MICHAEL PRICE ('71) [E]
has joined us by visiting this website
and he e-mails me... "Hey there Dennis... I just received your
newsletter at my parents house in Arkansas where most of my mail goes
while
I'm on the road. I'm working for a company which sub-contracts
technicians
to companies that own large tents and structures (permanent and
semi-permanent)
for set-up and tear down. Most of the tents are used at events like PGA
Tournaments (we did the Texas Open), SEC games, car races and
conventions.
The permanent structures are very large fabric covered steel frames. I
just returned from Philly, Pa and will be headin' for Tucson, Az in
January....a
real road dog. Anyway, I took a look at your website and I must say
you've
done a kick-ass job of keepin' the homefires burning. Seeing some of
the
old photos of people we went to school with was enough to really make
me
sit back and wonder where the years went and then seeing some of the
more
recent ones ('specially Karin Walters..you thought you were the
only one who had eyes for that lady???..in praise of older
women!!!)
I know where the years went and not to waste either. I'm going to try
and
make it to the reunion if my job schedule permits. I would really like
to see the folks from our era. Take care...Mike" ---Well, Mike
it's outstanding to hear from you for the first time in 30 years!
Sounds
like you really enjoy your work and get to see a lot of the nation. So,
Karin's photo sent chills up your spine, huh? Well, take a place at the
end ofthe line, ol' buddy! Yeee haaa! Karin has been a blast to get to
know all over again, and has sent in some great photo to post on this
site.
Hope to see you at the reunion, my friend. (12/29/99)
ROBERT DUPRIEST ('75) [E] is my youngest brother. People say that he and I look the most alike in the family. That's why Bob won't give me a picture of himself to post here on the site! I spent all day December 23rd, at their new home in Spring Branch, TX. They have 25 acres of property there and a magnificent house with swimming pool. Heck, Bob even has a sauna room right off his bedroom! He is the national sales manager of a company that produces and sells those satellite tracking devices that you can have installed in your vehicle and if the vehcile is stolen the company can pinpoint exactly where in the world it is, call the police, electronically turn your car off when the cops are near it and capture the crooks! His wife, Maricela is a social worker/counselor with several military school districts in San Antonio. Anyway, since I don't have a photo of him, I have one of his kids (my nieces and nephews). (12/25/99)
CATHY BACON ('70) [E] is up for a promotion to full Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. She should hear something this spring, so everyone keep their fingers crossed and say a prayer. The hardworking lady deserves the promotion! She is presently assigned to the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Her tour of duty there is about half-over and she doesn't know if she will be transfered or given an extension at the Pentagon. She says she would like to stay in the Virginia area. (12/25/99)

Cathy Bacon's mom and dad strike the classic "American Gothic"
pose in front of their home in Virginia.
WILLENA THETFORD ('70) has sorta dropped off the face of the earth, or at least the face of Ohio. I need to get in touch with her, ASAP. If anyone knows her address or has a phone number, please contact me (Dennis) right away. (12/24/99)
STEVE MAYS ('70) [E] and his wife, Barbara, sent in a photo Christmas card of their triplets along with a super generous donation to cover the costs of this website and the continued production of the twice-a-year newsletter. Thanks for your generosity, Steve! And now, let's look at how the kids have grown... (12/24/99)

Steve writes on the back of the card... "Dennis-- Merry Christmas!
I hope this finds you well. This is a photo of our triplets (left to
right)
Ryan, Jessica, and Brooks. They obviously got their cuteness from their
mother! Lord knows it wasn't me! They just turned 3 this past November.
What a trip!" ---Steve, the kids are beautiful! I'd say that
Brooks looks most like you! Christmas morning must be a blast at your
house!
Happy Holidays!
MARSHA DAVID ('71) [E] sent me a beautiful Christmas card photo of her family. They live in Englewood, Florida and have a beautiful big boat that the love to go fishing around the Florida Keys. Here they are... (12/24/99)
Here's Marsha's family, (from left to right), husband- Bill,
daughter-
Mackenze, Marsha, and son- Wes. You can see a glimpse of their awesome
boat in the background. I had to clip the photo when I scanned it, but
it's a beauty! And speaking of BEAUTYS! Marsha, you have not aged a
single
day since graduation, wow!!
PAM CHABAK ('70) sent in a very generous donation to keep the newsletter and website going. Thanks, Pam! I appreciate it so very, very much! Be sure to save me a slow dance at the reunion! (12/24/99)
WALLY WIBLE ('70) and his wife, Jenny sent in a Christmas card with a note saying they just bought a ROLLS ROYCE and can't wait for the reunion! Wow! (12/24/99)
PAULA SCOFIELD ('71) [E] sent in a donation to "the cause" and we appreciate that very much! (12/24/99)
LINDA HARP ('70) [E] sent me an e-mail with an update on her life. She now works for the Alaska Department of Public Safety and has other great news to share..."Hi there, Dennis, I got the last newletter you sent a few days ago and caught up on all the news. Just wanted to send a little note and let you know that I won't be able to make the reunion. However, we are making a trip down next sometime next fall. I haven't been home in over 2 years and I need to see my family. I hope while we are there we can get together for a drink or something. I haven't set an exact date yet but will let you know as the time gets closer. It sounds like you are knocking yourself out, as usual, and I'm sure the reunion will be a big hit. I have had some changes of late. I got married November 5. My married name is Jennings. My son Jason and his wife are expecting a baby boy in March, making me a grandmother for the second time. Shannon and his wife have a 2 1/2 year old son. Life is good. I am now working for the Alaska Department of Public Safety. No, I am definitely not a state trooper! However, I do work for the DPS in the capacity of a supervisor for the Records and Identification department. My department archives operator license photos and criminal history documents. We also provide photo line-ups for criminal justice agencies, update criminal history records and provide background checks for individuals. I was hired as a supervisor to digitally image the criminal history docs. I was ground floor on the project and it has been very interesting. Until March of last year all the documents had been microfilmed. I do like my job, but am considering a move in the near future to join a department with more opportunity for personal growth (upward mobility)! My boss is great so I'm not in a big hurry to move. Well, I hope this note finds you happy, heathy and in good spirit for the holiday season. Best Wishes, Linda" ---Congratulations on your marriage, Linda! I wish you both a world of happiness. It's good to hear from you and we're gonna' miss you at the reunion. Be sure to come see me when you're in town! And if you hear of any criminal POLAR BEARS headed our way from Alaska, you just send me the DPS bulletin and I'll be sure to post it here in the site! Think I'll start calling you: JOE FRIDAY. What a hoot! Love you! (12/22/99).
MR. GEORGE BRITTON is the last remaining ORIGINAL TEACHER at John Jay High School. He has been teaching math there since the doors first opened in 1967. I saw him at my car mechanics shop (Westlakes Automotive) directly across from the school. He was getting his car serviced there, as well. Mr. Britton hasn't changed a bit. He still live on Hobble Drive in the old neighborhood. He said that he's finally thinking about retiring from teaching in a year or two. For 33 years, he's been at Jay and has seen the school go through some rough times, but John Jay always comes through. Mr. Britton sent me a donation for this website and newsletter, as he does each year. (12/22/99)
BRADLEY SIMON ('70) isn't one for too many words, as I've said before. Once again, he has sent in his annual contribution to the newsletter and website. No note, no letter, just his check. Brad's a quiet guy, but his annual donation speaks volumes about his charity. Thanks Brad! (12/20/99).
DONNA STEVENS ('71) [E] gave me a call today, right out of the blue. I haven't talked to her in about a year. She tells me that she's doing great and that her son just turned 21. Wow, how times flies. Donna has been working at the Nix Hospital, in downtown San Antonio, for many years and expects to retire from there someday. She really enjoys her work. She says she'll definately be at the reunion next July. Can't wait to see ya' babe! (12/20/99).
