There are places I'll remember, all my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better. Some have gone and some remain.
All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends, I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living. In my life, I've loved them all.
In my life, I've loved you more.

ROBERT FRAZIER '72 Cairo, Egypt
contacted his credit union and had them issue a generous check as a donation for the web site. Bob loves working for a civilian contractor at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and even rides his HARLEY on those ancient streets! He pops into town every now and then and shows up at THE GUYS meetings. It's always great to see him. Bob, thanks for the donation and stay safe. See you again real soon, I hope! (6/10/06)

"THE CLASS OF 1976" and SHARNEL MORGAN ('76)
San Antonio, Texas, have sent in a donation for the website. They are planning an all-class 30-Year Reunion on September 15th and 16th. Just scroll back up this page to: 2006 Reunions and you'll see all the information. My thanks to Sharnel and all the members of the "Class of '76". (6/9/06)

MAY 2006
No donations this month.

APRIL 2006
NELDA CARTER ('73) San Antonio, Texas, sent in her donation--- Nelda, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your lovely card, kind words and generosity. I really do appreciate the help from wonderful people like YOU. It means so much to know my work on the website is appreciated and supported. Again, thanks so much for being the fantastic person that you are! It was a great surprise to hear from you. The flame keeps burning brightly. Take care! (4/21/06)

MIKE DUNAGAN ('75)
Kuwait, Middle East, sent in another donation for the web site, along with a few words... "Dennis, as much as I look at your site and as much as I get enjoyment out of it, I feel I should be paying the whole bill! I look at it at least every two or three days and I know you are limited on the number of visits you are authorized. And I would probably be hitting it everyday if it was not for those limits. I quess I feel really guilty on abusing it. I saw a coffee cup on Camp Victory, Baghdad at the Pizza Hut Trailer. It would have been perfect for you to take to your monthly Friday night GUYS meetings. It was an insulated coffee mug, kinda large size. It was bright red with the Pizza Hut logo and Iraq imprinted across the bottom. I could just imagine you sitting in Pizza Hut with the guys, drinking out of it and talking war stories. They were out of them, but I am going back before I leave Sunday (4/9/06) to get two of them, because I want one myself. Dennis, I just want to you to know that it is people with as big a heart and as outgoing a personality as you have that allow those of us who are actually shy to appreciate life and give us someone that we would like to emulate. Because I never liked being in the center of things is what made me a good scout for the Army, being out by myself without others around to see me, support me or know what I was doing made it an ideal profession for me. One of the best things that has happened in the last couple of years was discovering your website and actually meeting someone like you." --- Mike, FIRST, you're not abusing the visiting of my site at all. Since I made the switch to my own domain name, visits are UNLIMITED. So, if you want to visit my website EVERY DAY, hell, go ahead!!  Thanks for MUGGING me last month. I know you're serving with a civilian contrator in Kuwait, right now, and I appreciate you taking the time out from pouring the sand out of his shorts to stop by the STARBUCKS in Kuwait City to buy me a HUGE coffee mug from there! Hell, I could drain the 7 quarts of oil out of my 1980 Ford Bronco in this mug and still have enough room for a gallon or two more!! Mike, I know you're a recent cancer survivor and, yet, you still choose to serve our country in the Middle East. What a guy! Thanks so much for the mug and the check. You continue to amaze me with your stamina and patriotism. Thank for your friendship, keep your head down over there, and come back to the States in one piece! Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done for me and for all your fellow Mustangs! All the best to you, my friend! (4/9/06)

MARCH 2006
JERRY GILES ('70) Moscow, Idaho just MUGGED me with a great donation! I walk out onto my porch, this morning, and, 'lo and behold, there's a package sitting on the little desk I have out there. It's a package from Jerry. I open it up and there's a gorgeous coffee mug from the University of Idaho! Gold-trimmed no less!! Inside the mug was Jerry's FANTASTIC donation for the website and a note, which read... "Dennis, I hope you're getting better. Thought you would prefer this UI mug instead of a POTATO! " --- Jerry, thanks so much for the great coffee mug and for the outstanding donation check for this website! I sure do appreciate it and I hope I get to see you sometime soon, at least in July 2010 for the next SHINDIG! (3/16/06)

GLENN BURCHARD ('69)
Austin, Texas sent in a donation check and a nice letter. He has donated so much in the past, I told he that he's done his part and doesn't need to do that anymore. Well, he writes... "Dennis, I know you told me in the past not to donate anymore, but it's been a while, so I'm gonna' do it anyway. I've remained quiet while you've had all this reecent excitemeny the last few months. That doesn't mean I wasn't thinking about what's been going on. You're in my prayers everyday, buddy. I know you've had quite a scare and fear certainly can be a great motivator, but I do admire you for getting things under control and making the necessary changes. Keep up the momentum-- we've got reunions to plan. By the way, last November, my wife Melba and I went to see Paul McCartney in Houston and Dallas at back-to-back concerts. It was anawesome experience! As we left the concert in Dallas, there was a tribute band playing on a roof-top bar in freezing weather. I thought of you when the guy in the band with the "John Lennon" voice sang, "In My Life." Take care of yourself!" ---Glenn, it's always a wonderful time when I hear from you. Thanks for the kind words of encouragement about my health. I can't ebelieve that you saw McCartney twice in a row, like that!!! I saw him when he opened the AlamoDome. I saw Ringo the next year at the Sunken Gardens. Geez, I wish McCartney would come here , again. Bob Dylan is playing here in S.A. and the Municipal Auditorium, next month. I may try to see him. Thanks for the donation and the the letter. You're the best! (3/15/06)

FEBRUARY 2006
MICHAEL DUNAGAN ('75) in Kuwait, MUGGED me today AND made another donation to the website. Mike is serving with a civilian contrator in Kuwait, right now, and took time out from pouring the sand out of his shorts to stop by the STARBUCKS in Kuwait City to buy me a HUGE coffee mug from there! Hell, I could drain the 7 quarts of oil out of my 1980 Ford Bronco in this mug and still have enough room for a gallon or two more!! I opened the packaging around the mug and inside he had place a just a BIG check for the website! Good thing I looked iside bfore pouring me some hot cocoa in there! Mike is a recent cancer survivor and still chooses to serve our contry in the Middle East. What a guy! Mike, thanks so much for the mug and the check. You continue to amaze me with your stamina and patriotism. Thank for your friendship, keep your head down over there, and come back to the States in one piece! Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done for me and for all your fellow Mustangs! All the best to you, my friend! (2/21/06)

JERI BARGER ('71)
Sylacauga, Alabama, sent in the only donation this month, which is already hald over. I was worried but I knew someone would come through for us! Jeru and I have been swapping emails and then I get this darling St. Valentine's Day card from her along with a wonderful check. It never ceases to amaze me how close I have become to so many classmates whom I've never met! Jeri, thank you so very much for the sentiments of your card and the donation check. It comes at a very good time. The traffic on this website has tripled since the reunion and the only way to keep the flame burning is for incredible people like YOU to help me out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You are so sweet!! (2/16/06)

JANUARY 2006
TARYN HOUGH ('72) Norman, Oklahoma, sent me a GET WELL card with lovely sentiments, along with a wonderful donation to keep this alumni flame burning. I hear every so often from Taryn and she always tells me wonderful things and she's always to nice to me. She and her husband recently moved from Choctaw. I love that Native American name! I have only been to Oklahoma once. I made the trip over a Thanksgiving holiday with DONNA ADAMS ('72) about 12 years ago. Donna and I had gone steady back in high school and 25 years later, I hooked up with her, again, for a while, but that's a different story. LOL. Taryn, thank so much for thinking of me and thank you for the generous donation. You are so beautiful!  (1/27/06)

