?) sent me an email and photo... "Dear Dennis, you are always tracking John Jay High School graduates who run into each other in far off places. Well, here is a good one.  Beleive it or not, my kid brother, MICHAEL DUNAGAN ('75), ran into another Jay graduate, DENNIS MIRANDA ('77), in the mess hall in FOB Kalsu, Iraq." ---Roberta, thanks for that cool information and the photo of your brother. It's nice to know that MIGHTY MUSTANGS are doing OK and find one another in such remote places.

Mike was able to attend the class reunion and he's looking a bit skinny but doing well after surgery for pancreatic cancer.

He also made a BIG donation for the website when he came to the reunion. Mike, you hang in there and stay our of harm's way. We need ya around for the next reunion! (7/14/05)

Michael Dunagan ('75) at the left and Dennis Miranda ('77).

BARBARA MILLER ('72) in Austin, Texas has mailed in some remarkable stuff for the reunion! She sent me about 20 spirit ribbons from football games in the early years at Jay! She also sent a campaign letter from MIKE PROCTOR ('71) when he was running for students council and a handwritten endorsement letter for RANDY OLSEN ('71) when he ran for office. The letter says only Randy can stand up to the school "administration heads" so, vote for him!! There's a photo of PAUL CRUMP ('71 Deceased), LINDA SCHNEIDER ('71), Barbara and other cast members in a school paly! Wait till ya' see this stuff at the reunion. Barb, thanks so very much for the items!! (7/14/05)

PHYLLIS EDWARDS ('74)
has sent me the most unusual email that I have recieved in the last few years. Let me share it with everyone (with her permission) and see if anyone knows anything about this... "Dear Dennis, my name is Phyllis Edwards Soffes "Class of '74." I married Ken Soffes "Class of '70." I went to John Jay with your younger brother Robert (Bobby) The reason I am writing you is to see if you could help me I was told by Barbara Robbins "Class of '74" that she went to the reunion two years ago and saw a plaque stating that I was deceased. I was shocked. I am very much alive and in very good health. Ken & I will be married 30 years this January and have two children. Is there any truth to this rumor? I was just wondering because I'm not sure where this information came from. Sorry, we won't be able to make the reunion this year due to work commitments, but give my best to all at the reunion."  --- Phyllis, great to hear that you're well and alive! Sorry, but this is the first time I've heard of anything like this. I don't know if such a plaque exists or where it would be if it does. Let me ask everyone who attended any John Jay reunion two years, if they are aware of this. If so, just click on Phyllis's name at the beginning of this item and send her an email. Phyllis, if you get any replies, please let me know. Whew! What a mystery. Please give my best to Ken and hope we can all meet up sometime soon. (7/7/05)

TOMMY McDUFF ('70) in Inez, Texas has sent me some unsettling news by email... "Hey Dennis, I had planned to come to reunion. But I recently found out that I have a tumor in my colon. It is benign, but i will be having surgery on Monday, July 11th to have the tumor removed. Please tell everybody that I said "Hi" and I would have liked to be there." ---Tom, so sorry to hear this news from you, but at least, it seems there is a bright side to this news (if there can be). Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. If there is anything that we can do, please let us know. You hang in there and our prayers and best wishes are with you, my friend. Get well soon and we hope that your recovery is swift and complete. (7/7/05)

PAULA EDGIN ('70) in Smithfield, Virginia is not able to make the reunion, but she did send me an email... "Dear Dennis, What a joy it is to be remembered with your "special" invitation!! I work across the James River in Newport News. I am about 45 minutes from Virginia Beach. It is absolutely beautiful here with all the water! I never thought I would learn to love it so. I would love to join you all; however, I am currently working on my advanced degree in educational leadership and administration at George Washington University and completing my administrative internship during the summer. Additionally, I am the new Dean of Students at my middle school, and I am working this summer in preparation for the start of school in August.  Trips this summer for the most part are out, except for one week in August. My son and sisters are in Atlanta where he grew up. My heart is still there. An interesting sidebar: Last year we hired a new, young teacher from San Antonio (her parents live here). Guess where she taught? Holmes High School! It is like having a piece of home here!! Dennis, I hope you all have a fantastic reunion! I will miss seeing everyone. You are an amazing man! I appreciate you thinking of me more than you will ever know! Please give my very best wishes to the Mustang family- I will be thinking of you!" ---Paula, we all will miss you very much, but I see you have a very busy schedule and I understand. It was wonderful being able to track you down last year and I hope we get to see one another one of these days! By the way, our classmate CARL JENSEN ('70) lives in Newport News. You two need to get in touch for lunch! (7/5/05)

DOUG WHITE ('72) in Maui, Hawaii has cleared up a 35 year mystery for me! He is NOT the brother of DONNA WHITE ('72) and, for all these years, I thought they were related! Hell, they even look alike to me! LOL Doug called me from Hawaii, today, just to touch base. He wants to extend his appreciation to eveyone who has emailed him to thank him for his SUPER generosity in paying for the costs of the SHINDIG Friday night social in the school cafeteria. I tried to add my thanks, again, for doing so, and then he started thanking ME for doing these reunions over the past 20 years. So, we had a GREAT meeting of the Mutual Admiration Society! LOL Doug is VERY successful and works for the company that owns the Westin Resorts around the nation and the world. He is working on a new resort in Hawaii. He's so tied up with business that he probably can't make the reunion, but he wanted to do something for everyone. Doug has a heart of solid GOLD and I treasure our friendship. We had some great laughs on the phone from swapping stories. He's in touch with several classmates like CECIL YANCEY ('71), JEFF SPEAKS ('72), KEITH ROBINSON ('70), KURT ROBSINSON ('73) and others, and is trying to reach them to encourage them to contact me to come to the reunion. Doug--- THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your tremendous generosity and may God bless you and your family! (7/2/05)