LAVERNE SHIPMAN ('70) and I have become close friends over the past few years. She calls me every now and then from her home in Big Springs, Texas. About two years ago, she sent me a photo of herself and I had misplaced it. Well, today, I was cleaning the living room and found the photo of Laverne, so I thought I'd share it with everyone. Laverne had told me she was thinking of moving to Austin, but I haven't heard from her for a few months. (12/19/99)
Laverne Shipman sent me this photo back in 1998 and she looks as
lovely as ever! You'll recall that Laverne was one of the original John
Jay Cheerleaders. Can you name the others? I think ... SHIRLEY
ENGLISH ('70), MIMI VERBOIS ('69), DEBBIE VAN PELT ('69) (Head
Cheerleader) and JANE DAWSON ('69).
Can anyone tell me if that's correct?
KATHY KISLING ('70) [E] and I have spoken to each other exactly ONE TIME in 30 years. I think it was to see if she could make it to our 20 year reunion back in 1990. It was a brief phone call, although we did share some great memories about the plays we were in together back at John Jay. In particular, a play called "Bus Stop." I played the lead character "Bo Decker" and Kathy played the owner of the cafe in which the play takes place. Well, lo' and behold, tonight, I get an e-mail and it opens with the words: "Hello, Bo Decker!" So, I knew it was from someone from drama class days at Jay. Then I looked to see who sent it and saw "Kathy" and knew it was Kathy Kisling! Well, here's here e-mail..."Hi, Dennis -- This is Kathy Durant, aka Kathy Kisling ('70). Now that seems like the past to me! Thanks for all you've done to keep everyone in touch, or at least posted. I FINALLY logged on to the website, and I can't imagine why I have not done so before. You have done a great job. What inspired me was the class mailing that came today. Here's the scene: I'm in the kitchen putting cookies in the oven, getting ready for my two eldest sons to come home from college tomorrow, and opening my mail. All at the same time. I read the mailing, and I think, "I need to go to this reunion". Then I think about convincing my very-good-sport spouse to come with me. Then I realize that my sister, KAREN KISLING ('72) would actually ENJOY it. It took me about five seconds to convince her that we ought to do this. So we're going to make significant efforts to make it happen. I hope everything works out. I'm still here in Maryland, in a semi-rural area north of D.C. and west of Baltimore. Still very happily married to Dave Durant, my college classmate. He's a Presbyterian (PCA) minister, having made a career change a few years ago. Our sons are David, 21, a senior at Virginia Tech, Christopher, 18, a freshman at William and Mary, and Jonathan, 15, a sophomore in high school. I teach part-time at a local private school, and I'm seriously back into music, playing hammered dulcimer. I guess that covers the standard stuff. It's great to hear about everyone. Thanks so much, Dennis. Love, Kathy" ---Well, Kathy, it's great to have you back with us and it's gonna be a blast to see you at the reunion!! Please be sure to stay in touch. This whole thing is getting to be so cool!! (12/16/99)
TOM SMITH ('69) [E] recently visited this website for the first time and writes..."Dear Dennis, Sorry that I'll probably miss the big reunion event, but I sure enjoyed the trip down memory lane on the website and in the newsletter. There's so many names that make me recall what a NERD, I was. I saw MASON WRIGHT ('70) in San Diego, in 1972, ithink it was. Tell him I got a FXSTC in '95. Also would like to hear from the Maestas brothers. I talked to JANE SEABOLT ('69) recently and she's doing very well. I'm still turning wrenches on corporate jets for wealthy folks. Hope to retire to Kerrville in a couple of years." ---Well, Tom, I'm glad you enjoy this website and perhaps things will change and you'll be able to make the reunion. We'll keep you posted! (12/16/99)
THOMAS DUPRIEST ('73) [E] is one of my brothers. My youngest brother is ROBERT ('75). Well, Tom sent me a photo Christmas card and since I never write anything about Tom, I thought I'd just share the photo with you all. (12/15/99)
(Left to right) My brother TOM
DUPRIEST
('73), daughter, JENNIFER, who is a
Junior
at Hondo High School, their son, CLINT, a Freshman at a computer tech
college
up in Waco, and , SUSAN (THOMPSON)
DUPRIEST
('75). You may remember Susan's sister, JANIE
THOMPSON ('73), a cheerleader at Jay. (I think I got the years
right!)
They live in Mico, Texas near Medina Lake. Tom and the whole family
hand-built
their two homes! Yep, Tom just completed building his second home about
10 yards from his first one, which he has converted into an office.
They
have about 75 acres of land and have some cattle on it. It's a great
place
to go hunting for arrow and spear heads! Tom is a computer programmer
and
Susan works at a bank in Hondo.
BEVERLEE BRIGHAM ('71) [E] has been enjoying my class newsletter for years and now she's a fan of this website! First, I want to thank Bev, for her wonderful donation to "the cause." Her generosity puts her on the same scale as SANTA CLAUS! Thanks, Bev!! I just got off the phone with her to thank her for the check and we must have talked for 45 minutes and had some great laughs and shared some wonderful memories. Her husband is Dr. Martin Smith, a plastic surgeon who operates out of Methodist hospital. (Any ladies need a tummy tuck, let me know and I'll get ya' a good rate!) Bev says she spent four hours on this website and still didn't get to see everything. Here's what she had to say in her first e-mail to me... "Hi, Dennis! Just got the reunion letter and wanted to write and tell you how much I enjoyed it ! You really did a great job putting it together! I just realized the funniest thing ... I've known DON ELDER ('70) for quite a few years - and never realized he went to Jay.. and I'm sure he didn't realize I did either ! I met him at the Methodist EP lab while I was working as a cardiac pacemaker rep . I remember him telling me he was looking for his biological family but we never talked about high school ! I'm retired form being a rep, but my husband still operates at Methodist so I will have him look up Don to say hi from me. Have you heard from LAURA RUEB ('71) or DEBBIE GLOD ( '71)? Debbie is married to JOE GLOD ('69). Great to hear from you!" ---Well, Bev is gonna work up a little bio on herself for me, so I can post it here and see what she's been up to for the past 30 years. If anyone has any info on Laura Rueb or Debbie Glod, please let me know. (12/15/99)
DANNY PADRON ('69) [E] has finally lost his mental prowess. He has dropped his guard. Danny (or probably his lovely wife, Cindee) sent me a photo Christmas card. And you all know what happens when someone send me a photograph! So here goes!
Merry Christmas to everyone from Danny Padron and family. From left
to right, Andrew (a student at Clark High School), Cindee (a teacher
with
Northside ISD) and, of course, Coach Danny, who teaches and coaches at
Clark High School in San Antonio. That's Danny's best attempt at a
smile.
He wears his underwear too tight!
DOUG CRAWFORD ('70) [E] dropped me a line by e-mail..."Hey Dennis, I got your newsletter. Great as usual. I don't know how you even keep up with all of us clowns. On your missing persons list you have a Roland D. Crawford that is probably me since there was no Roland only a Ronald. And while I may be very confused at times, I am not lost at least not totally. Just a note you may want to pass along -----My parents received a Christmas card from Joe and Carmel Crews in Panama City Florida. Their son Joey went to school with some of us at the old Westwood Terrace Elementary school and I think was in the 7th grade with us at Rayburn. About that time his dad was transferred to Panama City and subsequently retired there. Joey and I stayed in touch for a number of years but kinda last contact in the last few. They were charter members at Lackland Baptist church and were real active for many years. In a short note to my parents his mom related that Joey was killed by a drunk driver while turning into the driveway at his home after work one night. Ironically this tragic loss occurred on my birthday, April 22. I have many fond memories of Joey and his family and my heart is heavy for this untimely loss. Remember his wife and children, mom,dad and sister Marilyn in your prayers, as the case has not yet gone to trial and till it does there can be no hope of peace. Thanks for everything and have a Merry Christmas, I love you man!!!!!" ---Doug it is always so great to hear from you. Sorry about the death of your friend. Please know that he and his family are in our prayers. And I love you, too, man!! Merry Christmas! (1215/99)
CATHIE BOOTH ('70) [E] sent me an e-mail and always has interesting things to tell me... "Dear Dennis, Glad to get this latest newsletter! We have had a full year, here. I went to New York for the first time to help teach a hair growing class. While I was there, my little brother introduced me to my first gay bar. We have visited Balmorhea, Texas for possible relocation from here in Louisianna. We also went to Sun Dance up in Montana in July. My husband had a right nephrectomy (the removal of the right kidney) for cancer. They found the cancer by a fluke and early enough that he will not have to do radiation or chemo. He busted his operation site open just two weeks after surgery, but it has just closed up. All he wants for Christmas is a shower! LOL Our daughter will graduate from high school in the year 2000. My massage business is doing well. Thanks for keeping all of us updated, Dennis. Love to you!" ---Cathie, thanks for the update! Boy, you sure to get the interesting stuff in life! LOL (12/15/99)
KARIN WALTERS ('69) [E] does it again! Get a load of the latest picture she sent to me! This one is a hoot!