CHARLOTTE GLISSON ('70)
Floresville, Texas and her sister MELANIE GLISSON ('74) in Pipe Creek, Texas paid me a surprise visit on Tuesday night 1/24/06! I hadn't seen Charlotte in about four years although we have stayed in touch by phone. I had not seen Melanie since she was a freshman my senior year at Jay! Charlotte is an occupational therapist working all over South Texas. Melanie works in the cash room for J.C. Penney, here in S.A. (In her spare time, I think she washes people's backs!) [Inside joke!] Charlotte decided to take the day off and come to S.A. and visit with her sister. She had not heard that I had been sick and Melanie told her. When she heard that, Charlotte said she just HAD to come visit me. The three of us sat in my living room and laughed and howled for over two hours! We told stories and I gotta' tell you folks, it was one of the best nights I have had since getting out of the hospital. God, I love laughing with these two beautiful ladies. They are great medicine for me. Well, to make a long story short (I know that's impossible at this point), as I walked them outside, when they had to leave, I gave Charlotte a BIG hug and she whispered in my ear that she had left a donation check on the table next to my easy chair. I told her she didn't have to do that, but that's the way Charlotte is-- so shy and quiet. When I got in the house and found the check I nearly had another case of heart failure!! Her generosity is unbelieveable! Sweet Charlotte, thanks so much for the donation. It's wonderful, caring people just like YOU that make it all worth while. Melanie, since you lived here in S.A. and not in the boonies like your sister, you have no excuse for not visiting me more often and making me laugh! See the two of you very soon! Love ya' both bunches! (1/25/06)

JANINE RODRIGUEZ ('71)
North Richland Hiils, Texas, sent me a GET WELL card, along with a letter and a check for this website. Her letter was hilarious@ She writes..."Dear Dennis, I hope this card finds you feeling much better and on the road to recovery. I wanted you to know you've been in my thoughts and prayers. I enjoy reading your emails and especially all the time you devote to our reunions. YOU make them special. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart.... I'm in the medical field, so let me tell you a story. I used to take X-rays and one time I had this young man, about 20 years old, come into X-ray from the emergency room. As he came in the room, I thought he was there for an X-ray of his spine, so, I asked him to take off all his clothes and put on a gown. He got this "deer in the headlights" look on his face and yelled, 'It's only my hand!!!' Of course, my being a John Jay graduate, the clothes STILL had to come off! Love, Janine" --- LOL That is hilarious! What is even more funny is that I BELIEVE YOU!!! Thank you so very much for the thouhths, prayers, card and donation. I had no Idea that you were in North Richland Hills!  That's where DEAN & SANDY (WOODS) DUNN ('69/70) also live. Do you ever see them? Again, thanks so much. My love to you, too!  (1/25/06)

RENITA FOSTER ('71)
Fort Monmouth, New Jersey mailed me the cutest "Get Well" card, letter, and donation for the website. Renita is a colonel in the U.S. Army and works in the Public Affairs/Relations division. She's an accomplished writer and has numerous articles published in military publications. She has traveled the world over writing feature stories on special U.S. Army people- active and retired- and their careers. For about the past two years, she has also served on the Casualty Team at Ft. Monmouth, whose unfortunate duty is to inform families of the death of their soldier in the Middle East. She tells me how heart-wrenching such duty is, but she is so proud to serve the grieving families and to represent our country's military in their time of sorrow. She tells me that she may be shipping out to Iraq in the coming months. Believe it or not, she looks forward to that experience. She will be assigned to a "bomb squad" to write about their vital work in this dangerous theatre of war. Renita's retirement is just around the corner and she hopes to return to Texas. Her son has just been accepted as a junior at Texas A&M University for this Spring. ---Renita, I can't wait to see ya' when ya come back to Texas. Thanks for the card, letter and donation to the website. My love is always with ya! (1/11/06)

DEAN and SANDY (WOODS) DUNN ('69/'70)
North Richland Hills, Texas, sent in a donation for the website along with a wonderful card. Dean and Sandy are absolutely wonderful to me and have supported the reunion efforts for the past 25 years. Thank you for your donation and your very kind words! (1/9/06)

DOUG CRAWFORD ('71)
Bulverde, Texas, sent me an email around Christmas time and promised to send in a donation. I got his card and check on January 6, as promised. He writes, "Thanks for keeping up with so many of our old friends. You are a prince. Now, lose some weight and take care of yourself. Hook 'Em Horns!!"  ---Thanks for the words of encouragement and the donation, Doug-ster. You're the best! (1/6/06)

NELDA CARTER ('73)
San Antonio, Texas sent in a lovely "Get Well" card and a website donation. She sent me wishes that I'll continue to feel better every day. Thank you for your caring words and for the donation to keep the flame buring in 2006. Your generosity mean so much. (1/3/06)

JORGE and MINDY (FROSTO) SWANK ('81/'81)
San Antonio, Texas sent in a donation for the website along with a "Get Well" card for me. During the holiday they got to visit their siblings- David Frosto (77), Teri Frosto ('78), and Becky Swank ('85). This year will mark their 25-Year Class Reunion and they are starting work on it, My thanks for the card and the donation to the website. I appreciate your kind words and thinking of me. (1/3/06)

CURRENT MUSTANG NEWS

JUNE 2006

COACH RON LUNA HAS PASSED AWAY
Early this morning , I received a phone call from Shirley Luna, the wife of one of our former original John Jay High School coaches, Ron Luna. Coach died yesterday, Wednesday, June 7th of cardiac arrest. Many of us are so lucky to have spoken with Coach the last time he was in the hospital. He told me of the many former students from around the U.S. that called him, including one of his favorite former John Jay HS student athletes and Major League Baseball star Mickey Mahler ('70) and many others. I could tell it was good medicine for him to hear from so many Mustangs.

Shirley said she would send me an e-mail with information, which she did, and it is posted below. Other information on Coach is available is in the obituary column of San Antonio Express-News at: http://obits.mysanantonio.com/story.cfm?type=0&id=54256  .

The Luna's home address is: 8226 Hohen Street, San Antonio, Texas 78221-2739, Phone (210) 923-8230. To e-mail a message to Shirley and the family, click here: COACH LUNA

On behalf of the entire JJHS Mustang Alumni, I extend our most sincere and heatfelt love and prayers to Shirley Luna and the Luna family in their time of sorrow and loss. May the Good Lord rest his soul.  ---Dennis DuPriest 1970

Here is Shirley's email....
Dear Dennis and  Mustang Family, It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my husband, Ronnie Luna, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006.  He fought a long and valiant battle with Diabetes, Heart Failure and Kidney Failure.  He won all of the battles except the last one. Ronnie loved being a teacher and coach. He continued to care about all of you and and your lives. He treasured each visit, phone call, card, letter and e mail he received from all of you.  And so did I.

The celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2006, at 11:00 am at Mission Park Funeral Chapel South in San Antonio, TX.  The address is 1700  S. E. Military Dr.  Visitation is Friday, June 9,  from 5-7 pm. My love and best wishes to all of you. ----Shirley Luna

THOUGHTS ON COACH LUNA...
MARK ROBBINS
('71) Location unknown,  Dennis, It is with a heavy heart that I receive this information concerning Coach Luna.  I'm thankful to you for keeping us all informed.  I played Junior Varisity football in 1968 under Coach Luna. What always struck me most was not merely his dedication in working with us as players to develop our athletic our skills on the field, but more impotantly, molding us as young men in preparation for life off the field. He was a shinning example of the of the morals, standards, and caring from which having experienced by being around him, we all walked away winners. I will never forget after suffering a broken neck in a trampoline accident in PE class in 1969, Coach Luna was one of the first to visit me at the hospital. He stood over me quetly, touched my hand and said, "Son, everything is going to be just fine. After all, we need you back on the field, so you get well soon, O.K?" We all try to be positive for those in such condition, but what set Coach Luna apart from most that day, was as he spoke those words, he did so with a tear in his eye.  You see, this was the true essence of the kind of person he was; a fine man who truly cared for people; an unwaivering friend, a special heart. Coach Luna is with the angels now, and if I were to guess, I'd say he's coaching the "A Team".  I consider myself very fortunate to have played a small role in his life and I am a better man for it.  I will always know that as he now sits at the hand of God, he is still watches over us, he still inspires us. My prayers are with his family; may God bless them.
MARK LOISELLE '70, Wisconsin: Dennis, thanks for the update on Coach Luna. I never had him as a coach, but I remember him as a friendly man, smiled a lot.

