BA-DING-BING!!! BRIEF VIDEO OF
CAPTAIN GUS!!!
On
March 24, 2008, I received the folowing e-mail: "Hey, Dennis-- I was looking at YOU TUBE,
today, and ran across a kens tv news segment featuring Captain Gus,
including a short interview segment with Joe Alston. Here is the link
so you can let everyone enjoy it. I have watched that video clip on you
tube at least a dozen times. Captain Gus was one of a kind. By
the way, Dennis, I didn't know Joe Simpson was your uncle! I used
to listen to his mid-day report on KKYX. I can still hear him
say, "Joe Simpson, KKYX News" in the back of my mind. Bryan L. Hartman,
Hartman Music
Group, LLC, Rio Medina Tx."
What the video is shows the 50th Anniversary of KENS TV5. I supplied
them with the only video footage of Captain Gus to the station for this
TV special and they used it. Someone has taken the entire special and
divided it into four segments and uploaded it on YOU TUBE So, here is the only
footage of the "Captain Gus Show." I have an entire 30 minutes of
"The Captain Gus Story" so, if I can figure out a way to load it to the
internet, I'll do so. My thanks to Bryan for finding this!!

DEBORAH VAN PELT
('69)
in
Houston, Texas, sent me a hilarious card along with a donation check
for the website. She has been so kind to me over these past several
years and has stayed in touch. She and I got "The Most Changed"
award at SHINGDIG I . Geez,
that was like 25 or 30 years ago. It was the very first reunion and
wasn't even called SHINDIG. DANNY PADRON and others had
organized it. It was at that reunion that CLAIR NEYLAND
kissed me on the lips and I flipped out! I thought, if all it takes to
get Clair to kiss me, hell, I'll throw a reunion EVERY YEAR! What a
hoot. I also got a kiss from Deb as we accepted out awards. That was
another dream come true for me! Damn, after those two kissed me, I
could have gladly died!! My life was complete. LOL Well, let me just
say thank you to Deb for staying in touch and for her generosity. Love
you, girl! (6/22/08)

MARK NORMAN ('71) in
Louisville, Kentucky has sent in another donation out of the blue.
Oftentimes, he'll let me know a donation is in the mail and then, other
times, I just open my mailbox and theres a letter from him or from the
bank with a check. Thanks, Mark, I always appreciate your generosity. I
e-mailed him a THANK YOU note
and he replied... "Dennis, You
friendship has a value that is immeasurable. What you have done and
what you continue to do as the Keeper of the Flame will pay dividends
well into the future. Though not a direct comparison, the only thing I
can relate to is being a Scoutmaster. You touch so many lives. People
sometimes what it pays. I tell them, it pays more than any paying job
ever could. So it is with you. A modest donation is the least I could
do." ---Again, thanks for the
compliments, my friend, and thanks for your continued generosity
(5/15/08)
JANINE RODRIGUEZ ('71)
in North Richland Hills, Texas, sent in a generous donation a
few weeks ago, but I have hesitated posting it with the other
information that she sent in her letter. I always check back with
people who sent "extra" news so I can be sure that they don't mind that
I share it here on the website. It's been a couple of weeks since I
e-mailed her, but to no response. I'm going to take the chance that she
doesn't mind, so here's a part of what she wrote to me... "Dennis, I hope this letter finds you
well. I'm not able to view my e-mails at work and when I get home I
never seem to find the time to get on the computer. I finally buckled
down and sneaked a peek and saw your recent e-mail. I always enjoy
hearing from you and wanted to send you a brief note. To bring you
up-to-date on me-- I am doing well after a stent was placed in my
heart, back in December. I had 90% blockage.. I am doing better. My
25-year old daughter, Dana, graduated with her MBA from TCU, last year.
It's wonderful! Now my money is MY money and I can save for
retirement!! LOL Enjoy Spring and take care! --- Janine, thanks so much for he donantin and
I'm so happy to know your health is doing better. That's scarey
with a 90% blockage! I don't know if I have that problem or not. Not
curious enough to find out, either. Congratulations to your daughter
and if you're ever visiting San Antonio at the end of the month, and
it's the LAST Friday of the month, come visit the GUYS at Pizza Hut.
Call me for details 674-6767. (5/11/08)
MARY "MIMI" VERBOIS ('69) in Dixon, Illinois, also made a

MASON
WRIGHT ('70) Corpus Christi, Texas came into town for
the GUYS meeting, tonight (4/25/08). He made a generous cash conation
to the website and I sincerely appreciate it. Mason tells me Reynolds
Alumni for whom he has been working for years, has a reduction in force
and he got a great severance package. He's going to use some of his
money to attend a technical school to learn how to become a crane
operator like those that unload tanker ships in the harbour and load
them onto 10-wheelers. We all wish him the beat and going into a new
career. (4/25/08)
CARL
JENSEN ('70) in Newport News, Virginia, is
celebrating 18 months of being prostate cancer free!! That is great
news to hear. He's still working for a Defense Contrator with the High
Altitude Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and enjoys the work that
helps to give added protection to our tropps in war zones. He gets to
travel all over the nation. He's got some trips taking him to Canada
pretty soon, as well. Carl increased his already awesome annual donation to keep this
website going and I say thank you so very much. In fact, in the 10
years of his spoort, Carl has donated
over $1,000 to the website and because of his wonderful
generosity, and that of others like him, the journey continues. Carl
also assures me that he and a close knit group of other friends, from
the old Lackland Baptitst gang, keep me in their prayers for my
continued healing. Thanks, Guys! I do believe in the power of prayer.
It means a lot to me. Speaking of healing, Carl asked me if I had heard
the status of our classmate CATHY BACON ('70), who is
battling breast cancer. Cathy also lives in Virginia and Carl gets to
see her at church every once in a while, but he says he hasn't in quite
some time, now. Well the last that I heard, Cathy told me by e-mail
that things were going well. It's still a battle for her, but she's
hanging in there. Let's add Cathy to our prayers for a full and speedy
recovery. In other news, Varl syas he stays in weekly touch with GEORGE HUNTER ('70)
who is still in the middle east theatre of war. Of the stories that I
have heard, I thank God that George is on OUR side!! He's been over
there for over 10 years, I believe. (4/12/08)

busy with family and health is doing good considering. The docs say
that according to my test results I should be in the Mr Universe
contest, but I say I am a candidate for the Mr Anorexia contest.
Actually am doing pretty good considering, 4 years now cancer free,
just have to fight the side effects of the "cure". My family is doing
great. I am still living in Killeen, TX. I now have 1 son that is a
Harker Heights, TX Cop, 1 son that is a Killeen, TX Fireman, and 1 son
that is a salesman of drill bits in Oklahoma City (don't laugh, he
makes twice the money I do playing with computers). Now have 6
grandkids (from 1 year to 8 years) and we stay busy with all of them. I
do not deploy anymore, basically sit on my tail at a computer and play
with data and create database programs as a military contractor. I
still include you in our prayers and always look forward to reading the
updates on your website. I do visit the blog occasionally and think its
great, but I usually do not spend that much time on the computer at the
house." ---Mike,
it's always good to hear from you and to know that you're doing well.
Glad to hear that you're still kicking cancer's ass and keeping it out
of your life. Hell, those grandkids need you, dude! Thank you for your
continued generosity. It blows me away every time you make a donation
because you've done more than your share, my friend! It's also good to
hear that you won't be delpoying to the Middle Easy anymore. Time to
take it easy, soldier. You've deserved it! (3/10/08)