Karin says: "Hi Dennis, I think I found another winner! I
believe
this to be RICHARD OLSEN ('70) and
myself in approximately 1968 or 1969. I don't recall the circumstances,
the events, or even the place....except we were crammed in one of those
little photo booths. There's no telling ANYTHING about the expressions
caught by the camera?????!!!??? Is that awestruck, dumfoundedness or
pain?
Perhaps, he can fill us in."
Dennis says: Well,
let's see. Judging by the look of surprise on Richard's face, and the
fact
that I cannot see your other hand, Karin, I think you were about ready
to whisper in his ear: "Richard, turn your head and cough!"
DENNIS DUPRIEST ('70) [E] This is gonna sound crazy, but what the hell, my whole life is crazy. This past Monday night, my pet cockatiel died. I bought her at Christmas in 1979 and had her for 20 years. I never named her, just called her, "Bird." I figured she knew her own name and who was I to go and change it. KATHY O'DAY ('70) used to come visit me and then tease me that I never named the bird because I was afraid of committment. I used to make the bird a piece of buttered toast every morning. Funny how you can get attached to a pet in 20 years. Just thought I'd mention it. I'm gonna miss her a lot. (12/9/99)
JON DAVIS ('70) [E] checks in with me by e-mail every now and then, and today he wrote... "Dear Dennis, You should receive a contribution check today or tomorrow and a note indicating I have made my reservation for the reunion! I have been actively tradin stocks, recently, and, now, I can not only send contributions, but I can also afford to send them! It's been a great way of life for me to produce my won income, thus far, and I hope it continues, so I can squeeze in some more donations to "the cause" before the reunion. This has been a tremendous turn around for me, since my two other businesses went flat. RANDY TILLMAN ('70) stays in touch with me regularly, most with e-mail jokes. I hope to be able to visit PAUL SCOTT ('70) in Santa Monica, California. I am looking forward to staying with my sister in San Antonio when I come down for the reunion. I gave this website a plug by registering at "classmates.com". Dennis, I never tire of honoring the role you play in doing all of this. Hope that all is well for you and will see you this summer!" ---Well, Jon, it is always great to hear from you way out in Eugene, Oregon. Thank you for the kind words of praise. You have always been a regular supporter of the newsletter and website even when things were tight for you in between jobs. I cannot tell you how much your donations have meant to all of us, Jon. Thank you for your continued generosity, my friend, and best of luck in the new career. (12/8/99)
PAUL BROUSSARD ('69) [E] has joined us on the internet! Now, if his last name "Broussard" doesn't ring a bell, perhaps you best remember him as PAUL WILKINSON. When he and his brother, BOB WILKINSON ('70) came of legal age, they both decided to change their names back to their original names, as their mom had remarried when they were kids and her husband had adopted them and changed their name to Wilkinson. Anyway, here's Paul's e-mail to me... "Dennis, I received a short note from KARIN WALTERS ('69) and she included your email and web site. Congratulations on a great site! Funny, after all these yearsm I had forgotten the feeling that the one moment in our lives offered...freedom, without all the bells and whistles. The undeniable feeling of youth... innocence (in a cognitive manner) regained..a Billy Budd aroma. Is it the way everyone reacts? Lost innocence regained. I would love to try and make the reunion. Also, Iwill contribute to your exercise in maintaining your hold on our past. A great job! Let me hear from you." ---Well, Paul it's great to hear from you and welcome to the website. Grab a cup of coffee or a Coke, and spend a few hours here. This website is just like Disney World... you can't see everything in just one visit!. (12/1/99)
NOVEMBER 1999
DON ELDER ('70) [E]
HAS BEEN FOUND AND HIS LIFE IS AN AMAZING
STORY! Saturday night, I got a call from MARSHA
DAVID's mother, here in San Antonio.
Her
other daughter, Dawn, in California, told her that I have been looking
for Don Elder. It seems that Don has stayed in touch with their family,
and Mrs. David called me to give me Don's phone number. I have been
looking
for Don for the past 15 years! It turns out that Don lives right here
in
San Antonio. I gave him a call and we were both thrilled to hear from
one
another. Don brought me up to date on his life. After graduating from
John
Jay, he served three years in VietNam in rescue. Today, he works in the
EP Lab at Methodist hospital. He is married and has two daughters and 3
grandchildren. Here is an amazing story... Don has always known that he
was adopted. He also knew that he was a full-blood American Indian.
His loving and caring adoptive parents were white and have since passed
away. Don has always wanted to know his biological parents and his
heritage,
so eight years ago, he began his quest. Then one day he received a
letter
from a U.S. government agency informing him that someone claiming to be
his sister was trying to find him! Needless to say, he was overjoyed!
As
it turns out, it WAS his real blood sister! He has since met
his
biological mother and his brothers and sisters and what he learned was
amazing! Don found out that he has 7 brothers and sisters and he is a
full-blooded
De'Nanai Indian from Alaska. No, he is not an Inuit
(Eskimo)
but is a member of an American Indian Tribe in Alaska. Don learned that
he had been given up for adoption because his mother was striken with
polio
shortly after his birth and could not care for him. Not only that, but
his birth name is NOT Donald! You're all gonna' love this, Don
found
out that his adoptive parents had changed his name and his real
name is DAVID DANIEL TWO BEARS! He is so excited about my
tracking
him down and telling him about the upcoming reunion. He plans to be
there!
(11/22/99)
My sincere thanks to MRS. DAVID (Marsha and Dawn's mom) for getting in touch wih me. I hereby make her an HONORARY 1970 MUSTANG!
UPDATE: Here's what Don had to say this morning in an e-mail to me..."I can't say enough, or think enough, of how good it was to hear from you!! I had always thought that I didn't want to get involved because, I would loose my memories and they were private and special, but I quickly found that I was wrong!! Thank you so much for bringing all of it back!! It would be a major sin to have, let it all go by, to never have reached a point of making contact. I am going to change that now!! The pictures.......GOD what memories!! Also thank you for the write up and I look forward, excitedly, for E-mails from all my old friends, cause I'm gona write them too!! Incidently.....tell MARIA GALAVIZ ('70) that I said "Hi" and thank her too. I look forward to the re-Union, it's gona be great!! Thanks again my Friend!! ---Well, we have Don's e-mail listed on the web page, so be sure to tell him "Hello." Don, it's great to have you back among the Mustangs! (11/23/99)
MARSHA DAVID ('71) [E] mailed me a donation check and a note to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving. I want to thank her and everyone who has sent me Thanksgiving greeting cards and e-mails. I really appreciate everything you all do. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! (11/22/99)
SHARAL CHADWICK ('73) [E] dropped me a line by e-mail. Take a look... "Dear Dennis, do you remember me telling you that when I first visited and looked at your (this) web site I saw my first high school love? Well just to give you an update..... I was a freshman, he was a senior. When I moved, we kept in touch for awhile and then lost track. It has been 29 years since we last saw each other. He saw my note on your website and emailed me, called me on the phone, and then came to visit me. Can you believe after 29 years, seeing each other! What a trip it was going down memory lane. It was, as if, 29 years had never passed. One of the nice things about this, is he said he had been looking for me for 20 years. Isn't this such an incredible story? I can't believe this happened to me." ---Well, Sharal who the HELL is he???? (11/22/99)
DEBBIE DEBERGH ('71) [E] sent me an e-mail that floored me. She has been in the hospital recently. let me share her e-mail to me with you.. "Hey, Dennis, I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. I've been a little tied up, lately...I'm recouperating at home and on the mend after having mitral value replacement on the 10th of November. I came home on the 13th. They don't keep you in the hospital long this days. All seems to be going well. NO Drivining for 8 weeks, though...bummer. But then, again, I don't have to cook the turkey either! Everyone else is fine. Gotta go... getting tired....take care... Deb." ---Holy cow! You're out of the hospital just three days after heart surgery? Unbelievable!! Deb, you're in my prayers for a full recovery! If there's anything you need, just let us know! Make sure your husband (STEVE SMITH '69) keeps the house clean, and waits on you hand and foot while you recover! Ha! Love from your classmates! (11/22/99)
CONNIE REED ('72) [E] heard aout this web page from a fellow classmate, and before even dropping me an e-mail, Connie sent in a very generous check as a donation to the website. Unbelievable! One visit and she's making donations! I just had to call her personally and thanks her for her kindness. She lives up in Garland, Texas, and will be making plans to be here for the reunionnext year! Thanks so much, Connie!! (11/21/99)
KARIN WALTERS ('69) [E] and I are having a blast e-mailing back and forth, and sharing an occasional phone call, too. Today, she sent me a current photo of herself. She tells me that this picture was taken just last week and that's her on the left side in the photo. (11/12/99)

Oh, my god! Karin, tell me that you're not happily married and that
you adore "husky" men! OK, maybe not "husky".... uhhhmmm...