WARREN WHITAKER '70, Texas:
Wow, I played football for Coach Luna in 9th grade at Sul Ross.  He was really good with young men growing up.  I have only fond thoughts of him, as he always treated me with dignity and respect.  He really had a positive influence on me.  I am saddened to hear the news but he is at peace now and I know the Lord has let him into his kingdom.

BETTY CONSANI '70, California: My condolences to the Luna Family and his extended Mustang family.

RAMIRO ROCHA '73, Nebraska:
I remember him as the greatest coach I had in Track & Field.  My prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

RAY WHITWORTH '73, Texas:
What a great  guy and he had such an impact on so many.He made a difference. One cherished memory was after a P.E. class, we showered and waited at the door from the locker room to the Jay atrium. It was so noisy, I did my best "Coach Luna" voice and shouted "AWWWW RIGHT YOU PEOPLE!" Immediately  the guys voices fell silent, then, they realized it was me and laughed. Then I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Coach Luna! Oh man, am I in trouble! He solemnly looked at me and said "Whitworth, next time I need a day off, I'll be sure to give you a call, so no one will notice I'm gone." Coach Luna was not just a coach, he was a person whose heart extended beyond that. Thanks for the memories, Coach.

ROBERT FRAZIER '72 Cairo, Egypt: My condolences to the Luna family. Coach Luna was a great guy and he will be dearly miss by all JJHS Mustangs and others who knew him.

PATTY BOOKER '73 Texas:
I'm so very sorry about his death and I wish his family all my love and prayers for this time. I remember the gym was divided way back when by a BIG curtain and I use to sneak over to the boy's side and lift weights with them. Boy, did I get in trouble.......at least once a week. We will miss him and all he stood for.

GEORGE HUNTER '70 Baghdad, Iraq:
We have suffered a great loss and a great man in our lives of sports and friendship. I was so disappointed to hear this news, but what makes me more sad is that I was there in S.A. in April and was so busy with all the other issues in my own life that I failed to pursue and link up with my Coach. For this, I feel more deeply struck down by my selfishness and am so regretably sorry. The ironic thing about this is the fact that we as veterans of service to our Nation already know that we should always seek to say hello, drop a line, make that phone call... to those whom we care about, wherever they are and whatever they do. I dropped this ball while there in S.A., I have to live with that. I had metioned that I will be calling Coach when I return to SA to Dennis, well Dennis, you were down and off your feet, but I forgot to call my coach whom did double hat duty with me in track and football. My deep respects go to this mountain of a man.God Bless Coach Luna and his family.

KARL RITTER ('71) Wiesbaden, Germany >>>
"Dennis, I have been out of the corral for a while. As you know things change as time goes by. My e-mail address was one of them. My new address is  karlwritter@yahoo.com. That is my American address, but it works overseas, as well. Please change it for me in the class e-mail links. I am still based out of Fredericksburg, Texas, however I spend about half or more of my time overseas mainly wondering around Europe. It is a lot cooler here.

I am not married anymore, again, therefore, I have no concern about being too late or in other instances too early getting home. I don't know of all the details but I am of the understanding that you had a bout with illness. I heard you are doing much better now. I receive my health care here in Germany. In my opinion it is the worlds best. I am still alive at least.

I am planning a trip back over soon. I would like to invite you and yours to come and visit Fredericksburg. I would like to see some of my old friends again. What an idea it would be to have an informal gathering there. I will provide the conference center. Probably get reduced hotel rates. Come on Dennis, what do you think? It is a huge complex at the Hangar Hotel. Look it up on the web. It's cool (air conditioned ) really.

Let me know. I will be glad to hear from you." (6/4/06)

               KARL RITTER in Berlin Germany.
Karl, what a friggin] surprise to hear from you and what a great picture! That's the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, right? You disappeared off the face of the earth a few years back. A get together in Frederickburg, Texas would be fun, but when do you want to do this? It's awfully short notice. I don't know if I could pull something off that quick. We can consider it, anyway. I'm an old man with a tired memory these days! LOL Bring us all up to date on your life and send me an e-mail, as soon as you can. Stay in touch!! ---Dennis
MAY 2006

KATHY LUND ('72) San Antonio, Texas, sent me this photo, today. It's a picture of her and URBAN URBANO ('70). She and Urban were jammin' in Comfort, Texas back on May 6th. Urban is still playing drums for various San Antonio groups and gigs all over the world, for that matter. He and I seem to touch base maybe once a year by phone. He's still as crazy as ever.

Kathy is doing great. She is a Training Coordinator at CareMark, Inc. at Alamo Downs Business Park, where my brother, Tom, also works. Anyway, enjoy Kathy's and Urban's happy faces! All the best to both of them. (5/30/06)

CHARLES KOSTMAYER ('70)
Mobile, Alabama writes... "Hello Dennis, A few months ago, someone stole my identity.  They hacked into my email, and accessed my ebay and paypal.  I noticed some unusual activity and shut down my credit card ect.  Now it has come to my attention that the clever person has been sending tons of email in  my name, from my email address, trying to con people.  If you recieve such an email, it is not me.  I will never ask you for money or try to scam anyone. Our hurricane repairs, are well under way, but still a lot to do at the river.  The family is well. Hang in there Dennis, as one who has lost over 50 lbs.  It has little to do with exercise, and mostly to do with determination. Don't give up!  Once you've lost some weight you'll like some exercise." ---Chuck, good to hear that you're doing well and that hurricane repairs are getting done. Hope you don't suffer any more trouble with the stolen I.D. Hang in there! (5/28/06)

DOUG CRAWFORD ('70) San Antonio, Texas, saw me on the TV news and writes... "Dennis, I must have stepped across a threshold into the Twilight Zone (can you hear the music?).  I actually saw you on the TV as the "voice of reason".  Please tell me it ain't so!!?!?!? Denni,s you have surely matured in the last few years.  Of course, I reminded myself that it isn't too hard to sound reasonable in today's environment.  You looked good and sounded very intelligent and calm.  I was proud of you. Now, if half the nutcases only listened you will have succeeded.  From all appearances you are doing well and look like you have recovered. Hang in there and don't let the stress or the crazies get to you." ---LOL, thanks for the note, Doug.
YES, THAT WAS ME ON TV this past week. We had a student at Somerset Junior High come down with TB (Tuberculosis) this past week, Actually, she's had it for about fours weeks and has been in the hospital. When the health authorities diagnosed her, it was my job as district public information officer to release the information and work with the media and the parents of 3,500 students in our district to get the word out and work with the health district. Very low chance that the girl infected anyone, as they don't believe that she was contagious at that time. So, I was on TV and Radio news reports several times this past week. Anyway, that's just one of the things that I've had to deal with recently. A very unique situation to be involved with, to say the least. Thanks for writing! (5/28/06)

RENITA FOSTER ('71) Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, has finished her Army career and writes... "Dear Dennis, So glad, as always, to hear from you. sorry to hear about all the "bad stuff." Believe me you are not alone. I retired from the Army about five weeks ago, and now it’s time to start making plans toget back to Texas! Please know my thoughts are with you and your e-mails really are a highlight for me! Cheers, Renita." ---Sweetie, it's always good to hear from you and your sisters. Thanks for serving our country these many years in the Amry. I loved reading your news articles and look foward to seeing you real soon. I'll be sure to save a table at Jim's Coffe Shop at Marbach & 410 for us! Love ya! (5/28/06)