RENITA FOSTER ('71)
has sent in the only donation for the month of February, so far, and a BIG and GENEROUS donation it is. She has
always been generous with her funds for the website. Come to think of
it, she has also been very generous with her KISSES every
time we get to see one another. Yeee Haaaa! Renita, thank you for
your most charitable gift for the wensite.
Right now, she's on pins and needles wondering if her daughter will be
choosing to attend St. Mary's Law School, here in San Antonio. If so,
the family will pull up their roots in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and
come back to the Alamo City. Keep your fingers crossed for Renita. I
hope ya' get back to Texas!!
She sent along this photo of her receiving the "Liberty Bell Award:
from the Fort Monmouth Army Post Public Affairs Office for a news
article she wrote. Although a retired colonel, Renita still enjoys
writing for military publications and dodes an excellent job of it.
Last year, she flew over to Normandy Beach to interview World War II
veterans about their D-Day experiences. She has won numerous journalism
awards. Congratulations, Renita. Your fellow Mustangs are very proud of
your accomplishments. (2/22/08)

CURRENT CLASSMATE
NEWS:
JANUARY - JUNE 2008
Anytime a classmate shares
news with me, I am happy to post it here under "Current Classmate
News." Every six months, I archive the "Current News" and start a new
page. News of the past 10 1/2 years can be found by returning to the
INDEX page and looking under the dates of the ARCHIVES.
Remember, I can't share your news with classmates if YOU don't tell me.
I also accept photos and post them here on this page when I can.
The lyrics to the Beatles song, "InMy Life"...
pretty much sum up why I do these reunions and this website.
"There
are places I'll remember, all my life,
though some have changed. Some forever, not for
better. Some have gone and some
remain. All these places had
their moments, with lovers and
friends, I still can recall. Some are
dead and some are living.
In my life, I've
loved them all. In my life, I've loved
you
more."
Love is all around,

JUNE 2008
Haven't heard from anyone. No news to
report.
MAY 2008
| KIM NUCKOLLS ('72) Lubbock,
Texas, was my last steady girlfriend of my Senior year at JJHS. I still
remember spending graduation night sitting on the couch in her family
den and making out till like 2:00AM, before I left to check out some
graduation parties! Our song was "Close
To You" by the Carpenters and I can't tell you the times I have
thought of Kim over the years when I hear that song. We had some
great times together going on dates in my 1963 Ford Falcon station
wagon. It wasn't the coolest car, but at least it got me around town! I
haven't heard from her in a dozen years, I'd say, and then, today
(5/23/08) I get an e-mail from her from out of the blue!! Talk about
surprises! This is one of the biggest for me in the past decade. I
really had no idea where Kim was or what she might be doing and it
turns out she's right where I last heard she was and doing what she had
been doing! LOL She writes... "Hey
there Dennis! I was checking out the JJ web site and saw a
notation that several of us had bad e-mail addresses and you were
requesting updates, so wanted to share mine. Also am sending a recent
pic. I never would have imagined being 54 and
having braces! I'm still in Lubbock; been here 12 years. I
never
thought I'd stay. You may remember I moved here after my
divorce.
Been at the same job, too. Legal assistant at one of the city's
oldest
law firms. Just recently bought a house; figured after 12 years,
I
wasn't going anywhere - ha. Got Joe Hinojoza's e-mail
address off your
site a few years back, and it was a shock that we'd
been living in the
same city all this time but never ran into each other. There is
also
someone else here who was a cheerleader - Karen - I can't remember
her
name; she is married to this IT guy who did work for our firm.
Very,
very small world. Anyhow, just wanted to say hello and give you
my
updated e-mail address. I enjoy looking at your site from time to
time. Take care!" --
Kim, by the way, I just spoke with my mom and told her I got your
e-mail and she still remembers you and sends you her best wishes. (Geez... at age 75 my mom still remembers
my high school girlfriends! ) You still have that cute "chipmunk
cheeks" smile that I always kidded you about. (Always done out of love
and you know that.) Well, Kim, take care and stay in
touch! (5/23/08) |
--- Kim it's great to hear from
you after so long! That girl, -Karen- you
speak of is "Karen Wallis '71" who came down for the reunion, last
year. In fact she's been to several of them over the years. It is so
awesome to hear from you and it's wonderful to know you're doing so
well. I've never been to Lubbock, but have wanted to visit the Buddy
Holly museum for a long time. Maybe, now, knowing that you're there,
I'll make it up, some day. We have a lot of catching up to do, so
give me a call one
of these days. I'm glad you still visit the website. It's my tool to
the outside world. LOL

MARY "MIMI" VERBOIS ('69)
in Dixon, Illinois, announces her FIRST grandson, Devin. She is as proud as she can
be! Mimi sent me a "Get Well" prayer card to lift my spirits in my
current difficult times. She also
included a very generous donantion
for the website. Mimi, thanks so much for the donation, I
appreciate it
very much. Funds have been getting tight, and it's because of wonderful
people like yourself that I am able to "keep the flame burning
brightly" with the website. You are so sweet!
In her card, she included a brief note,,, "Dennis, I've been thinking of you and
praying for you and your health issues. I have enclosed a photo of me
and my first grandson taken about two months ago. He is now almost 7
months old. The day he was born, my brain turned to "mush," and I fell
head-over-heels in love with this blessing from our Lord. We (Devin
& I) are best buddies and make each other just light up! Take
care, Dennis and God bless you! Love, Mimi"
Mimi, your grandson is beautiful and he's so luck to have YOU as his
grandmother!! Thank you for your prayers for my health. It means so
much to know my friends care. God bless you, too! (5/18/08)