How about "portly"? OK, maybe I'm not "portly", maybe
I'm sorta' "chunky." OK, so I'm beyond "chunky"...
Could you love a "hefty" guy?.... OK, not "love," how
about, just mess around with one?

Here's another one for you, Dennis...seems to be a group shot for
the
1969 Senior Prom. Unfortunately, I'm not able to recognize two of the
subjects,
perhaps someone else can help out. (L to r) Michael
Anthony,
Mimi Verbois, Roy (can't remember his last name, but I know he has
died),
Lynette Conway, Harley Elliott, Karin Walters, "?" and "?"
The quality of the photo is poor, what can you expect from B&W film
in 1969 on an Instamatic? Well, Karin, the guy to the far right
looks
like Ralph Galaviz, maybe. And was Roy's last name, "Roberts"?
CHUCK OGIER ('70) [E] took some time off from his busy schedule as a 747 airline pilot to drop me an e-mail... "Dennis... ong time, sorry how the time seems to run away from me. Currently I'm in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the month of November and operating throughout Asia, Australia and to the Middle East. Never thought that I would say it, but the 747 holds too much gas! Some very long legs throughout this pattern. Still loving flying the "big iron" around....and sitting in the Captain's seat is great. Gone an awful lot....hope to be home for Christmas this year.....no telling where Thanksgiving will be...will let you know. Take care.......off to Hong Kong then back tonight." --- Hey, Chuck! Pick me up some coffee mugs in those foreign lands! They'd look great in my collection and let me know if you come across any BEATLES stuff, too! Happy skies, my friend! (11/11/99)
SUSAN BREIDENBACH ('71) [E] has gotten in touch with me to give the addresses of some "Missing Mustangs" from the "Class of 1971." Thanks Susan! (11/11/99)
BRENDA DUGGER ('71) [E] and I have stayed in touch over the internet for a few years now. I have a tendancy to do that with former high school girlfriends! (LOL) Brenda tells she has a very successful career as a MARY KAY COSMETICS representative. Mary Kay isn't just for women anymore, either! They've got all sorts of stuff for men, too! So, I thought I'd give her a free plug here on the web page. Check out Brenda's web page at http://www.mymk.com/btrimm or drop her an e-mail at Tmblwd93@aol.com and be sure to tell her that "Dennis sent you!" (11/11/99)
GARY MAESTAS ('69) [E] has outdone himself this time. Gary knows that I collect "landmark" coffee cups. Cups that show my the writing on them or special shape as to where they are from. I have boasted about the 100's I have collected over the year, many of which sent to me by YOU, my classmates. Well, this past summer Gary was in Pisa, Italy and got me a coffee cup that LEANS! I mean this sucker leans just like the picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa that's on it! You should see this! I'd almost be afraid to put coffee in it for fear that it would fall over, but it doesn't. Wow! What a hoot! Thanks, Gary and thanks to your brother, Roni for delivering it. This mug will always have a place of honor in my collection. (11/11/99)
KARIN WALTERS ('69) [E] and I have been chatting by e-mail and phone call these past few weeks. Today, I got an e-mail from her and some surprise photos! Karin writes... "Hi Dennis, I've been digging through a number of envelopes and old (very old) photo albums. Edges are curling up and definitely yellowing. My my where do the years go? Came up with a couple of "doozies". The first one is myself and BRYAN THURMOND ('69) at what I believe to be a Junior Prom of some kind in 1968. The most memorable aspect of this picture and the event itself, was Bryan's effort to order a lei from Hawaii in lieu of a corsage... how thoughtful and unique - eh? Where or where could that "surfer boy" be now? And what is that growing out of my head? Oh yes, one of those rat's nests that one would roll nightly, and don the next day in an attempt to appear to have more hair than one actually had. And those lips, why did we wear white lipstick? All for the sake of beauty????????? The second picture is HARLEY ELLIOTT ('69) and myself at our Senior Prom 1969. How so very pure! Enjoy -- and keep up the good work. Best, Karin" --- ok, Karin, thanks for the photos and let's take a look! (11/5/99)

Whoa!! Look at that hair on Karin!! Like she said in her e-mail,
Bryan
Thurmond was determined to lei her that night and he did! Ok, you nasty
folks, you know what I mean!! (Sorry, Karin, I couldn't resist the
joke!)
Where is "surfer boy" today? Well, the last I heard from a pretty
good source, he's still riding the waves in California.

Hot damn!! What a beautiful couple! And Karin even let the air out
of
her hair! Hubba-hubba!! You look absolutely gorgeous, Karin. Does
anyone
know where Harley Elliott is these days? I haven't heard a word about
him
in years.
OCTOBER 1999
DAVID VERBOIS ('71) [E]
has come through for this website and
the reunion effort in BIG fashion! Today, in the mail, I
received
David's copy of the 1971 John Jay Senior yearbook! Now, we can scan the
Senior pictures and give them their own place of honor here on the
website.
In addition to sending in his yearbook, all the way from Katy, Texas,
David
also sent in a SUPER GENEROUS donation check! Those funds will
be
used to help pay for this website and to cover production costs for the
upcoming newsletter for his "Class of 1971." David, thanks so
much for your generosity!! (10/29/99)
JANICE ANDERSON (?) [E] who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, visited the website, early today, and signed our Guestbook... "Dear Dennis, It is an honor to sign your guestbook. This website is a book of art by those who made it happened. If you remember Linda Anderson, she is my sister. Hello, to everyone that may remember me as Janice Anderson. Hi to Darlene Raymond, Don Hurlock, Jackie Davis, Brenda Gibbs, Pat Harris, Stella Valdez, Roy Valdez, and to those who's name's I've forgotten." ---Good to hear from you Janice! Please stay in touch and thank you for the kind words about this website (10/29/99)
JAMES BAUM ('70) [E] had e-mailed me three different times at three different e-mails and all three had come back to him as undeliverable. Then he figures, he'll just call me and find out what's up. Guess I slipped up and didn't get the word out to everyone on our website change and my new e-mail address.Well, "Baumba" brought me up to date on his life. In June 1995, he moved his family to South Carolina.after only four months, he had to move back here to Texas as his father was dying of lung cancer and passed away on October 13, 1995. His father left James a home and property in Floresville, where he, his wife and four children have been ever since. He has been involved in a few busines ventures, including owning and operating a bakery and a restaurant. Today, James works for the Floresville Indepdendent School District. He has his business degree and is looking to become a teacher. (10/29/99)
JACKIE DAVIS ('71) [E] has sent me a unique request by e-mail. Take a look at something she received by e-mail..."Our class is collecting postcards from around the world. We would especially like to receive cards from the USA. Please ask your readers if they would send us a card from their region showing someting about that area. We are hoping to receive one from every state. Our address is: Mrs. Boyd's Class W. T. Hanes Elementary 2730 Cheyenne Irving, TX 75062"
DOTTIE WEBBER ('71) [E]
and I stay in touch on a pretty
regular
basis. The other day, my mom and I were going through some of our old
family
slides and I came across some of Dottie and I. She was my date for the
Senior Prom. So, take a look...