MARK NORMAN ('71)
Louisville, Kentucky writes... "Dennis, Good golly man, I didn't get the word! I'm sorry for having my head so far up in the clouds that I didn't know (about your illness). Not being in Texas, I sometimes lose track of things. Dennis, don't ever get so down that you don't pick up the phone. Call collect if you want to. Just call and tell me about your crabgrass. We get one shot at this, so let's grab it. You are my friend. Okay, you've got my attention and my prayers. Tomorrow, my wife daughter and I head out for the Indy 500. I've already sent you a cup from there. A week from now we head to a top secret location. We will be gone for over two weeks. Why is it top secret you ask? Because five months ago while I was laying out plans, I was planning on bringing something back for some guy in Texas I consider a good friend. Friend or not, I want to keep him in suspense. You'll get whatever from wherever by Independence Day. Meanwhile, take care of yourself and walk as much as you can." ---Mark, thanks for your concern. Hearing from friends like you is the best medicine that I can have. I'm hanging in there. Nothing desperate. Just dealing with the situations of life. By the way, I am watching the Indianapolis 500, at this very moment, as I write this, and am updating this website. I think I just saw you on TV! Really, a familiar face in the 100,000 on the TV screen!1 LOL Take care! (5/28/06)

CATHIE BOOTH ('71) Louisiana writes to me... "
Hey, Dennis, I know the feeling of trying to recoup from illness.  I started last June '05 with Hepatitus-A food poisoning and it went into major jaundice, Then, they diagnosed me with Auto Immune Hepititus. I'm not contagious, only immune system confused.  By November '05, I was better, but by February '06, slight jaundice in eyes.  Long story short, I improved by being on an alkaline diet which surprised the MD in saying well that's 30 yrs of med study down the tubes. LOL  I am losing weight not going hungry.  From 247 to 225.  I have a bit more energy and am back to doing what my passion is. < style="font-style: italic;">On another note, our daughter, AIC Amber Aucoin St. Laurent, is now in Bagdad. Her 2nd time to the area ( Kuwait was the first tour.).  She is doing okay as of right now.  < style="font-style: italic;">My prayer for you as you heal to the highest good for yourself.  Even the smallest of positive changes are the miracles. Love to you with many blessings." ---Cathie, glad to hear you're doing better please let you daughter know that she's in our prayers for a safe tour of duty and a safe journey home. Love is all around. (5/28/06)

BETTY CONSANI ('70) California writes... “Dennis, It was good hearing from you once again.  I am glad to hear that you are getting better.  As for the weight loss, I understand completely.  My hubby is over 300 lbs and is on the list for the by-pass surgery.  He is delaying the surgery until after my son's wedding in September...only because the first available date was for the month of September and the wedding has been planned for ages !!! My son will be married on September 30th, 2006 at the Ritz Carleton in Half Moon Bay, Ca. This will be my third child to be married. I only have one child left to get married after the wedding in September.  She and her boyfriend bought a house together a couple of years ago and recently have been looking at engagement rings.  She's 32 so she hears that biological clock ticking.

My youngest child gave birth Tuesday to a little girl.  It is her second child.  Madylin Michelle Harrell was born a couple weeks early and has a little stay in the hospital ahead of her but she's doing very well.” (5/28/06)

ARTHUR "ART" REYNA ('74) Leon Valley, Texas just got elected to the City Council of Leon Valley with 71% of the vote in the May 13th, 2006, general election. Way to go, Art. (5/28/06)

DONNA CHOLLMAN ('77) Tai Tam, Hong Kong, China... "Wow! An e-mail from China!!... "Hi, Dennis. I wanted to send you my new e-mail address. You ask us to send in some information on what we're doing so... We, (my husband and two boys) have been living in Hong Kong for the past two and-a-half years and LOVE IT!  I don't see us coming back any time soon. My husband works for an international software company and runs the Asia Pacific marketplace for the Mobile and Device Group.  It's been quite an exciting adventure for us...we have certainly taken advantage of being in the APAC region.  We travel to exotic places about once or twice a month to experience different cultures and sights.  I truly believe that every American should live abroad for a year or two; it gives you a whole new perspective on our country and what being an American is all about and the perception abroad.  We live in a very international community. One of my children goes to a German Swiss International School and the second to a Chinese English School.  One has a English/Aussie accent and the other a bit of a Chinese twist.  They have opportunities to celebrate different customs/foods from all over the world on a daily basis.  They have grown up in a very SAFE environment here and can run around and just be kids.  It's very empowering for them.  Kids (usually starting about 7) can ride public transportation very easily to get themselves to play dates and or activities.  They can use the men's room without worry, they get to be kids!  I love the international exposure. A good 90% of the kids are going abroad for the summer, so we are heading off to New Zealand and then back to the US for a months visit before we start on the school year once again.  It will be nice to visit my home and see a yard again instead of a high rise!  I'm looking forward to traveling the US a bit while I'm back and taking it all in! I'll be in the U.S. in two weeks, I'll send something out to you when I get there. Thanks for doing this website." ---Donna, it sounds like you're having a blast, over there. Thanks for the update. Keep you eyes peeled for some Chinese BEATLES stuff and a coffee mug from there! All the best! (5/28/06)

PATTY BOOKER ('73) San Antonio, Texas “Dear Dennis-I hope you are doing well since I haven't seen anything new on your website. If not, then, my thoughts and prayers are with you. It's been a very long while since I've been in touch with a lot of people. I moved back to S.A. in 1988, after my husband, Gabe Garcia [('71) grad from Edison], died from a car accident in Twentynine Palms,Ca. My son, Gabe graduated from Taft in '93 and has been in the Marine Corps for 13 years. He is currently in Iraq. This makes the third time being over there, but this time he volunteered and will stay longer when his time is up! My daughter Shelley,(named after JJHS classmate and dear friend, Shelley Urbach, who I would love to get in contact with) is a '94 grad from Taft. She was in drama at Taft and attended DePaul University in Chicago where she lives with her husband Alec and my beautiful 17 month old granddaughter Arwyn. I read ALL the classmate news and was very surprised to find out that Carl Utterback is a Dr. and a pilot. I still remember him trying to pick up girls at the skating rink on base. I wish I would have known about the reunion but I JUST got a computer. By the way, Danny Beavers is also a pilot and owns his own plane. It's amazing how people change when they grow up. Look at all of us now! I will try to send a donation ASAP. I'm trying to pay off some medical bills from breast cancer. I'm fine now but tired from all the surgeries. It was so good seeing names I remember from your website like: Cindy Urbach, Cary & Gary Maestas (they lived around the corner from me) and Urban & Jay Urbano. I also had Nelda Carter in one of my accelerated math classes. I have been trying to get in touch with Mike Robinson ('73) and both e-mail addresses were wrong. We went to school together all the way back to Mary Hull and he was my best guy friend. Also if anyone knows how to get in touch with Dana Wilson ('73)-I would appreciate it. I can be reached at pattyg2@netzero.net. By the way that's not my Harley but I still love bikes! By the way, my brother Brian ('75) and his wife, Donna live in S.A. He owns ExploreUSA and sells RV's. Take CARE of yourself.”

It's great to hear from you Patty and you look awesome on the bike! Please know how much we all appreciate the work your son and other children of classmates are doing by serving in the armed forces. Our prayers and best wishes fo to all of them! (5/28/06)

Here I am on a Harley and that's a photo
of my son, Gabe, serving in Iraq, right now.

IDA YATES ('72) San Antonio, Texas, doesn't write to me often, but when she does, it's great! "Dennis, I was so glad to get your e-mail letting everyone no that you're okay. As far as your weight gain, you can do it! If I can put down cigarettes after smoking since I was 13 you can work on the weight. So, believe me, we stand behind one another in dealing with life's curve balls. Stay well and keep us up to date on everything ok? Love from an old school chum."