PAUL LINDY ('70) RETIRES AFTER 30+ YEARS AT
MacARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL AND GETS
BASEBALL
FIELD NAMED AFTER HIM!
Classmate,
BOB WILLIAMS ('69)
in Houston, Texas, alerted me to news stories in the San Antonio
Express-News. Bob writes...
"Dennis,
Don’t know whether you saw or
not, but here is an article regarding Paul Lindy retiring as the
baseball coach from
MacArthur. Coaching was Paul’s life and he helped a lot of young men.
We don’t give enough credit
to our teachers and the way they help shaped our lives. Paul was a fraternity brother of mine at SWTSU,
now TSU." --Bob,
I share earlier college memories of Paul. He and I carpooled together
to San Antonio College (SAC) for the first year. Next time you see him,
ask him about our adventures with a girl named, Brenda, and then, ask
him
about "Niagra Falls." (5/3/08)
COACH PAUL LINDY
RETIRES A VICTOR!
By Lorne Chan, San Antonio Express-News
Longtime MacArthur baseball coach Paul
Lindy retired after the Brahmas'
final regular-season game Thursday, ending a 30-year career at the
school, including 28 as head baseball coach. Lindy, 56, was honored in
a surprise ceremony at Blossom Athletic Center after MacArthur's
five-inning, 14-0 win over Lee. He finished his career with a record of
444-273 as head coach. MacArthur also
will name its practice baseball field after Lindy.
"He has such a great knowledge of the
game and care for his players," MacArthur athletic coordinator and head
football coach Van Fuschak said. "Paul's a guy that shows up at school
to help 12 months out of the year, ever since he first got here."
The Brahmas have had 19 winning seasons under Lindy. Their best season
came in 1987 when they reached the state championship game, losing to
Abilene Cooper in the final. This season, MacArthur finished 21-10 but
missed the playoffs.
LINDY
LEAVING PART OF HEART AT MacARTHUR By David Flores, San Antonio Express-News
That
Paul Lindy has a
difficult time talking about his resignation as
MacArthur baseball coach without choking up should come as no surprise
to those who know him. After all, it's never easy to walk away from
something that's defined so much of one's life for so long. In Lindy's
case, coaching and teaching at MacArthur the past 30 years hasn't been
so much a job as it's been a vocation. If some think that's maudlin,
they don't know the man who guides and nurtures the students in his
U.S. history class and his players as if they were his children. There
was a time, though, when Lindy might have seen things differently.
“Any young coach, when he's starting
out, probably focuses more on the
game and the success that comes with the wins,” Lindy said
Tuesday.
“But the longer you coach, the more
you start looking at the big
picture. You become aware of the higher calling of helping these kids
learn how to be successful in life and develop character.”
Let the record reflect that
Paul
Joseph Lindy has done that, and much
more, since arriving at MacArthur in 1978. Hired by Frank Arnold, then
the Brahmas' football coach, Lindy was an assistant to baseball coach
Syl Perez for two years before succeeding him in the fall of 1980.
MacArthur went 444-273 and made the playoffs 12 times in 28 seasons
under Lindy, who led the Brahmas to the Class 5A state final in 1987.
Lindy's last MacArthur team missed the playoffs but finished 21-10 and
routed Lee 14-0 in its finale last Thursday. Lindy, 56, has coached the
Brahmas for so long that it's difficult to imagine someone else filling
out their lineup card. To say his emotional ties with MacArthur run
deep wouldn't even begin to describe his relationship with the school's
community.
Lindy says,
“This is a great
environment to work in. We have great
kids, and the people I work with are great, too.. After 30 baseball
seasons and 34 years in coaching, I'm emotionally, physically and
mentally drained. I'm going to take some time off and recharge. Maybe a
year from now, I'll look for an opportunity to get back in the game
somehow.”
The scene after his last game with the Brahmas reflected what the
school has meant to Lindy and vice versa. Presented a plaque by
officers of the MacArthur booster club, a
surprised Lindy stood at home plate and gratefully acknowledged a warm
ovation from fans, parents, former players, principal Bobbie Turnbo and
football coach/athletic coordinator Van Fuschak.
Mike Copple, the ace pitcher on the Brahmas' 1987 state finalist who
now lives in Austin, was among those in the crowd.
“That tells you the kind of respect
the players have for Paul,” Fuschak
said.
“If they didn't feel that way
about him, they wouldn't come back.
He was tough on them, but they knew he cared about them.”
For the most part, Lindy managed to keep his composure during the brief
ceremony. But his emotions got the best of him in the end.
“The hardest part for me was turning
around when it was all over and
looking at my players,” said Lindy, who is single and has no
children.
“That's when it really hit me, that
this was it. That's the only time I
really, really broke down. It was very difficult.”
Fittingly, MacArthur's baseball
practice field will be named in Lindy's honor.
“That field has been my escape,” he
said. “That's where I go do my best thinking.”
As Lindy moves on, we can rest assured that part of his heart always
will remain on that field.