Wow, what a night that was! Absolutely a vision of
perfection,
beauty
and class! And Dottie doesn't look bad, either! We double-dated with
my sister, Linda and Danny Petro. That was the first time I introduced
Danny to my sister, but that's a whole different story!
Here I am with Danny Petro, our Senior Class President (on the
right).
Danny and I were the best of friends, as close as brothers. We had some
great times in those days... rattlesnake hunting on Hunt Lane with
B-B-Guns
and rocks... buying tobacco pipes our first week of college, so we'd
look
like Ivy League students at SAC... (30 years later, I still have my
pipe,
by the way)... almost killing his next door neighbor thinking he was a
burglar. We always had a blast, always stayed just out of the reach of
law enforcement, and always laughed! Danny was one of the groomsmen at
my wedding back in 1974, (Or was it 1975?) I can't remember. I haven't
seen Danny in over 24 years or talked in 10 years, or so, and he lives
right here in San Antonio. Funny, how when we're young, we think "best
friends" and friendships will last forever. People grow up, grow old,
or outgrow some friendships. That's a shame, a real shame. "Ob-la-di,
ob-la-da, life goes on.... funny how life goes on."
MATT DELANEY ('70) [E] has updated me on his latest escapades, escapes and excursions across America... "Dear Dennis,I'm back in Santa Barbara, and have now moved from Carpinteria to a small and quiet place on the edge of downtown Santa Barbara. My new phone number is (805) 963-7906. I had a great time on my trip, seeing about 20 relatives on my mother's side and 60 on my father's. It was great seeing New York and New England again. Here in California, it's clear and hot. Soon the rains will start, and it will be instant Spring. Hiking season will have begun. However, I'm getting the jump on it by going up to San Luis Obispo this weekend.I'll be sending another extra support check for the reunion, about mid-November. I usually come by at Thanksgiving, but won't be there this year. I'll give you a call around that time, you turkey. Matt" ---I don't know how you do it my friend. You see more of America in one year than I have in 20! Guess that's what keeps you young and healthy! Happy Hiking! (10/26/99)
ROSS RAYMOND ('69) [E] always has time to drop me a funny story, joke or e-mail. Here's his latest...."Dennis, What a great idea, scanning and putting all those pictures on the web. I went to the 70 site first and then to 69 and I made an interesting discovery. You scanned in the wrong people. I studied most of them closely and I do not think I went to school with them. They are kids who could not have been old enough to be seniors. You even have a fellow in there claiming to be ME and I know I never looked like that. I assume at the reunion we will be forced to walk around with "before" pictures stapled to our chest so that people can see how little we have "aged" in 30 years. If you don't provide these base line photos, some people will show up with the photos the post office uses for the FBI most wanted list, passport shots, mug shots or even wedding photos. Hopefully this will not be allowed, but there are some out there who have a twisted sense of humor and will stoop at nothing to distort the truth, you know who they are. I want everyone to know that my nose and ears were never as large as they seem in the class photo. Someone, and I would not put it past you, has "doctored" the PIC in order to bring shame and ridicule to my home. I will not rest until the guilty are brought forward at the reunion. A clever man and a scanner are a dangerous combination. Don't take my word for it, ask some of the others pictured, they will confirm most of this for you. Shocked and humiliated, in Katy, Texas...Ross" ---Thanks for the laughs, Ross! (10/26/99)
ROBERT MOYER ('71) mailed in his $100 reunion reservation check, today, ($90 reunion reservation and $10 for this website). In his enclosed note, he says he thinks this site is excellent and really enjoys it. Well, thanks for the words of praise, Bob. Ed Holley and I certainly appreciate it! Look forward to seeing you at the reunion. (10/15/99)
TONY PELLITIER ('71) [E] has gotten in touch with me by e-mail and writes... "Thanks for the recent mailer regarding next summer's reunion. Sounds like a great idea. I am marking my calendar and certainly hope to be there. I'm also sending a modest contribution to the organization/publicity fund. Hope it is helpful. All is well here, but we are in the midst of a corporate control fight that is right out of a bad episode of Dallas or Dynasty. By year-end, contol of our company (PetroCorp Incorporated) will shift to a company in Tulsa, which now owns 50% of our stock, and our Houston headquarters will be dissolved. I have been offered the position of Executive VP & Chief Operating Officer of PetroCorp, but the job is in Tulsa and has many social complications (Is that the tactful way to say that?). It's a plot Machiavelli would be proud of. No decisions reached yet, but by year-end things will definitely change. Either move to Tulsa or start a new chapter here. Will keep everyone posted. In the meantime, the kids are growing up way too fast to suit me and my hair continues to disappear at a similar rate. I think there is a correlation here, but more research required. Keep up the great work. These reunions would never happen without your efforts." ---Hey, Tony, keep me posted on what happens with your company and if you strike out on your own, let me know if you need a good PR guy!! (10/19/99) UPDATE: He's a man of his word! Today, I received a fantastic check in the mail from Tony. (He calls it a modest check. I want to meet this man's accountant!!) He said to use it in any way I feel is needed, like for this website. Hmmmm, OK, Tony, here's how I'm dividing up your check... 50% of it will be used to purchase stamps for the next newsletter going to your "Class of 1971" classmates in November, 40% of it will go to support this website, as you suggested, and 10% is going to the local Taco Cabana restaurant to buy me some breakfast tacos!! Waacha' think? (10/22/99)
URBAN URBANO ('70) leaves me the craziest and lonnnnnnnnnnnngest messages on my answering machine. Today, he used the entire 10 minutes of the message tape!! I hear from him about once every five months or so. Today, I get home, check my machine, and all I hear is a bongo version of the "Wipeout" drum theme for three straight minutes! I know that RINGO STARR doesn't have my phone number, so who the hell could this be? Then, I hear his laugh... it's Urban! He has just gotten back from a tour in Europe and is the proud father of a new baby boy (that I could hear crying in the background, by the way). Of course, Urban and I go way back, some 30 years when I was a roadie and sometimes "booker" for his first group, "Col. Tyke's Traveling Medicine Show & Musical Band." I've told the stories over the years of the "mischief" we all would get in to. Urban said, he'd have to wait until his new son was in his 20's before he could tell him of our adventures as teenagers. Hey, Urban--- remember, the statute of limitations on some of the things we all did, won't run out for another 30 years! Some of our exploits must remain secrets forever!! PLEASE!! Urban wants to talk to me about some entertainment for the reunion. I'll keep everyone posted. (10/15/99)
CLYDE GIBSON ('70) called me out of the clear blue, today. He said he was in the neighborhood visiting with his mom at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church festival. Clyde tells me he's gonna drop by my house and drop off a check for all this stuff. I haven't seen him since our 25 year reunion. (10/11/99)
CARL UTTERBACK ('71) is a family doctor in Uvalde, Texas. I was out grocery shopping this morning and when I came home I looked at my caller I.D. to find that he had called me while I was out. Carl checks in with me about every six months to see how I'm doing. Pretty cool having a doctor as a friend who gives me free medical advice. Well, Carl since we didn't have a chance to talk, I'll just let you know that I am doing fine. The 4th anniversary of my stroke on October 30, 1995 is coming up and I'm still alive and kicking. High blood pressure still giving me fits, but I'm hanging in there! (10/11/99)