---Ida, thanks for the encouragement and taking the time to write. You look absolutely fantastic. Geez, I've seen you in 35+ years, but you're still gorgeous! It's always great to hear from wonderful people like YOU and I really do appreciate the words of encouragement and advice. I've got to admit it's getting harder and harder for me to stick to the diet or any exercise plan. What's that old saying-- "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." ? I'm a prime example of it. I know if I don't turn things around, I'm headed for the same, if not worse, circumstances. I am trying, though. Again, thanks for writing! (5/28/06)

TERRY YATES (77) San Antonio, Texas, joins his sister in writing to me on the same day! "
Dennis hope you're feeling better. I have to pass along something that happened last week. It was the week of my grandson's Senior Prom and my daughter was trying to find a limo in the Austin area to take him and some of his friends to the prom. All of the limo's in Austin were booked. so, she called a service in San Antonio. Bingo! She got one. On the evening of the prom, we were at my daughter's house to take pictures. When the limo arrived and the driver got out, I thought he looked familiar. I said,  "You'er one of the boys arent you?" He said, "Yeah, I'm Ron." I asked him if he remembered me. He looked, but no luck. When I finally told him who I was his words were "I dont believe you are still alive!" MaestasRonnie, Mike Edwards and I were like the Three Amigos in high school and college. Needless to say we had a lot of catching up to do.We exchanged phone numbers and he gave me Mike Edwards phone number.  Oh, by the way, the last time I saw Ronnie was in 1970. And they say the memory is the first thing to go. NOT!  Anyway, you get back on the fast track to recovery. Every day you wait is a day you cant get back and at our age we dont have any to waste." ---Terry, what a great story! If you can get me the e-mail addresses for Cary, Gary and Ronnie, I'd appreciate it! All the best to you!" (/5/28/06)

JACKIE BUXTON ('73) (Location??) send in this e-mail... "Hey, Dennis. The hardest thing in the world (in my opinion) is to keep off weight that you have lost.  My sister and I and our daughters have fought this for all of our adult years.  I know that while you don't feel like exercising, it actually prevents depression (or works hard at it).  Also, regular exercise gives you more energy.  I know these words are easy to say and sometimes very hard to stay focused on.  But they are true and constant.  With your health scare, that may help you stay motivated in the right direction, but sometimes you just have to force yourself to take that 30-40 minute walk in the ol' neighborhood every morning or five times a week.  I find it easier to do it everyday so it becomes routine, rather than skip a day, and tell yourself, "I'll do it tomorrow," and then "well, I'll start fresh again on Monday."  But sometimes, you just have to make yourself do it! I don't say this as any type of "expert" on health and exercise, but quite the opposite, as one who continues to struggle with the weight issue. Anyone who has struggled with this all their adult life KNOWS how you are feeling and understands completely how HARD a challenge it is for you to exercise.  A regular walk in the neighborhood, or on the grounds of the school you work at, is free, and there for the taking.  Get back to it so your health will continue to improve and all of your friends will have you until you are 80!  But most of all, do it for YOURSELF!  Only you can make yourself DO IT!  I say this because I care and you are my friend, and I understand completely how difficult it is.  Maybe finding a friend to walk with will help!  GOOD LUCK BUDDY~ Your friend."  --- Jackie, thanks for your concern and taking the time to write to me. We'll see what happens. (5/28/06)

CAROL SPENCER ('78) San Antonio, Texas, checks in with me... "
Glad to hear you are alive, Dennis.  The Bell's Palsy will take time to disappear.  My cousin all of a sudden got it.  The left side of his face is slightly droopy, but it doesn't affect his speech or eating.  I hope yours is mild too." ---Yeah, the palsy gets easier to deal with every day. It flares up every now and then, but I can hide it. Thanks for checking in. Call me or stop by soon! (5/28/06)

CYNTHIA MILES ('75) Harlingen, Texas has written an important e-mail to me and asked me to share it with all classmates... "Hi Dennis,
My name is Cynthia Miles and I pray this e-mail finds you in good health. I went to school with your brother, Bob, and I even met you...at a birthday party when Bob and I were in the 5th or 6th grade. I just wanted to say thank you so much for this website, without it Steve Bilotta would have never found my e-mail. I am now divorced after 30+ years and have moved back to Texas. There is a big favor that I do want to ask you and I know I'm being very forward, because this comes from the heart..I have formatted a letter, which I am sending to all media in Texas and I am dedicating my life to this cause. Would you please find it in your heart to post this letter on your website? It's self-explanatory....Here is the letter....

In light of all the press on child sexual abuse, people need to be aware that there is a Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse in most states. Texas has such a law...10 years after the child’s 18th birthday. By nature, the crime of child sexual abuse is typically reported decades later. It takes time for the victims to come to terms with their pain, fear, shame and confusion. Couple this with the fact that the offenders/predators take extreme measures that enable them to avoid detection. The predators generally have the advantage of age, power, and position of authority and can threaten their victims in a way that makes a psychological imprint for decades. Pedophilia is an incurable condition and these criminals usually have dozens of victims in their lifetimes. By eliminating the Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse, this can aid in stopping serial abuse. The Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse leaves many victims out in the cold when they are finally able to come to terms with their abuse. As long as there is a Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse, these criminals are allowed, by law, to walk free and suffer no punishment whatsoever. The victims suffer the consequences for their abuser’s actions. Why should a predator be able to relax? I can assure you that their victims are never afforded that luxury. Victims deserve to have the liberating experience of having their claims vindicated in a neutral forum, on their own time. Victims deserve to have the legal system stand behind them as they search for some measure of justice and closure. By eliminating the Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse in Texas, this will ensure that these criminals are never “off the hook” in this state. This will keep the window open, at least. It will allow victims a chance to bring civil claims against their abusers. I would strongly urge all citizens of Texas to speak out against this law. Write and address this issue to our Congressmen and Senators of our state. Shame them into eliminating this Statute of Limitations on Child Sexual Abuse. To have such a law is criminal in itself. No one guilty of such a heinous crime should ever be permitted to feel that they are safe from prosecution or liability. Sincerely, Cynthia Miles, Harlingen, a Texas Survivor of child sexual abuse."
---Dear Cyndy, thanks for writing. I usually don't put such things on my website, but I believe in what you are saying and have chosen to post it. I hope that everyone gets to read it and takes it to heart. My best wishes to you. Love is all around.... Dennis (5/1/06)
APRIL 2006
GEORGE HUNTER ('74) Baghdad, Iraq, location that he could tell me, but would have to kill me afterwards, was in town for the Easter holiday this past week. He flew back to the war, this morning, 4/21/06. While he was here, he linked up with BRENDA GIBBS ('73), RALPH GALAVIZ ('69), MARIA GALAVIZ ('70), DON HAYNES ('70) and CLYDE GIBSON ('70). I was supposed to join the gang at Chili's Restaurant, but I checked my answering machine too late! Sorry guys.

George says his duties require him to remain in the Middle East turmoil for at least another two years, but he explictly says, he can't talk about his job. That's enough for me! I ain't friggin' curious enough to get shot over it! LOL He tells me that he got me a cool coffee mug from over there, but that the transportation he was riding in, through a combat zone, got "hit" and the mug broke. Damn! So, he got another one. Take care George and we'll be sure to link up next time so you can bring me that coffee mug you got got me. And for God's sake, keep your head down! All the best from all the Mustangs! (4/21/06)

Still looking fit and trim after all these years, our classmate, George Hunter ('70),
visited family and friends during the Easter 2006 holiday. I have never met a more patriotic, honest, or brave individual as George. He is a constant source of encouragement to me. We can rest easier knowing that he and others like him are devoted to the neverending struggle for peace and freedom in our troubled world. Keep your head down, George and know our prayers are with you.