SAM SARRIZIN (‘70)
in San Antonio, Texas, writes
to me to ask a JJHS trivia question...
“Hey Dennis, just wanted to say hey. My wife, Vickiem
and I are doing good. Got a question for you. Warren Whitaker and Glen e-mailed me and asked me if Fred Pointer ('71) was offered/accepted a scholarship in
football from UT Austin or SWTS in San Marcos and I can't
remember. Maybe you do?" ---Sam,
I am stumped. I cannot recall at all, so let's open up the question to
everyone. Does anyone know the answer?? (4/27/08) STEVE MAYS (‘70) in Virginia has an
answer to Sammy Sarrizin’s trivia question about Fred Pointer. He
writes... “ – "As I recall Fred did
receive a scholarship to UT, but didn’t stay there. I don’t
recall the reason he left.I think he went to SWTSU after that but
I don’t recall for sure. Speaking of trivia and Fred, he was the only
guy who ever hit a home run off me when I pitched in baseball in Little
League and Babe Ruth League. That includes facing guys like Randy
Beatty, Steve Smith, Beetle Jacobs, Tommy and Jimmy McDuff, Eddie
Riddle, Tim and Tommy Yates, Mike Proctor, Tony Pellitier, and Jim
Ramsey. I didn’t have much of a fastball, but my curve was
wicked. Once when I was a base runner, someone tried to pick me off
first base, but I dove back and clipped Fred in the back of the legs.
He fell down on top of me and was so upset because he thought he had
killed me. Maybe he just wasn’t mean enough for football at UT, but he
could sure hit a baseball a long way." (4/29/08)
MARSHA DAVID (‘71) in Englewood, Florida is coming back to live in Texas!! Marsha
looked so fabulous at the reunion, last year. I gotta see her again.
She writes... “Hey Dennis - It was
good to hear from you! I just wanted to pass on some news. My
daughter and I are moving to Austin, this summer. I decided I'd really
like to be closer to my brothers. Dean and his family are in Austin and
Mark is in San Antonio. Also the job market will be a little
better than here in Englewood, Florida. I'm looking forward to
seeing some old friends from school. The only person I know of
from Jay in Austin is Fred Butler. Do you know of anyone else I'd
know? Thanks for all that you do Dennis. Please take care of
yourself and keep in touch. Love." ---Marsha, how wonderful to hear from you!
Glad that you’re moving back to Texas and closer to me! The hell with
who else lives in the Austin area, you just think about me!! LOL
Anyone living in the Austin area that remembers Marsha, please write to
her and get in touch to welcome her back to Texas. But seriously,
Marsha, let’s hook up for dinner when ya’ get back to the Lone Star
State!! (4/28/08)
MONNA STEPHENS (‘71) in Grapevine, Texas brings me up to date
on here life with a great e-mail... "Hi
Dennis, All is well in the Dallas/Fort Worth area too. In fact I just
became a grandmother for the sixth time in just over 7-years.Timothy
Lucas Castello was born on April 15th to my daughter Alicia and her
husband Keith, who also lives in the DFW area. At least now we can look
forward to something better than paying more taxes on that date.
For my classmates that have become (or will be) Grandparents, you know
there is nothing better. Two weekends ago, I joined Donna and our
younger sister, Kris, in Fredericksburg, TX for a long weekend
visit. On our list of "must do's" we went to the Hanger Hotel to
purchase yet another t-shirt for Donna's husband Calvin. Not only
did we enjoy last year's Reunion, but so did our spouses.
Marc and Calvin have already decided that if the next reunion is
anything like last year, they will break theirs promise
NEVER to attend yet another reunion with us. Donna's (DONNA STEPHENS '70) email address has recently changed to
astrow@wildblue.net. Anyway, I think that's it. As soon
as she returns to the US, I'll confirm her address (she's in
Canada). We talk on the phone almost daily, so I seldom send an
email down to South Texas. (Thank goodness for unlimited calling
plans). Thanks for prompting an email. Like many of us, I take
your communications for granted, and shouldn't. Thanks again for
keeping us connected after all these years. Love always." ---Monna, I cherish the times you e-mail
me. You always bring me up to date and make me feel so good to hear
from you. Congratulations on your new grandchild. What a blessing!!
Glad that you made a return trip to Fredericksburg. I am already making
plans for the 2010 reunion up there. Thanks for Donna’s new e-mail
address. Love you!! (4/27/08)
JIM PROCTOR (‘71) in San Antonio, Texas was the first
person to tell me who it was that said... “If I knew I was going to live this long,
I’d have taken better care of myself.” You all may recall I
quoted that quote in my last e-mail to everyone regarding my own
health, but I didn't know who had said it. Well, Jimbo said... "Hey Dennis, great to hear from you, hope
all is going great for you. All is well from this end. It was Mickey
Mantle that made the comment that you quoted. Take care." ---Thanks for letting me know, Jim. I
thought it had been W.C. Fileds, but you're right! (4/27/08)
WARREN WHITAKER ('70) in Austin, Texas writes... "Dennis, It is always great to hear from
you!!! I believe it was Mickey Mantle that said, "If I knew I was
going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself."
At least that is the first person I heard that quote from. Not a whole
lot to brag about on my end. Still working for UT Austin and
living in Wimberley. We are hoping for a lot more rain so the Blanco
River will get up in time for tubing season, but it is looking unlikely
at this point. MARK LOISELLE (‘70) came down to Denton from Wisconsin a
couple of weeks ago and I drove up for a couple days and visited with
him, his brother Jon and his Mom. We played some golf (Mark kicked my
butt again...geez). They are doing well and the visit was well
worth the drive (and gas expense!). Thanks again for all that you do
and I hope to see you sometime in the near future. With Best Wishes."
---It’s always great to hear from you,
too, Warren. I trust that things are going well in Austin. It’s strange
that we live so close to one another but haven’t seen each other in
quite a while. We need to do something about that! Glad to hear that
Mark is doing well. Gimme a call, dude. (4/27/08)
HARREL SCOTT (‘70) Canyon Lake, Texas stays in touch
with me by e-mail and phone call. His latest e-mails reads... “Dennis I am doing well having just had a
bad sinus infection. I have had a close friend staying at my
house recovering from open heart surgery , he say's he is about ready
to go back to his place though , guess he has had enough " you cant do
that's " from Robin and I. I and another friend havent let him
drive for over two months. Glad to hear your doing as well as you
are but hope you improve with time like we should with age, right , I
think that's the way it should be? As for donating funds for the web
site , let wait untill my business increases , then I promise I will be
able to. I appoligise for not wrighting more often but then I
always liked to meet friends in person , it's more fun that way.
If you remember to remind me or call me a few day's before one of the
friday meetings I'll make one of them soon on my Gold Wing as I average
38-40 mpg as long as I take it easy with my hand on the throutle.
As for your health always remember faith in yourself , god , family ,
and friends will always add joy to your life no matter how hard times
become. KEEP THE FAITH." ---
Good to hear from ya’, buddy. That is so kind of you to open your home
to a friend for recvoery. I know how kind you were to me by taking me
to the visitation service when Mrs. Finder died. You clcoked over 150
miles that day, just coming to S.A. picking me and taking me home. You
have such a BIG heart. Thanks for staying in touch! (4/27/08)
RENITA FOSTER (‘71) Fort Monmouth, New Jersey drops a line to
me... “Dennis, how wonderful to hear from you! I keep trying to do the
Sunday night chats but with a wake up at 5 a.m. it's kind of late for
me. I will try one of these days. I have some good news. I was lucky
enough to win another journalism award. This was first place for Story
Series in Dept. of the Army. Unfortunately, the JAG office wasn't to
happy. This was the court martial story of a LTC caught enticing little
boys on the internet to have sex. I was proud of the young Captain who
offered to take the case and nail the creep. he got a record 31 years
to Fort Leavenworth! My daughter, is also going to law school in the
fall but can't make up her mind where yet. I will be going to Hawaii
and Normandy this summer to do interviews for next year's 65th invasion
anniversary! Cheers.” ---Congratulations
on your journalism award, Renita. You have had a very rewarding career.
It’s amazing how you get to “live’ so many different things though your
writing. Keep it up. We’re all proud of you! (4/27/08)
ROSS RAYMOND (‘69) in Katy, Texas, bring me totally
up=to=date on his life... “Dennis,
Life is certainly on the fast track at our house. Seems the years
pass every so fast. This year the little girl who was born the
year I turned 40 is graduating from high school. If I am lucky
she will graduate from UT Austin by the time I turn 61, maybe 62 if she
follows the current trend towards less than timely graduation. I am
working on a house in San Antonio, near Highlands HS which I hope to
rent out in the near term. If you know of anyone who wants to live
south of I-10 off Gevers Road area, I might have just what they want,
or need. Oh, I forgot, I am running for school board here in Katy ISD.
Strange how politics works. A couple of items I have been asking the
board to put up for a vote this past year are now being talked about,
not passed, but talked about. I am seeking the current board
President's seat and he has made it known he might be willing to push
for a few items. As there are four of us in the race, I think he would
like to trim the field a bit and seek my endorsement if he can come
around to my way of thinking I just might do it. I am not sure he will
be able to as I am going to propose a 15% across the board cost of
living raise for our people. The closer you are to the classroom, the
better, but all ISD people are underpaid. I suspect you might
agree with me. I still sell a little life insurance and annuities now
and again. Just enough to keep the lights turned on and the cable
bill paid. Next week, I will work towards electricity and water,
then if I am lucky food comes up the following week. It is always
great to have a plan. This fall I will have two in college, so I am
looking over my kid's piggy banks real close. I might have to go
to the garage and find a hammer and liberate some of those coins!! UT
is one stingy place. Lauren has been offered only $2.000 from
them and four others school have offered her a full ride and two others
about 80% free. Guess where she wants to go? Yep, the one
who offers nothing. It is a good thing for her she has a mother
who is on her side, otherwise she would be at either SMU or LSU this
fall. But I still have hope in my heart, but know in my head
there is none. I gather from your note your health has improved, but
still not quite what you want it to be. If so, I am both
gladdened and saddened by this news. I am stuck the next four
weekends in Katy, but when I get free and head to San Antonio (only
$100 in gas) I will give you a shout and we can "do" lunch someplace.
In the meantime, stay dry, and out of trouble.” ---WOW! Now, that the way to update me on
your life, dude! That’s a lot of new, but you’re a busy guy. Best of
luck on the school board election. I know this is your second time
around. Sounds like your daughter has a great future ahead of her.
Thanks for staying in touch. (4/27/08)
HARRY LINDGREN ('70) San Antonio, Texas, recently had some
serious back surgery and is on the road to recovery. The one thing
shtta he's looking to doing when he's totally healed is to get back on
his Harley and hit the road. Our best wishes to Larry for a speedy
recovery (4/25/08)
CATHIE BOOTH (‘71) Metarie, Louisiana still sees so much
rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. She srites... “Hey Dennis, As always it is good to
hear from you and know that you are doing well. It is now almost
a year since my hubby crossed to the other side and I am doing well my
self. As for our daughter, Amber, is now an SA1C getting ready
for her nest stripe. She just completed the Airmen's Leadership
Class and did not loose any hair from that. LOL Louisiana
is still rebuilding slowly. Still so many homes are up in the air
sorta speak Here is to your continued healing and to your good health.
Love and Light.” ---Hey,
Cathie! Great to hear you're hanging in there in hurricane country. I
know that I am always amazed at news reports that show just how much
more work there is to be done in Louisiana. It's hard to still
comprehend the damages and loss. Thankyou for the well wishes that you
send my way and right back at ya! (4/20/08)
MARK NORMAN ('71) in Louisville, Kentucky has been very
busy in his life, lately. He writes...“Dennis, good to hear from you.
Since you’re asking for updates on people’s lives, well, here’s what
I’ve been up to. On the volunteer side, I’m still active in scouting,
presently serving as the Council Advancement Chairman. I’m also a
trustee at my daughter’s school. Finally, the National Model Railroad
Association elected me as Superintendent of the local division. (I told
them I wanted a recount. They just laughed.) August makes 36
years at UPS. That chapter will wrap up soon, as retirment is around
the corner. Our daughter Sophia is doing fine at school and is doing
excellent in her piano studies. As you know, she’s eight. Does anyone
else among the original Mustangs have a younger child? Evidently, I’m a
slow learner. My wife, Kelly is now teaching special education in
middle school. What an avocation. I admire her. Thanks for everything
you do to keep the flame alive Dennis. Best regards.” ---Thanks for the update, Mark, and after
careful thought, I think I can safely say that you DO have the youngest
child of any of the Original Mustangs! Nice achievement. LOL So,
you can see rerirement just areound the corner, well, my best wish for
good gealth to go along with it. Speaking of model trains, just last
year, my father gave me his collection of trains that he bought when I
was born. We got to see them at Christmas every year, but not play with
them. Now, after 50+ years, they're mine, and I haven't even taken them
out of the box, myself!! Thanks for writing. (4/20/08)
DEAN & SANDY (WOODS) DUNN
('69/'70) in North Richland
Hills, Texas was the first to reply to my e-mail. In fact, just minutes
after it was sent. Sandy wrutes for the both of them. DEan can't type
with a golf club in his hands! She writes... "Hey Dennis, Just wanted you to know I
always enjoy hearing from you and it's not been often enough lately,
I'm sure all would agree. I was just turning off the computer when I
heard your mail arrive. You were a bit evasive but hopes this finds you
well. Our little grandson, Ryan, just turned 7
and is starting baseball season with gusto of a little giant. Dean and
I just spent 9 days on Spring break with the grandkids and our
daughter & husband in Florida. Did the Disney & Sea World thing
and then 6 days (my favorite....on the beach) on Sanibel Island. The
boys wore us out, bike riding daily, Dean the guys golfed and we just
goofed off making sand castles, gathering sea shells and playing beach
bum. You mentioned how you enjoy hearing from the old JJ
folks.....and old we
are getting. Dean and I will be maried "40" years
on Sept 29th.....YIKES!!!!! . My cousin Rick Kieffer (‘72) will be in San Antonio the end of
the month, but I doubt we'll be down. Keep in touch ." ---Sandy.
somehow I knew you'd be among the first to reply to my e-mail. I can
always count on you
to stay in touch with me. I love getting your e-mails and hearing what
the "old man"(Dean) is up to and how you're doing. Me being evasive??
No way! LOL I just figured that people are tired of hearing about my
ailments and health situation, so I've stopped talking about it. It's
gotta' be borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring for people. Congratulations on your
upcoming 40th wedding anniversary. That is awesome!!! And the best part
of it is, after 40 years, the two of you are still talking to one
another!!! LOL Seriously, I'd be hard pressed to find someone as loving
and caring for each other, as the two of you. I think it's so wonderful
that the two of you have shared your lives this way for so long. You
two are living proof that "Love is all around." Sounds as if you and
Dean really enjoy being grandparents, too. That is so cool!! Glad to
hear Ryan is doing well. If, you make it to town for your cousin Rick's
visit, please, be sure to give me a call. It was great visiting with
your family last time and y'all really made me feel welcome. Love to
you and Dean! (4/20/08)
BETTY CONSANI ('70) San
Francisco, California was one of the first to reply to my recent bulk
e-mailo to everyone and she writes... "Dennis,
What a nice surprise to have a note from you in my email. I just
returned from Puerto Vallarta where my daughter Gretchen was married to
a wonderfl young man, Justin, last Saturday. The past 10 days
have been a whirlwind but very fun. AND I am exhausted ! The
wedding was extremely fun. The wedding planner and photographer
were on Mexican time so things got a bit garbled at times, but it all
worked out in the end. The weather was marvelous and the setting
magical. What more could we have asked for? Thank you for keeping
in touch. I appreciate it very much. I will write more
later." --- Betty it's always
great to hear from you. In fact, you have been one of the few folks
that have stayed in tiouched since the very beginning of this website
over 10 years ago. As I recently said about Richard Olsen ('69) it
applies to you and I-- it's great to make new friendships with old
friends. While I think you and I were "aware" of eah other back in
school, we didn't "pal" around, but over this past decade you and I
have shared some great e-mails and our friendship has grown. Thanks for
always staying in touch with me and keepinh us all up to date on your
life. My best wishes to your daughter. She makes a gorgeous bride!