DAVID VERBOIS ('71) [E] checked out this website after receiving his copy of the reunion newsletter and sent me an e-mail, today..."Dear Dennis, I really enjoyed the web site, and decided to scroll through the 1972 yearbook pages. Did we really look like that? It really brought back some fond memories of my four years at Jay, and made me appreciate your hard work even more. Now, if anyone decides to scan in the Class of 1971, I would be more than happy to send in a bribe to lose my picture! Thanks, Dennis. I was sorry to read about John Conte's death. I drove his blue '59 chevy to get my driver's license. It failed inspection, we had only about 30 minutes before they closed, and I remember the frantic run over to the gas station to replace two burned out headlights. Made it back on time and passed. Thanks, John. Just returned from a trip to Kyrgyzstan and I must tell you, that place is beautiful. Scenic national parks, (not crowded like ours), country is 90% mountains. Lake Issyk-Kul' has the coldest water I've ever been in. The people are of the highest caliber and treated me with every kindness. Thanks, Tatyana. I'll keep in touch and may have some addresses of fellow classmates MIA. Contribution for the cause- hey, the check's in the mail...really!" ---"The check is in the mail?" Hmmm, what are the other two lines that go with that? Oh, yeah... "I'm from the IRS and I'm here to help you." and "I promise I won't..." well, nevermind. Good to hear from you David. And just as soon as Ed Holley gets a copy of the senior yearbook for the "Class of 1971" he'll get started on posting th photos. Ed called me tonight and is just about finished with the "Class of 1969" and those photos should be posted within the next week or so. Anyone have a yearbook from 1971 that we can borrow? We need one that doesn't have signatures all over the senior pictures, please. Someone let me know. --Dennis (10/11/99)
MARK & VICKY (DALLAS) NANOS ('71/'72) mailed in a donation to "the cause" in a lovely card and writes... "Dear Dennis, we were pleased to see the info on the up-soming reunion and, as always, appreciate the energy you and your "team" are willing to oput into it. Haven't yet sorted out how it fits on our calendar next year, but we wanted to send you a starter check to cover our future mailings. I think the expanded-years is a great idea. It's such a pleasure to know how people are doing. Best of wishes, Vicky." ---Well, Vicky, if you need an extra incentive to come to the reunion, did you known that your good friend, KATHY KEISOR ('72) is planning to attend all the way from Alaska? Yep! Stay in touch! (10/10/99)
BRADLEY SIMON ('70) doesn't say much and doesn't write much. But his signature on a check every year for twelve straight years says a lot about him. I got his annual donation today and thanks, Brad! I know I can always count on you to be there for us! God, I wish we had more like you that understand it takes everyone to help keep this going. You've done your part, my friend, and you've done it well. Thank you! (10/10/99)
GREG PITNER ('71) was a lost Mustang. The last time that I saw Greg was about 17 years ago when I was the Director of Public Relations for the Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers and he was a store manager for Handy Dan. The company shut down and we went our seperate ways. Fast forward to last week...I mailed his reunion newsletter to him with an old address that my sister had given me and it came back with no forwarding address. I got it back last Monday evening . I went to work the next day. I am the Public Information Officer for the Somerset Independent School District. I'm sitting in my office when a man walks by my office looking for the business dsk. I told him that everyone was out to lunch. So, he wanted to leave his business card,. I told him that I would drop it on the proper desk for him. The man left. I looked at the card and walked over to the business office. The desk was covered with hundreds of invoices, bills, letters, etc. I reached down to set the card on the top pile of papers in the middle of the desk. As I reached down, I looked at the top piece of paper. It was a letter from Home Depot. The letter was signed by a GREG PITNER. Un-friggin-believable! I called the store and sure enough it was Greg! And to top it all off, Greg is the brother of a classmate that has been missing for 30 years, THERESA PITNER ('70)! He tells me she lives in Converse and gives me her number. Later that evening, I call her and she's back with us and on our mailing list! Wow! What an adventure!! (10/10/99)
DAWN DAVID ('73) [E] was told about this website by her sister, Marsha (see below) and Dawn sent me an e-mail. Unfortunately, I have lost the e-mail. I do remember, however, that she told me she recently retired from the Air Froce as a Master Sargeant and lives in California. Hey, Dawn, if you read this, e-mail me again! (10/9/99)
MARSHA DAVID ('71) [E] got the newsletter that I sent to the "Class of 1971," and she visited this website and then sent me an e-mail. She loves this website and writes... "Hi, Dennis! We moved about a year ago from Minnesota down here to Florida to get away from those cold winters. My husband, Bill and I just celebrated out 20th anniversary this past Septemeber. We have two kids- Wes is 13 and our daughter, Mackenze is 4 1/2 years old. We decided it was time to spend more time with the family and less on working so hard, so we bought a big boat and enjoy fishing and cruising around the islands west of the Florida coast. We spend as much time on the boat as we can. We love it! I don't know if we'll be able to make the reunion or not, but I will keep in touch and mail a check to you to help with stuff. Thanks for keeping us all in touch, Dennis. Please tell your sister, Linda, I said 'Hi.'" --- Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! (Sorry, I just couldn't resist using that line from the 'Brady Bunch'!) It's great to hear from you. As you promsied, please stay in touch, touch, touch! (10/9/99)
GLENN HUTTO ('71) [E] is a real trooper! He sent in a second check to replace the one that I accidently threw in the garbage! Glenn had mailed me an envelope full of newspaper articles about the BEATLES. I took them out of this large manila envelope and tossed the envelop in the garbage. About a week later, I called him to thans him for the stuff and he asked if I got the check, too. I said, "What check?" He had enclosed a check in the envelope, too! OOPS!! I threw it out! When he sent me this second check, he enclosed a copy of SHELL-E-GRAM, the newsletter/magazine from the Shell Oil-Chemical Plant in Deer park, Texas, where he works, as a Senior Environmental Laboratory Technician. There was an article about his duaghter, Vikki, receiving a scholarship from Shell. Way to go, Vikki, and way to go Glenn & Karen! Thay had sent me an invitation to Vikki's graduation but I was unable to attend. They are dear friends. Thanks for the donation, guys! (10/9/99)
WARREN WHITAKER ('70) [E] mailed in a generous donation check, as he promised, and also enclosed one of the nicest notes I'ver ever received... "Hey, Dennis! Hope all is going well for you and yours. Thinga sare fine here, loving life on the Blanco River. Here's a few bucks to buy some stamps and I hope it helps. If I need to do more, just gimmie a holler. I appreciate all that you're doing, so do not lose that special insight you have in bringing us all together and sharing so much joy with all your friends. Again, thanks for all you do! Hope to see you soon." ---Warren, thanks for the kind words and the donation. My door is always open to you any time you can visit, my friend! (10/8/99)
We seem to have started something here with these old photos of boyfriends and girlfriends. Anyone having such photos from back in John Jay days, please, e-mal them to me and I will post them on this page. Send them by regular mail and I will scan them and return them to you.
DEBI BURTON ('72) [E] got a kick out of seeing the photos that Jon Davis and I have posted below, and decided to send in a photo of herself and former boyfriend and our classmate, WARREN WHITAKER ('70). What a doll Debi is and take a look at that bewildered look that Warren has on his face! (10/3/99)

Warren has a worried look on his face, or is that his sexy
look?
Is it me or does it look like Debi's dad just asked him his name,
and he said (in his best James Bond fashion...) "Whitaker.
Warren Whitaker."
Debi is as beautiful as ever and looks as happy as can be,
going to the Sweetheart Dance at Lackland Baptist Church.
(Nice touch, painting your arms with white paint, like that, Deb!)
KATHY KEISOR ('72) [E] was my high school girlfriend. She moved to Alaska in 1969. About 25 years later, Kathy and I found one another on line. What a thrill! So, for the past few years we have e-mailed one another or chatted live on the internet, every now and then. I fact, we just chatted this morning. I have a photo of the two of us taken on the night of the John Jay H.S. "Ambassor's Ball," on January 10, 1969, hanging in a frame in the hallway of my home. After seeing the photos JON DAVIS sent (shown below) I thought I'd just scan mine and show it here. Kathy says she's thinking about coming to our reunion next year. I haven't seen her in 30 years, and what's strange is that even though we e-mail one another, chat live on the internet and exchange Christmas cards, neither one of us has called each other on the telephone! Well, after Kathy sees that I have posted this photo, I wonder if she'll still come to the reunion! (LOL) I'll keep y'all posted. (10/2/99)
January 10, 1969... it seems like a lifetime ago. Kathy Keisor and I
get our photo taken
at my house before leaving for the Ambassador's Ball. I still have that
"clip-on" bow tie
and I would give anything to have that much HAIR, again! By the
way, the flower on
my lapel isn't as big as it seems. It's actually about half the size
you see in the photo.