RICHARD BRATZ ('70) Apple Valley, California, dropped me an
e-mail to let me know he's now a GRANDFATHER! His grandson,
Cameron Richard Bratz was born on Monday, April 17th at 1:16 PM.
He weighed in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. and 19.5 inches in length.
Congratulations to the parents and grandparents!

TIM HALLORAN ('71)
Houston, Texas, sent in an email... "Dennis, I just want to stay in touch with a hello and welcome to "High Speed Internet!"  It will enhance your world.
Hope your doing very well.  Keep the torch burning pal!" ---Thanks for the note, Tim. Yeah, this high speed internet is a hell of a lot better than dial-up. I don't know why I waited so long! (4/9/06)

RICK KIEFFER ('72)
Maple Valley, Washington, rushed here to San Antonio, this week, to be with his mom who was facing a medical crisis but has recovered and is doing well. Rick e-mailed me and I gave him a call at his mom's. He's doing well and wished me the best in my continuing recovery. He asked me about a few classmates and I brought him up-to-date as best that I could. Rick is the Chief of Police in Normandy Park, Washington. He heads back to Washington on Thursday morning. It's always good to hear from him and he's become a close friend over the years. Have a safe trip back, Rick-ster! (4/4/06)

MIKE DUNAGAN ('75) deep in the deserts of the Middle East stays in touch with me and sends this latest update... "Dear Dennis, its almost over, one week to go and I am out of here and on my way back to the states. I will be home in time for Easter for the first time in 4 years. It actually has been a good tour. I have been at Camp Liberty, Baghdad, Iraq. Actually got kind of spoiled, American Television, Internet Access, Pizza Hut, Subway, Popeye’s Chicken, Burger King and a big PX. And lots of fishing. I have fished in canals and lakes, in front of Saddam’s palace and by the two son’s palaces. I have caught some big fish, some little fish, and some ugly as heck fish.  And who else goes to the desert and finds enough water to fish in. It seems I have done a better job than I thought, since there was not a lot of work to do, just on occasion fixing some of what I called minor problems but it seems the unit appreciated it and presented me with a unit coin for “excellence from the Commander and Command Sergeant Major”. I know that one of the reasons it has been good over here is due to the prayers of thoughts of all those back home and I do appreciate it. I just hope I can do the same for all of you back home. Well that’s about it for now. I do want to thank everyone that has sent me e-mails, packages, and cards. They do make me feel closer to home."  (4/4/06)

Michael Dunagan (75), at left, gets his Unit Coin from his Command Sergeant Major. Mike is a civiliaan and works for a contractor in various locations in the Middle East.

MARCH 2006

ROBERT "BOB" DUPRIEST ('75) Floresville, Texas, is my youngest brother. His and his wife, Maricela's, first child and daughter, Heather Marie, is my god-daughter and is currently attending Incarnate Word University on the President's Scholarship, where she is studying to be a nurse. Bob's two youngest kids, Travis (a freshman) and Grace (7th grade) are soccer-crazy and damn good at it. Bob's second child/first son, Bobby (12th grade), has made a name for himself at Floresville High School. He was recently accepted to the University of Texas School of Engineering in Austin. Today, as a member of the high school Business Professionals of America organization and a member of the school's Robotics Team, he was featured in two news stories. So, indulge Uncle Dennis for a moment and check out these two links to the "Wilson County News" newspaper: Business Story  and Robotics Team Story . They even have a picture of Bobby. In one of the photos, he apparently wore shorts to school. I told my brother, if he can't afford to buy a FULL pair of pants for my nephew, hell, I'll take him shopping and buy him some myself! LOL All four kids make me so proud to be their Uncle Dennis. (3/23/06)

GEORGE MONK ('71)

FEBRUARY 2006

OUR FORMER JJHS COACH, RON LUNA, IS VERY ILL AND HIS FAMILY ASKS FOR  PRAYERS FROM THE MUSTANGS
If anyone missed the information on him, let me repeat it. It started with this e-mail that I received... "Dennis, I am Shirley Luna, Coach Ron Luna's wife. He is quite ill at the Methodist Hospital. It is his 9th hospitalization since last February. It is his heart and kidneys. All I am asking is for prayers for Ronnie. He gets better and worse over and over again. Each time we think he can come home, he has a setback, He has been in the hospital for 3 weeks this time. Prayer is a mighty force and a lot of prayers even stronger. Our love to the Mustang Family.”  (2/2/06)

So, visitors are allowed to see Coach Luna and visitors DO help his spirits greatly. He is in Room 681 at Methodist Hospital, 7700 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229. Visiting hours 9:00AM-9:00PM and you can also call him in his room directly: (210) 575-3678 during those same hours. He is in bed "A". His e-mail address is: rllsal@webtv.net

Coach just underwent his first dialysis, today, (2/10/06), and is weak from that, but he can still take calls. The main number to the Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center is: (210) 575-4000 and they can connect you in case he changes rooms, again. So, for those of you who believe in the power of prayer, please add Coach Luna to those whom you pray for.

UPDATE 2/19/06: An email from Mrs. Luna... "Dear Family and Friends,Some of you know that Coach has been very ill with heart failure and kidney failure. He was hospitalized from 12-30-05 to 1-9-06 (11 days)and again from 1-15-06 to 2-16-06 (33 days. Several days there were some close calls. He was started on Dialysis in the hospital and had four treatments while there. He now has to go for Dialysis on Tues.,Thurs. & Sat, for a four hour treatment each day. We chose to go to the treatment center his kidney specialist. Dr. Melissa Isbell, prefers. It is in the Medical Center, about a 45 min. drive from home. He has lost a lot of weight and is very weak from his ordeal. The treatments take a lot out of him, also. He is on oxygen most of the time, at home, in the car and at the center. It will be a new life style for us and we will adjust. The best thing is that I got to bring him home. He still has his wonderful attitude and that twinkle in his blue eyes. Thanks to all of you who came to see him in the hospital, called, sent cards and sent e mails. He enjoyed each gesture so much and each gesture gave me strength." Email Coach Luna at: rllsal@webtv.net

MICKEY MAHLER ('70) Salt Lake City, Utah, has written to tell me that he called Coach Luna in the hospital... "Dennis, I called Coach Luna and told him what a great guy he is....and how great you were too! We spoke for about 15 minutes and I told him my favorite Coach Luna story. He got a great belly laugh and his wife thanked me, later, for making him laugh! I would encourage all Mustangs, who were his students, to call with the things that they remember most about him." ---Mick, thanks for encouraging other Mustangs to give Coach a call. As soon as I finish tonight's work on the website, I'm going to give him a buzz." (2/8/06)

TONY SORIA ('70) California
, also wrote to tell me that he talked to Coach, as well... "Dennis, Thanks for the info on Coach Luna. I gave him a call, this morning and he is still the same soft spoken man that he always was. While talking to him, we spoke about an episode in P.E. class involving Gary Stevens '70 and I, way back when. Coach Luna also mentioned to me that you need to concentrate on your health. How have you been doing ? You'd better take care of yourself, too. This is a small world and life is too short. We're all depending on you to out live all of us and keep us together ....... So Damn it ; Keep up the good work !!!!!! Have a Great Day and May God Bless You!" ---Tony, you and Coach are truly caring and amazing men. Here, he is in the hospital, very ill, and you're out in California and the two of you are wondering how I'm doing and sending me good wishes. Please know how much I appreciate being thought of by both of you. I'm doing well. Getting stronger every day. My spirits are UP and my weight, blood pressure and diabetes is DOWN. Thank you for your friendship these many many years. Love IS all around, my friend." (2/6/06)