JACKIE DAVIS ('71) San Antonio Texas, has moved back here
from Houston. She writes..."HI
Dennis! GREAT to get your base touch and your send to me too, class of
'71, Jackie Davis. NEWS FLASH! I'm once again a San Antonio
resident as of April 16th. After nearly 30 years of living in
Houston, I thought it would be a big deal to move back home, and yes,
it is in some respects to move further away from all the friends and
neighbors I've know here over the years, but it's also good to be back
home too. My mom is so over the moon that I've moved back nearer to
where she lives and that's the main reason I took this major step and
it's time. She'll probably live forever even though she's getting
up there, and certainly will even if she passes but I've missed her
smiles and person to person wisdom and look forward to being closer
than a 3 hr. drive. Really like my new neighbors, and just like when I
grew up in S.A., it still feels like home to me. Unpacking...now,
that's another thing. Best wishes to you and all and hey, keep on
keeping on, Dennis...take care, please do your best. After all,
you ARE the keeper of the first Mustang flame in many important ways
and not only are you appreciated, you're NEEDED and LOVED.
Whoohoo! Yeah!!! It's good to be back home!!!" ---Jackie, that's the most excited that
I've heard anyone being about moving back to San Antonio! You ought to
work for the Chamber of Commerce, girl! Let me be one of the first to
say, "Welcome home!" You mention your mom, as you can see from other
e-mails, a lot of classmates are facing important decisions about their
parents, as well. It's wonderful that you care enough to take take of
her. Some kids don't, these days. Again, glad to have you back in the
Alamo City and thank you for your kind words about me! (4/20/08)
FRED BUTLER ('70) Austin, Texas, got to wondering how I was
doing because he hadn't seen anything new on the website, lately, so he
gave me a call, last Tuesday (4/15/08) evening. I must admit that I
have been letting the website slide a bit. There's lots of reasons, but
I will be doing my best to get back into the swing of things. Fred is
enjoying his retirement from high school coaching and he's spending
most of his free time fishing and just chllin' out. Every time Fred and
I get to talking, the subject of playing wiffle ball in his backyard
with Mickey & Ricky Mahler, Paul Lindy and others, is always a fun
memory. Fred is making plans to come visit me one of these weekends
real soon. (4/18/08)
DARRELL McGIVERIN ('73) Dennis, this web site is so great!
It sounds like you haven't been
feeling well - hope you are recovering. I will be sending you a
contribution, this site is so well done great job!!! I attended JJ 1969
and 1970 and was actively
involved in band (trumpet) and I left JJ between my 9th and 10th
grade. My dad was transferred to the Philippines (actually there
were
several JJ kid that went to the PI - Cheryl Brandt, Laura Salter, Jovey
Massey). I had many friends in the district since I had went to
Lackland elementary and Sam Rayburn JH. I had never purchased a
yearbook so the ones posted on the site have been a real treat.
Obviously I didn't make it to picture day but I am in the band group
picture standing next to my best friend Tom Klimek. I have
attached a
current picture and am looking forward to contacting with some good ol'
friends. My business requires that I am in China often - this is a
picture from one of my recent trips. Thanks again for the hard work on
your wonderful website. I wish you well. Kind Regards.
Darrell- it's great to have you
back in the Mustang Corral after all these years. I hope old friends
will be in touch with you as they read this entry. I look forward to
meeting you one of these days. (4/18/08)