The rest is a pool of blood where Kathy accidently stabbed me with one
of
those humongous pins trying to attach the darn thing to my coat!! My
mom
had to pin
the corsage, I got for Kathy, to her dress. My parents told me that I
still
wasn't allowed
that close to "boobies,' yet. Come to think of it, Kathy told me that,
too!!
JON DAVIS ('70) [E] mailed me a generous donation for this website and the newsletter, along with some fantastic photos from long ago! My thanks to Jon for the donation and for sharing these pictures!! (10/2/99)
Here's a moment caught in time... the beautiful KATHI
BROWN ('70) and Jon. Looks like this was taken at the annual
"Ambassador's
Ball" one of the formal dances held each year at Jay. I spoke with
Kathi's father about a month ago. Kathi is still in the Navy and she
has
recently been transferred back from Okinawa, Japan and is attending a
medical
tech school somewhere on the U.S. east coast. She and her husband, Tom,
are doing great.
Wait until she sees this picture, Jon!
A year or two later, Jon is dating the lovely,
MARILYN MESSICK ('72).
Jon says, she was his first BIGTIME sweetheart and heartbreak. Hey,
remember
the day that Marilyn's father picked her up after school in a
helicopter
that had landed right across the street from the school! Or was that
one
of those urban legends? I wonder where Marilyn is today. I also
remember
those radio station petition signing parties we had a Marilyn's house!
Jon, you sure do have great taste in women! (Or are they just less
filling?) Ha!
I haven't stopped laughing since I first saw this photo. Jon
actually
has his motorcycle sitting in his living room! Recognize any of the
faces
around him? Well, in the front row, the longhaired blonde guy with the
"blitzed" look on his face on the left is none other than CHUCK
EVERINGHAM ('70), then Jon, and
then
the guy with the glasses is HARRY HETRICK ('70).
In the back row, on the left with the black hat is JIMI
CHILTON, in the white hat is WAYNE BRANDON, then RICK
ZARAZINSKI,
and that's STEVE ROBINSON ('70) at the
far
right with the Lone Star beer can in his hand! Man, those were the
days,
weren't they!! Jimi, Wayne and Rick didn't go to John
Jay, but were well known by a lot of us. Today, Chuck
lives in Colorado, Harry lives in
Kentucky
and is doing well after surviving a heart attack, and Steve
owns the Hill Country Humidor in San Marcos, Texas. As for Jon,
he lives in Eugene, Oregon and he promises to be here for the reunion
next
year!
SEPTEMBER 1999
MIKE O'MALLEY ('70) [E]
e-mailed me to let me know his money
order
is on the way to pay for his reunion reservation and an extra donation
to the website and newsletter. Thanks for the early response, Mike! (9/30/99)
DONNA BARNES ('70) mailed me a donation for "our cause" and enclosed it is a wonderful greeting card. That read on the front: "If there were more people like you in the world..." and then on the inside, "...You'd still be special!" Well, Donna, thanks for the kind sentiments! You make me feel great! She writes inside... "Hey, wonderful, Dennis! Thank you for all that you do. I so appreciate you. It was a great July newsletter and especially fun to read about our Reunion in 2000. My husband Gary and I are still up in McKinney (near Dallas) and I'm still in Human Resources at Travelers CitiGroup. Love, Donna." --Thanks for the donation, Donna and thanks for the love, too! (9/30/99)
WILLY LOWE ('71) [E] after a weekend visit to San Antonio is driving his way back to Dallas in his new 2000 Ford Excursion, when he calls me on his mobile phone just outside of Waco, to tell me he had stopped by my house to say, Hi. He knocke on the door, but there was no answer. I asked him why he didn't ring the doorbell and he said he figured I was asleep (which I was) and he didn't want to wake me. So, he was calling me to let me know he had left a donation for the website and newsletter on my door! What a character! Thanks Willy and thanks to Mary, too!! (9/27/99)
STORMY BRADBURY ('71) down in Victoria has sent in a BIG donation to get her class newsletters in the mail!.Thanks, Stormy! (9/26/99)
RUSSELL & PHYLLIS (FORTENBERRY) GRIFFITH ('70/'70) [E] mailed in a donation to keep these fires burning brightly. Whther they were as far away as Saudi Arabia or as near as Houston, Russ and Phyl are always there for me! Thanks, guys! I appreciate the generosity! (9/22/99)
DUKE GARZA ('70) made his first contribution to "the cause" with a generous check and I send out our sincere thanks to Duke and look forward so seeing him after 30 years, at the reunion. (9/22/99)
GAY TITSWORTH FRAZIER ('75) [E] came over to my house, Sunday, 9/19/99 and joined Ed Holley and I sorting, stuffing, labeling, sealing and stamping over 200 newsletters to members of the "Class of 1971." So, to date, we have mailed almost 600 newsletters to our John Jay classmates in 1969-1970-1971. I had not seen Gay since 1973, when I was in college and working part time at Cloth World. She still has her beautiful and catching smile, as well as her great sense of humor! It was a lot of fun seeing her again and she's promised me a spaghetti & meatballs dinner next month! Now, that's something to look forward to! (9/19/99)
DONNA COBURN ('71) [E] sent me an e-mail, today, from her home in Milwaukee. She writes..."Howdy Dennis, I have hardly been on the computer all summer and when I finally do get around to writing you, you disappeared! I tried for an hour to get an email through to you with no luck. I decided to wait a few days in case there was some kind of glitch. Glad you're back. I figured something was going on when I couldn't get you or the website. How has your summer been? Sounds like there aren't enough hours in the day with work and keeping up the letters and website. Wish I were there to help. I'll be sure and get a check to you this week. We have been having some remodeling done on our house since Spring. I'm pretty burned out on the whole thing. I have a lot more I want to do, but I don't think I can stand all the noise and people making messes anymore. I'm going to look around at what's on the market this fall and winter and if I don't see anything I like, I guess I add on to this house. I spent some time in the mountains in Idaho this summer. As always it was hard to leave. Barring any emergencies, I will certainly be at the reunion. My brother, ROBERT COBURN ('69) will be there too. I don't know if you remember VICKI RALLS, who has been my best friend forever, but she will be there too if she hasn't already moved to Salt Lake City by then. She moved to Tacoma during our senior year and came back the following summer. She lives off of Culebra. Her husband works for civil service at Kelly AFB and is part of the down sizing. Their plan is to move next July. The weather is going to really start cooling off here next week. I still hate winter here. I noticed someone else lives here in the Milwaukee area. I think it was MIKE O'MALLEY ('70). His name is very familiar, however I can't picture him. Hopefully I'll see him at the reunion. Heard from CATHY KIRK('70) or DOUG HALL ('70) lately? Doug was in the computer business when I lived in Houston so I'm surprised he hasn't listed his email address with you. Vicki may be able to contact Greg Hall, Joe Estes, and Kathy League about the reunion. I'll let you know if she's able to locate them. Hope all is well with you. Thanks for all your hard work. Love, Donna ---It's always a pleasure to hear from you, Donna. Sorry, I haven't heard a word from any of the folks you've mentioned! Maybe as the reunion gets closer and cloaser, I will. Please stay in touch! Love ya, tooz! (9/18/99)
KATIE MILLER ('69) [E] and I last ran into one another at Pizza Hut about two years ago. Today, I got an e-mail from this sweet girl..."Dennis, You are amazing! I have just looked through the site and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am temporarily using AOL and will send you my "final" e-mail address in the near future. Thank you for all your effort in keeping the classes connected. Lots of changes in my life these past couple of years. I quit Civil Service after 21 years and went to work at our church. My son has been in the Navy for 2 years now, and John and I now have 8 grandchildren. dennis52, do you remember the acorn you gave me the last time we saw each other? Well, I now have a lovely oak tree in my back yard! I'll be in touch. We will be attending the reunion, and are so thankful that you care enough to keep things going after all these years. God bless you!" --- Katie is talking about the fact that I had a sack of acorns that had germinated and when Katie came over to help stuff newsletters about six years ago, I gave her one with big sprouts on it. Glad to hear the tree is growing, Katie! Hope you named it after me! (9/11/99)