GEORGE HUNTER ('70) somewhere in the war zones of the Middle East [CLASSIFIED], has stayed in touch with me these many years, as he serves our nation in duties that he is not able to share with us. But he writes... "Dennis, it dismays me to hear of the health of our beloved Coach Luna. I am praying right now and will each and everyday as I can. God Bless him and his wife, Shirley, in their time of struggle and uncertainty. I hope they can just turn it over to God." ---Thank you for the kind words for the family, George. I'm sure they'll read it here and will appreciate it. (2/6/06)

SUSANNE SCHLAEGER ('76)
San Antonio, Texas was one of the first to respond to the call for prayers for Coach. She writes... "Dennis, This is why I LOVE to recieve email from you...you are the pipeline to everyone and to all news, good and bad. WE are all linked to each other. Coach Luna is a special man who means a lot to many of us. I will keep him in my prayers and continue to pray for you, your health and all the good you do." (2/5/06)

BILL MIZELL ('70)
Boerne, Texas is laid up resting from some serious surgery, recently. In fact, he'll be laid up for about six weeks from the operation on his left shoulder-- rotater cuff surgery to repair three torn ligaments, re-attach one back to the bone, which he tells me took four anchors to do, and also had the doc grind some bone spurs off. Can everyone say, "Hell, that hurts like a mother!!!" Bill's not even allowed to ride his brand new Harley or drive a car or truck, at all. I talked with him today and his spirits are high but the pain is something else despite the "magic pills." LOL It was just 18 months ago that Bill had the gastric bypass done and he's already lost (now get a load of this) 228 pounds!!! Damn, boy! That is fantastic!! We're all proud of you! You have everyone's best wishes for a speedy recovery from your surgery and if you need anyone to ride your Harley while you're healing, the waiting line starts right behind my ass!! (2/21/06)

THOMAS LOTT IS BACK IN THE MUSTANG CORRAL!

THOMAS LOTT II ('75), in Dallas, Texas, was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, Friday evening. 2/17/06. This is a huge honor for him as well as for John Jay High School and Northside ISD.

After graduating JJHS in 1975 and being courted by almost every major college in the country, Lott decided to attend the University of Oklahoma where he had an awesome career as a quarterback (#6) running the Sooners’ wishbone offense for three seasons. Where is he now? Well, he's an assistant football coach at Molina High School in the Dallas Independent School District.

His son, Thomas Lott III, is a running back for the Rice Owls. Guess what??? Thomas has listed is e-mail address with us! Click this link #6 and write him!

LORI McDERMOTT ('70)
Ashburn, Virginia, is gonna be a grandma for the first time! I recently told her that I was amazed how she and I have a growing friendship despite the fact that we never met when she was at JJHS for the very first year before the family transfered. She writes... "Dennis- You may be strange, but I don't think anyone would call you a stranger!  LOL!  Seriously, I doubt you've ever met a person who wasn't your immediate friend. I've been praying for you since we "met" last year when I found the website.  I thank God for you and the website that has brought me a connection with a happy time in my life.  Ahhh to be a high school freshman again!  (NO WAY!) I thought you might like to hear our family's great news!  Our daughter, Casey, and her wonderful husband, Joe, who are living in Germany right now, are expecting their first child -our first grandchild - on August 23rd! I remember that you told me that STEVE MAYS ('70) lives here in Ashburn and that LOUIS MARTINEZ ('70) lives about 12 minutes away, as well. I haven't has the chance to track them down, yet. You asked me how three classmates could end up living so close to one another while so far away from San Antonio. I'm not sure, but Ashburn is close to Washington DC. Maybe that's it! It is a nice place to live, but is very expensive. We're planning to retire to the Texas Hill Country in a couple of years and buy our dream home. I am so sorry to hear the news about your Bell's Palsy, Dennis. Glad to know it will eventually go away and I'm praying for your speedy recovery and continued good news about your weight loss, lowering blood pressure, and improvements in your diabetes!" ---Congratulations on the coming grandbaby and thank you for the kind words and concern. Hey! I get the first dinner invitation when you move back here, girl!! (2/16/06)

DENNIS DUPRIEST [Me] ('70) well, guess what? As if I don't have enough things going wrong with me and my life, this past Monday morning (2/13/06) I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. The right side of my face is partially paralyzed. My right eye is dropping, I can't fully blink nor close the eye. It has to be taped down when I sleep or the eyeball will dry out. I have to talk out of the left side of my mouth, as my right side can't move due to the paralysis. My speech is somewhat slurred.  Heck, I can't even drink from a glass or blow my nose properly. I have no sense of taste or feeling on my tongue or the inside of my mouth on the right side. I'm afraid to say to myself, "What the hell else can happen to me?" because something else just might! LOL Good news is that I have lost 44 lbs. as of today. While my heart failure recovery process and this Bell's Palsy has slowed me down a bit, I still keep on truckin'! (2/15/06)

INFORMATION ON BELL'S PALSY
Bells palsy is a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. It's caused by trauma to the 7th cranial nerve, and is not permanent. However, restoration fo the nerve can takes weeks, months, even up to a year. Diabetics (which I am) are more than 4 times more likely to develop Bells palsy than the general population. Bells palsy should not cause any other part of the body to become paralyzed, weak or numb. Most people either wake up to find they have Bells palsy, or have symptoms such as a dry eye or tingling around their lips that progress to classic Bell's palsy during that same day. This all manifested itself in me, yesterday (Sunday). Occasionally symptoms may take a few days to be recognizable as Bells palsy. The degree of paralysis should peak within several days of onset - never in longer than 2 weeks. A warning sign may be neck pain, or pain in or behind the ear prior to palsy, (which I had), but it is not usually recognized in first-time cases. Approximately 50% of Bells palsy patients will have essentially complete recoveries in a short time. Another 35% will have good recoveries in less than a year.

Regardless of the trigger, Bell's palsy is best described as an event - trauma to the nerve. As with any other injury, healing follows. The quality and duration of recovery is dependent on the severity of the initial injury. If the nerve has suffered nothing more than a mild trauma, recovery can be very fast, taking several days to several weeks. An "average" recovery is likely to take between a few weeks and a few months. The nerve regenerates at a rate of approximately 1-2 millimeters per day, and can continue to regenerate for 18 months, probably even longer. Improvement of appearance can continue beyond that time frame. The possibility of recurrence had been thought to be as high as 10 - 20%. These figures have been lowered as more has been learned about conditions that are now diagnosed as other types of facial palsies. Estimates of the rate of recurrence still vary widely, from around 4 - 14%. Most recent reports hover at 5 - 9%. The average timespan between recurrences is 10 years.

Ashburn, Virginia, only went to JJHS for one year, but since finding my website and my writing her to welcome her back to the Mustang Corral, she feels like one of us, again. She read all the remarks about that "friggin' e-mail" and she writes, "Dear Dennis- At first, I thought sending that 'friggin' e-mail' tthrough the loop was not a good idea and just added to your hurt.  I'm glad you decided to send it because you now know how many people appreciate you!  I'm sure there are many others, who didn't respond, who appeciate you, too!  Those who don't are in the minority and can simply choose not to read your e-mails or ask (politely) to be removed. I only found your site less than a year ago and wasn't able to attend theMustang SHINDIG  reunion in July 2005.  How I wish I had been able to attend!  Because of the e-mail comments I just read, I am going to make an effort to find more friends that I lost track of 36 years ago, when we moved. Someday, we'll retire to Texas and I can be more involved. Until then, I remain the friend you never met." ---Ahhh, but we HAVE met, Lori, right here, in the warmest, friendliest, most caring place on earth-- my Mustangs website! We just haven't hugged, yet! Thank you for your kind words and I look forward to huggin you one day soon! (2/11/06)