LAVERN SHIPMAN ('70) in Lubbock, Texas, gave ne a call
out of the blue, this past Friday night (4/11/08). You'll all remember
that Laverne was one of the original JJHS
cheerleaders back in 1967. She says she has such find memories of those
days and looks forward to attending SHINDIG
VII in 2010. She told
me that she got a surprise e-mail from VANCE VERBECK ('69)
who asked her if she remembered him. Well, of course she does, as she
does so many other people though it's been 40 years since she's been in
touch with most people. She welcomes e-mail from anyone who cares to
write and promises to respond. It's such a delight for me to talk with
her on the phone and I look forward to seeing her someday before the
next SHINDIG. (4/12/08)
MATT DELANEY ('70) Santa
Barbara, California, has dropped me an e-mail to let me know that he
won't be able to make his annual Spring visit to San Antonio, this
year. His mom moved out to California a year or two ago and she just
can't make the trip. From the tone of his e-mail, his biggest regret
about missing the trip is missing out on TEXAS BBQ in Luling! The heck with
missing friends, it's the BBQ he wants! I guess those hippies in
California can't do justice to a brisket! Hang in there, Matt, maybe
you can make it this summer! (4/12/08)
WALLY
MEEKS ('69) in San Antonio, Texas, had a recent
family loss in his life. His mother passed away back in March, if I
understand correctly. I only recently heard the news and apologize for
not being able to extend our sympathies sooner than now. On behalf of
all Mustang alumni, I do express or sorrow and prayers to Wally and his
family. (4/12/08)
JOY GRIFFIN ('71)
San Antonio, Texas, (no e-mail) continues to come over and visit with
me providing me aid, as I continue to recover. It's been 4 months since
I got out of the hospital and almost had my right foot amputated
because of an infection and complications from diabetes. Joy still
comes over to apply a prescribed lotion to my legs and to massage it to
get the circulation going. I have been on a cane for the past year and
I am resolved to the fact that I will be using it the rest of my days. In closing,
let me again thank Joy for everything. She is an amazing woman. (8/12/06)
MARCH 2008
Jeez,
this web page was down for three weeks and only ONE person noticed and
e-mailed me about it. Yikes! Does anyone visit this website anymore??
TONY PELLETIER ('71) in
Houston, Texas has checked in with me by
e-mail. He writes...
"Dennis, Sorry to hear that Hullabaloo I
will not be a reality this summer. I pray that your health
improves so you can again tackle these assignments that we know you
love. In the interim, I will contact Karl and see what he has planned
at Fredericksburg on the 4th of July. It sounds like fun.
This time I should be able to fly in. Attached are photos of the
aircraft we recently acquired for company business (and just a little
monkey business). I was between airplanes during last summer's
get-together (bummer) but was so impressed by the Hangar Hotel complex
and the Fredericksburg airport that we have since flown back several
times, just for the day. Great Place!! Hope to see some fellow
Jay alumni at the event. Aerial tours of the Hill Country will be
available. No acrobatics though - you'll have to check in with
Karl's former
combat aviator buddies for that mission. "
"FYI - In Mid-April, I will
once again tackle the annual MS 150 Bike Ride from Houston to
Austin. The organizers lie about the distance - it's actually 165
miles (2 full days on a bicycle). I have been training hard since
November and feel pretty good.
This will be my third time to complete the trek. In previous
years, I have donated all funds received in memory of Clair Neyland
who, as you know, was a victim of this insidious disease and will do so
again this year. Last year,
the Houston riders who tackled this trek raised almost $9 Million for
the National MS Society. I am honored just to do my small part."
"Dennis - please know
that you
are in a lot of people's prayers. Hope
you're feeling good enough to
make the event. Stay in the fight!!
Also, let George Hunter and the rest of Jay alumni who are still in
harm's way around the globe know that they continue to be in our prayers as
well. My son, Trent, graduated from Marine Officer Candidate School in
Quantico, VA last summer and will accept his commission as an Officer
in the Marine Corps upon graduation from A&M in May. Like
many
families, we are acutelyaware of the sacrifices being made by the
incredible men and women in our Armed Forces. Tony P."
Tony, thanks for the
e-mail. Sounds like great things are happening for you. Thanks for
sending the photos of your airplane. It looks great! Yes, I encourage
everyone to look into the JULY 4th activities that Karl Ritter ('71) is
planning in Fredericksburg. As for myself, well, I'll have to bow out
of summer activities, as my legs just can't get me around like that
anymore. Heck, if I knew pasta and pizza was gonna' get me this way,
I'd have never started work at "Harold's Pizza" 40 years ago! LOL I
know my health problems are a result of my own lifeling mistakes and
there's no one to blame but myself for the troubles I have now. Old
habits (compulsive/emotional eating) are hard to break. But, I have no
more or less important things to deal with in my life than anyone else.
Thanks for your concern. And, again, great to hear from you! (3/4/08)

FEBRUARY 2008
LARRY GLISSON ('69) in
San Antonio, Texas,
is one of those classmates that we have lost touch with, over the year,
yet he's right here in our backyard. You may recall that Larry was in a
rock band called "Orange Orange",
which I beleive JOHN CAMPBELL ('69)
and TOMMY
BEALE ('69) were also in. You will note that Larry's name at the
beginning of this article does not have a "blue e-mail line" under it.
I don't have an e-mail address or link for Larry, but his sister CHARLOTTE GLISSON ('70) sent
me a link to an mp3 music file
of a performnce of Larry's at the Blue Cactus Cafe, located in the
former Wetmore General Store and Post
Office on the outskirts of San Antonio. Check out the site and
Larry's music. (2/16/08)
BRUCE HICKS ('69) in
Pasadena, Texas Back in the "mustang corral after 40 years! He
writes...
"Hello Dennis, Don't
really know how I found your website, except, for some reason
last night I thought about John Jay for the first time in I don't know
how many years so I searched for it and one of the results was your
site. Being that your site is about the time I was and should
have
been there, I just checked it out and was very impressed that this
was
there and you do this. I haven't even really begun to totally
check it
out but am amazed at the amount I waded through last night and then
again this afternoon. (I'm on dial up, so it's slow loading the
Shindig pictures and the yearbook pictures and pages as you would
know) I figure I'll get through much of it in the next few days
and
weeks. You ask what I've been up to. Where does one start when I
left SA in
July of '68? Hard to believe almost 40 years! Anyway we
went to
Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. where I graduated in '69. I then
went to
UT in Austin until 1975. I got an Engineering degree in
'74. Came to
the Houston area in '76 and been here ever since. I worked 24
years
for the City of Houston and retired in 2002.
I married a German woman in 1981 and
we have 3 children, but divorced
in 1992 and she and my kids have since lived in Germany. We all
have a
good relationship and talk every couple of weeks.
I've visited
them there about 8 or so times since they've lived there. I
remarried
in 2002 shortly before I retired. My current wife has 2 kids and
2
granddaughters that we take care of alot. My current wife retired
from
the City of Houston also at the same time. We live in Pasadena,
but
have considered moving to the SA area within the next 2 or 3
years.
One of my brothers lives there as well as my step sister and her
family, and a nephew and his wife are moving there this summer and my
sister as soon as she sells her house in Houston after she retires in
June.
I don't know if we knew each other
"back then" but I was there. We had
come there from Hickam AFB in Hawaii in '66, and I went to Holmes my
sophomore year where my sister graduated in '67. I then was a
junior
at Jay that first year and somehow was elected Junior Class
President.
At Jay that year, I hung with (Crockett) Ryan Smith ('69), Don Sparks
('69), Ron Sparks ('69), the Stephens' twins (who of course you know),
and my girlfriend at the time, Kathy Stephens (no relation to Donna and
Monna except friends). I don't know if you knew Kathy, but she
was in
the class of '70 but left around Thanksgiving '68 for Georgia when her
parents split up. Looking at the Senior pictures and yearbook pages I
find I actually
remember many of the folks in all three of the classes at Jay in
'67-'68; no details, I just recall the faces usually. Well, I'll keep
checking your site for the latest news and hope to be
able to attend the next reunion and maybe rekindle some old friendships.
" -
--Bruce, It's great to have you back with
the Mustangs and we all look forward to seeing you at the next reunion,
whenever that may be! (2/16/08)
MICKEY MAHLER ('70),
the FIRST genuine sports star
for JJHS, recently got
together with three other noted athletes that went to Jay at the same
time he did and took this photo to save the moment. In the photo (shown
standing left to right) JERRY POSTON ('71), BILLY SMITH ('71)
and JIMMY KIDDER ('71).
They all got together for a visit in Utah.
Mickey (Jay baseball), is
a mortgage banker in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jerry (Jay basketball) owns and
operates a horsebreeding farm in Texas with his wife, another Jay
graduate, BRENDA MADDOX ('71). Billy (Jay baseball) played in the
World Series with the Baltimore Orioles, and owns a roofing business in
Dallas. Jimmy is successful in
the nightclub business, with a club here in San Antonio and one just
opening up in Dallas.
It's great to see these guys have all stayed in shape over the years.
By the way, if I got any of the above information wrong, please e-mail
me and give me the correct info. Oh, I'll try to get a hold of Jimmy
and see if we can plan something at his San Antonio club this summer.