LINDA SMITH ('73) Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, e-mailed a short, but very sweet note... "Thanks Dennis for all you do.  You're an inspiration to us all.  Next time I'm in San Antonio I would like to stop in and say hi.  I never knew you and I graduated in ' 73, but I appreciate what you are doing. I  hope to make it to San Antonio sometime this summer.  I hope your recovery continues and you're able to make a full comeback." ---Linda, thanks for writing and I would love to see you and get to know you better. Thanks for your kind words and glad that you enjoy this website. Does that mean a donation is on the way?? Take care. (2/10/06)

JERI LOGGINS ('74)
Location Unknown, says we've met each other only once. She writes... "Hi, Dennis- I'm a '74 graduate and met you at a recent reunion ablut (3-4 years ago). I've enjoyed all your e-mails and updates. You are such a loyal mustang.  Keep up the good work. I sincerely hope that your health continues to improve each day. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. You are in my prayers. I would have written earlier to give you my support, but I have recently (last 7 weeks) lost my mom (12/12), grandmother (1/5) and father (1/30)-all to pneumonia.  It has been a very difficult time for me and my immediate family. We've had lots of loving support from friends, neighbors, and family members. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow. Sincerely." ---Jeri, I am so sorry to hear such sad news on the loss of your parents and grandma'. On behalf of all your fellow Mustangs, please know you have our best wishes. Thank you for writing me and for your kind, warm sentiments. It means so very much. Be sure to stay in touch. Much love to you! (2/10/06)

LEO FIGUEROA ('73) San Antonio, Texas is a lawyer and he "Googled" the school name- John Jay and found my website. I asked him if he's related to our classmate, LOUIS FIGUEROA '70, but he's not. He writes... "Dennis: I found your website and learned of your recent health problems. I pray that you are on the road to a full recovery. I'm a '73 graduate of John Jay, graduating with your brother, Tom. Keep up the good work and I'll drop you a donation in the mail soon. I live and work here in San Antonio. I'm an attorney and have been practicing law for twenty-two years. I've been married for almost 28 years and we have three beatiful daughters. Do give Tom my regards." ---Leo, I forwarded your e-mail to my brother and I hope he gets in touch with you. Thanks for "Googling" me and finding this website. Thanks also for your pledge of financial support. What a way to come back to the Mustang Corral after 30+ years! Be sure to stay in touch." (2/10/06)

SHERRY CLONTZ ('73) San Antonio, Texas, sent me an email, today. She and her husband, Terry, own and host a business called, "Local Vocals Karaoke & DJ." She srites... "Hello, Dennis- I was surprised to stumble on your website, last night. I found it quite enjoyable, especially the articles about Captain Gus and yourself. I am curious though, as a graduate of Jay in 1973, I seem to have no luck in finding any information on the "Class of 1973". Over the years, my yearbook was lost and I have never been able to locate another one. I have never been contacted about reunions, which I understand because finding people can be difficult. My older sister was also a JJHS grad and I inetnd to tell her about your site. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I hope you are recovering well from last year's heart trouble." ---Sherry, I am glad that you found my website. It's always great to be "discovered." You ask about past yearbooks and that has to be the #1 question that I am asked. Sorry, but there is no way to get any past yearbooks. I wished that some classmate computer whizz of ours would scan some of the old books and make them available to our classmates on DVD, but I don't think anyone has or is willing to do that. Old class photos can still be gotten, however. The University of Texas in Austin has the entire GOLDBERG photo archives. They are the ones who took the photos at JJHS for many years. In fact, I still use them to take our reunion panoramic photo! You can get in touch with UT and buy those big panoramic class photos, but they run about $50 each. At least, that's what they cost me about 20 years ago. As for reunions, some people have little get-togethers every year or so and I Danny Padron ('69) host multi-class reunion SHINDIGS every five years. While mainly for the class of 1969-1970-1971, we let everyone attend. Our latest was July 2005 with over 350 people attending from classes 1969-1985 or so. Try visiting my email links page on this website and email some of your classmates and see if they know of any reunions going on. Thanks you so much for your kind words about my health. I appreciate it. And, if ya' really like this website, we'd appreciate a donation to keep us going. Thanks for writing and please stay in touch. By the way, who is your older sister? (2/1/06)

DIANNE WEBB ('75) Grand Junction, Colorado, found this website and writes to me... "Dear Dennis, I hope this finds your health better and improving. I am a '75 JJHS graduate and was wondering if there are any plans for a combination reunion for all the classes. I thought some one told me in October, every year, there is one that any class can attend. Would love to know! Thanks." --- Dianne, as you can see I pretty much covered the subject of this year's reunions in the letter above that arrived the same day as yours. All I can say to everyone is that if there are any reunions being planned this year, please send me the information and I will post it hear on the website. Thanks for finding this site, Dianne, and I hope you'll stay in touch and send in a donation to keep this flame burning brightly. (2/1/06)

BOB SHAFFAR ('70)
Converse, Texas, and his wife Sandy, paid me a surprise visit, recently, to see how I've been doing. Bob has worked for the San Antonio Express-News for many years. I think Sandy is a JJHS grad, but I can't remember. We had a great time remembering the good old days at Jay. Bob designed and printed special reunion books for us for many years and did an excellent job. (2/1/06)

JANUARY 2006
ME ('70)
in San Antonio, Texas, went out to dinner with a bunch of GUYS, last night and had a great time laughing a storm-- JACK MATTHEWS ('66), LINN HUGHES ('69), KAY COMPTON ('71), BILL MIZELL (70), TOY KELLY ('71), STEPHANIE COPAS ('71), ED HOLLEY ('72) and BOB FRAZIER ('72). Bob had flown in all the way from Cairo, Egypt to be at the meeting! (Actually, he was in town for one week for his grandson's 6th birthday,) Kay came down from Dallas, just to be with us! Well, she had a lawyers seminar to attend in Austin on Saturday, so she squeezed the meeting in on Friday night for us. But, quite often, I'd say like at least 7-times a year, Kay drives or flies all the way down from Dallas exclusively just to attend our GUYS dinner meetings! Now, that's dedication!! I told her that she's welcome to spend the night at my house when she's in town so she doesn't have to spend money on a hotel. She told me she'd rather sleep at a homeless shelter before she'd accept my invitation! Sheeesh!! ------ Last night, Jack, who lives in Helotes at the famous "Matthew's Plantation and Religious Retreat," the home of the 'BIG Country Breakfast," owns a Harley motorcycle, and wore a Harley T-shirt. -------- Bob, who also owns a Harley motorcycle and has it in Egypt with him and used it to jump over 73 mummies at the pyramids, wore a Harley T-shirt. -------- Toy, who also owns a Harley motorcycle, wore a T-shirt that Harley would be proud to see a woman wearing. On the front is written... "My Harley is the BEST thing I've ever had between my legs!" (Not really, I just made that up! LOL) -------- Bill, who owns the newest Harley motorcycle wore a "My Little Pony" T-shirt, last night. He also wears the same get-up that the motorcycle guy in the VILLAGE PEOPLE wears with all the chains, leather hat, shades, humongous mustache (that he bought at H.E.B) and other stuff. The rest of us have our eye on Bill and I sit two tables away from him at dinner!! -------- Linn doesn't have a Harley motorcycle, but if she did, she wouldn't wear a T-shirt, it would be boobies to the wind! Yeee haaa! -------- Ed doesn't own a Harley motorcycle, but if he did, he'd wear three T-shirts at the same friggin time!  -------- I (Dennis) don't have a Harley motorcycle, but if I did, until I lose all my weight, when I rode it, I'd look like a turtle humping a snake! Well, enough Harley stuff. -------- Stephanie wants me to go walking with her at the new park near her home on Westshire. She says walking with her there will be great exercise for the both of us. She also whispered to me that it's not the kind of place that a girl should be walking alone. No problemo, Steph! At the first sign of trouble, I'll be the first to SCREAM and then, run and get help for ya'! Well, that's all I have to report from the January GUYS meeting! Dennis #001 (1/28/06) UPDATE: Just two hours after I posted the above message, I got an email from