BETTY CONSANI ('70) in
California is making plans for her daughter's wedding. She writes...
"We're
pretty busy right now getting ready for my daughter's wedding on April
12 in Puerto Vallarta. We will be gathering at Casa Valerie
(
www.casavalerie.com)
with over 100 people for the
wedding. The villa is owned by my daughter's fiance's aunt
and she fell in love with it when she was visiting PV and his
auntie. All four of my children and their families, my ex hubby
and his wife and my soon to be son in law's parents are staying at the
villa. My hubby and I are staying about 5 minutes away
in a 3 bedroom 3 bath house w/ pool that we rented
for the week of the festivities.... my ex and I get along
very well...so there will be no hard feelers about whom is staying at
the villa and who isn't....my mom and brother will be sharing the house
with us...and my sister and her family from D.C. are staying in the
house next door. Thanks for setting up the BLOG, I think
it will be a fun thing."
---Betty, it's always good to hear from you and send my congratulations
to your daughter. And have a blast!! (2/2/08)
BARRY DOUTHAT isn't a Mustang but graduated
from Southwest High School. He knew a lot of y'all and found my
website. He writes, "Dennis:
I did not go to Jay but had many friends there (Harry Lindgren, Kay
Fisher, Pat Handyside, and many more). I went to Southwest
H.S. I just wanted to let you know what an absolutely fantastic
job you have done with the Jay website(s). I only wish someone
from Southwest had the time and talent (I don't unfortunately, talent I
mean) to do what you have done. You can be very proud. You
have given your classmates something that money cannot buy:
memories. Memories after all are what make life tolerable (I
heard that in a movie recently and boy does it fit). Keep up the
great work. I have spent numerous hours going through the
sites. Can't tell you how many times a smile has been brought to
my face. With best regards, Barry Douthat, Monroe, North
Carolina. A Dragon, but a friend to them 'stangs." ---
Barry, it's good to hear from you and I hope many of your old Mustang
friends see this entry and contact you. That would be cool. (2/1/08)
JANUARY 2008
GEORGE HUNTER
('70), deep in
the sand jungles of the Middle East theatre of war, sent me this
e-mail... "< style="color: rgb(0,
0, 0);">
Dennis,
Ol' Buddy (with a Capital "B")....
you are and continue to brighten our days with your writings.. Thank
you, again,..and I will find some time to donate to the website cause.
I just want to tell you that you
have done an excellent job of maintaning the list of our fallen
comrades and alumni. Thank you for letting us know when a classmate has
sadly passed away. I just want to express my
gratitude for your efforts, which are indeed .... a Marvel!!! Thank you
so much from the bottom of my heart. The battle continues, here, in
the Middle East. We will not let these folks down. I only hope that the
new Presidency does not tarnish our past efforts. Keep praying for us
all." (1/10/08)
RICK MOYER ('74), here in San Antonio, is trying
to round up former JJHS band DRUMMERS for a musical project in
June/July. Here the information sent to me...
"This is an early weigh-in of interest
for gathering old drummers from John Jay to pick up the sticks again,
and record whatever happens when the party breaks out. If you are: a
John Jay Drummer, related to a John Jay Drummer, married to a John Jay
Drummer (sorry about that - except Hal, of course), know any John Jay
Drum Cadences, are a Drummer of any origin, or in any way are possibly
able to forward this to one; let me know what you think. Rick
Moyer (210) 653-5753."
LAVERNE SHIPMAN ('70) HAS
BEEN FOUND AND SHE'S ALIVE & WELL IN
LUBBOCK, TEXAS!!
Lavern Shipman, one of
the ORIGINAL MUSTANG CHEERLEADERS,
called me tonight!!! We have not seen one another since graduation in
1970. About four years ago, our paths crossed over the internet, but
somehow we lost touch with each other. She was living in Big Spring,
Texas, at the time we made contact with one another. Then, she was
changing jobs and supposed to be moving to Brackenridge, Texas. Well,
it turns out that her career took her to New Mexico for a couple of
years. She recently moved back to Texas and lives in Lubbock, where she
works in the payroll department at Texas Tech University. A lady came
into her office and they started talking and one thing led to the other
and it turns out the lady was a JJHS graduaite. On top of that, she
knew all about my website and told Laverne about it. Laverne got my
e-mail address and wrote to me. Then, as earlier stated, she called me
and we chatted for 45 minutes and she is determined to make it to SHINDIG VII in July 2010. She did
not know that CLAIR
NEYLAND ('70), a fellow original cheerleader at Jay, had passed
away a couple of years ago. She was very saddened hearing that news.
Laverne looks forward to reconnecting with her John Jay HS friends.
Anyone that would like to drop her an e-mail can do so by clicking on
her underlined name at the start of this article. It's great to have
her back in the Mustang Corral. (1/2/08)
GEORGE MONK ('71) in Salt Lake City, Utah, is the first
former classmate to call me on New Year's Day. George just had knee
replacement surgery and is coming back here to San Antonio to
recuperate. His parents still live here and they have given him some
property and a cabin on Medina Lake. George will arrive back here in
the Alamo city this Friday (1/4/08) and spend the next 30 days relaxing
and healing up. Hmmmm, I might have to make a trip to see him at the
lake. I haven't been fishimg in over 35+ years! I'd love to oil up my
Zebco rod & reel and give it a try. Call me when the fishing is
good, George. (1/1/08)
CINDY HOWELL ('71)
in Yorba Linda, California, sent me the last e-mail of 2007 and she
writes... "Hi
Dennis, I wish you a Happy New Year! I wish I could say my
Christmas
and New Year’s was festive, but it hasn’t been. My mother, Joyce
Howell, had a Granmal seizure and stroke on Christmas Eve.
Luckily, I
was in Sacramento, where my parents live, for Christmas. She was
in
intensive care until today, when she was transferred to a skilled
nursing facility for care and recovery. I hope she will be able
to go
home in the near future, but she will need home hospice care for a long
time until she can function on her own. She is 79 and my dad,
Charles
Howell, is 85 years old. It sucks growing old for them, but my
sister
(Vicki Howell) and I will be there for them. Vicki flew to
Sacramento
from Topeka, Kansas with her husband Wayne Potter on Christmas
day.
Vicki will stay with dad indefinitely until mom goes home and
arrangements are made for home care. I hope and pray that 2008 is
better than 2007 for you! Take care of yourself – speaking from
one
diabetic to another. I will try to keep you posted on mom’s
progress.
Love and peace in 2008!" ---Cindy,
I always enjoy hearing from you, but sorry to hear of your mom's
illness. I am adding her to my prayers, as I know your oher classmates
will. I guess we're all at that age where we start becoming the
caregivers for our parents. My dad is 75 and my mom will be 75 in
February. It's strange to imagine I'll be taking care of them someday,
as they both have been taking care of my in my recent illmess. Such is
life. Ob-la-di ob-la-da (1/1/08)
JOY GRIFFIN
MARTINEZ...An angel sent to help me recover.
JOY GRIFFIN ('71) [does
not have e-mail], here in San Antonio, has been so remarkable to me
this past month. Joy and I have always known one another but mainly
just a slight aquaintence. She has been my sister, Linda's, good friend
for 40 years or so. I mean to say that Joy and I knew one another in
school, but just basically because she was such good friends with my
sister, over the years. Frankly, she was such a hottie, back in school,
guys like me didn't stand a chance with her,but we could dream! LOL I
(and dozens of other guys) have always held this beautiful lady on
apedestal. Beside her loveliness, Joy has a kick-ass sense of humor!
Geez, I love hearing her laugh and boy can she tell some funny stories.
As if all of that wasn't enough, Joy was into CARS & RACING. What
more could a guy ask for in a girl. I'd talk to Joy sometimes when
she'd come
over to our family house hanging out with Linda. We'd say, "Hi" and
that's about it. Like I said, she was Linda's buddy, and I was just
Linda's brother. .........
Well, flash forward from the 1970s to
December 2007, and Joy was one of the first people to come visit me in
the hospital recently and when she did so, she spent two hours giving
me a face/neck/back massage while I laid in my hospital bed. At the
time, some
other classmates SUE WEBBER ('72),
MIKE JONES ('71)
and my sister, Linda, are also
in the room visiting me. We chatted
about all sorts of stuff and had some laughs. Joy has stopped by my house, on
occasion, to massage my leg to get the
circulation going. I am still
in
a great deal of pain, but Joy has made it so much easier to bear.
God bless Joy for being here for me. (1/1/08)

SPEAKING OF
BEING THERE FOR ME... my
appreciation to all my
MUSTANG buddies who continue to be in touch with me with their
encouragement by phone calls, letters, e-mails and visits to my home.
God bless each of you!!
MIKE GRINFIELD ('70)
in San Antonio, Texas has been a good buddy to me during my
recent health issues. Now, he is facing one of his own. Last Thursday,
(12/28/07) he had eye surgery to remove cataracts. In about three weeks
he'll have surgery on his other eye to removed more. All our best
to Mike for a quick recovery and retun to healthy vision.
(1/1/08)
RICHARD BRATZ ('70) in
Apple Valley, California, called me on New Year's Eve to give me good
wishes for 2008. Unfortunately, he also had some sad news. His mom,
Audrey Nichols, passed away on December 30th. She was living in
Stockdale, Texas with Richard's sister. It's a rough time of year to
have something like this. Richard, please know that we send our
condolences and prayers to you and your family in your time of loss.
God bless you.
(1/1/08)
RENITA FOSTER ('71) in
Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, is proud to announce her son's graduation
from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, Texas this past
December. He is planning a career in law enforcement in Texas.
Pictured at the right are: Carl
(Renita's husband); their daughter Sherry,
son Brad and Renita.
Sherry has recently passed exams to enter law school. She hopes to go
to Columbia University, but Renita wants her to attend St. Mary's Law
School right here in San Antonio, so the family can move back to Texas.
Renita, a retired colonel from the U.S. Army, continues to write
articles for military publications. (1/1/08)

LEONARD SAAVEDRA ('70) in
Mesa, Arizona sent in a recent photo of himself and his lovely wife,
Dawn. Sitting next to a warm fire, they fight off the chill of another
lousy football season for the NFL Cardinals and the NBA Phoenix Suns.
Geez, the SPURS kick the SUN's keesters at every turn! Just kidding!!
Heck, that recent victory of the #19 University of Texas, over #12
Arizona State (52-34) has got to chap Leonard's ass! (LOL)
Sawb still flies with Southwest Airlines and Leonard is in the reatils
business having sold his interest in the Legends 8 stores that he
helped to establish.
Leonard has stayed in close touch with me these many years and makes it
a point to stop by and see me when he's in town. If he doesn't travel
here, I can always be sure he'll check in with me at least twice a year
with a phone call. (1/1/08)