DON HARING ('70) [E] shows up on my doorstep this past Thursday evening, as a total surprise! He lives in Hermiston, Oregon, where he works for the Corps of Engineers on the construction of a chemical weapons incineration plant, which is about 2/3 complete. Then he's headed for Huntsville, Alabama for consulting on a new project. Don's in town for a week and spent a two hour visit with me. We had some great laughs, shared some photos, and talked about old times in Brindisi, Italy, and John Jay. Hey Don, still want me to set you up with a PF next July? Just wondering... (9/11/99)
MARIE "TONI" WILSON ('70) called me when she got the latest newsletter. Leaving a message on my machine. I called her and left a message on her machine. It's phone tag, but we'll soon touch base, I'm sure! (9/11/99)
MICHELLE HAYNES ('70) is as crazy as ever these days. It's been a year since I talked with her. I came home to find a message on my answering machine from her, so I called her and got her machine. I hung up without saying a word. Rushed to my computer and recorded the BEATLES song, "MICHELLE" and called her machine again and played the song along with my message in the background. When she got home, she loved it and called me right back and we talked for 30 minutes. She says she's doing great, as is her brother and our classmate, DONNIE HAYNES ('70), who is the general manager at Alamo Toyota! (9/11/99)
JOHN STOCKTON ('70) [E] e-mails me from Omaha..."Dennis, Checked the site.. Nice. Would like to say hi to fellow 1970 grads: ROBERT SPRADLING, MICKEY MAHLER, and DEBBIE PASCHALL. I've been in Omaha now for 25+ yrs. Married with three daughters. ages 25, 22 and 9. Also have one grandchild, age 5. Thats right I'm a grandpa. Now, as "Bill & Ted" say, "CATCH YA LATER DUDE." ---Wait, let me get this straight, John. You have daughters aged 25, 22, and 9!! Ok, from 22 to 9, your wife must have had ONE HELL OF A HEADACHE!! Is your check in the mail? HA! John, please resend me your e-mail address. (9/11/99)
VANCE VERBECK ('69) [E] e-mails me out of nowhere! Always great to hear from someone after so many years! He writes..."My hat is off to you, Dennis, for putting forth so much effort to help keep us in touch with each other. Fine job on the Web page. Very impressive." ---Vance, glad that I could impress you! Now, impress me! Send in a check to help us out! Good to hear from you! YEEE HAAA!! (9/11/99)
JACKIE DAVIS ('71) [E] is happy to have found our site thanks to her brother and our classmate, JIM DAVIS ('70) [E]. She writes... "Hello, Dennis, from another member of the Class of '71, the very first 4-year class to graduate from Jay. My brother, sent me the link here and I've got to say, dennis52, you've done a fantastic job on this page!!! I've been living in Houston for 20+ yrs now but I get back to SA for visits as often as I can. My current status? I'm now single with two grown kids and one beautiful granddaughter. My son, Erik Buihner, son of TOM BUIHNER ('71), still lives with me, is going to college and working towards a degree in criminal justice. My older daughter, Chani, lives in Louisiana and is raising the one of the cutest kids I've ever seen (ok, I'm prejudiced). I've been surfing the 'net for years, keeps me out of trouble I'm MUCH looking forward to the next reunion since it'll be my first." --- And I'm MUCH looking forward to your check in the mail! Ha! Thanks for getting in touch with us, Jackie! Can't wait to see you at the reunion! And, by the way, send me your home mailing address so I can mail you the info! (9/11/99)
CLYDE GIBSON ('70) sends this e-mail..."Hi. Dennis, you've done just a super job on all the things you have done for the classes of Jay. I still am employed at Randolph AFB. Most of this year i spent TDY to Hurricane,UT at a weapons/test track for our government. The next area 51 or what the locals call "Space Mountain. I shall explain more later. I will be on your door steps soon, Clyde 210-658-8747(hm), 210-652-2815(wk) ---Clyde, thanks for checking in. Speaking of "checking"... get the hint? By the way, your e-mail link was messed up! Please send your e-mail address to me! (9/11/99)
MARTIN "MARTY" SMITH [E]-- didn't graduate from John Jay, but sends in this e-mail..."My brother Steve Smith from the Class of '69 sent the web address to this site to me, and I am very glad he did. Great job on the site!! While I did not graduate from John Jay (g.e.d.), I enjoy this site very much. I do have one regret, and that is I did not graduate from Jay like my brother. I have always felt like there was something missing, a sense of loss, for not staying in school, but I would not change my life for I have a great one here in Seattle with my wife and children. Good luck and many thanks, Marty Smith" ---Thank you for the kind words, Marty! Tell you what, because I AM THE ALL POWERFUL KEEPER OF THE FLAME, THEREFORE, I HEREBY, NOW, DECLARE YOU AN OFFICIAL JOHN JAY MUSTANG ALUMNI AND FELLOW CLASSMATE WITH ALL THE HONORS AND PRIVILEGES THEREOF! Now, send me a check to cover the cost of all this stuff!!! By the way, send your address, too! (9/11/99)
WANDA DARLEY ('70) [E] dropped me a line by e-mail to let me know she and her husband Seagal, will be attending the reunion. She also writes..."Dennis, do you remember PAULA EDGIN? At one time, she was a "Captain" of the Pep Squad. She left John Jay near the end of our sophomore year. She was visiting her mother in Abilene, this past July, and drove down here to San Antonio to see me. Paula now lives in Williamsbug, Virginia and teaches at an academy in Newport News. She has a 20 year-old sone at the University of Georgia. Paula is well, happy and still looking great." ---Well, Wanda, I checked our sophomore yearbook and found Paula's photo. Now, I remember her! Great that you got to see her. Hope you told her about our upcoming reunion and this web page. She's more than welcome to come to the reunion because, ONCE A MUSTANG ALWAYS A MUSTANG! Thanks for the news! (9/11/99)
MATT DELANEY ('70) [E] mailed in a BIG check to help with the reunion newsletters and I immediately went out and bought some stamps. Thanks, Matt! He also sent me a bunnh of new addresses for underclassmen, including the Foster sisters: RENITA FOSTER ('71) [a former girlfriend of mine, by the way], LILA FOSTER ('74) and SHERRY FOSTER ('79). Hope they can all make the reunion! (9/11/99)
WES BENDELE ('70) does only one thing faster than win races at the dragstrip and that's sending in a check every time we ask! I received a donation check from him and his wife, KANDACE PIERCE ('72), today. Thanks, Wes! Thanks, Kandy! Love you both! (9/11/99)
CARL JENSEN ('70) has become the second paid reservation from our class for the reunion. He has also sent in HUGE extra donation to cover the extra reunion newsletters and this web site. He also sent in his annual contribution to my coffee mug collection! All this in one box in the mail! Carl is a retired Colonel from the Air Force and now works with SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) In his letter, Carl writes... "Dennis, I got your newsletter sometime back and have been on the road, so this is the first opportunity I've had to tell you once again, 'GREAT JOB!' I am extremely grateful for the time and effot that you put into both the newsletter and the webpages to keep us abreast of what is happening to the Jay family. Your articles always stir some great memories and always are good for some hearty laughs. As you know, I missed our 25 year reunion because I was in Kuwait. Because of my travels, I never know where I'll be. I am sending in my reservation funds at this time. If, for some reason I cannot make it to the reunion next year, please use the money to cover someone who might not be able to attend otherwise. Well, it's time for me to send you one of my company's mugs. You are getting the "Blue & Gold" style, which are usually reserved for people we really want to suck up to and sell something to! Hope you are impressed. We're headed to Las Vegas, next weekm on another business trip. (Always another casino to play.) It's my lifelong ambition to play craps in every major casino in the world. I was doing pretty well in achieving that goal until all the casinos began springing up on the Indian Reservations! Then, throw in all the river gambling boats and the ones sitting on the Gulf coast, the quest will never end! LOL. Well, again, dennis52, great job, and thanks for keeping the spirit alive. Hope to see you in december when I visit San Antonio family and friends for Christmas. Take care, Carl" --- From Air Force Colonel to international playboy & gambler. Wow! What a job and what a life, Carl! Thank you for the compliments, the fantastic donation, the paid reunion reservations and the great coffee cup!! Your charity is deeply appreciated. By the way, carl, please send me your e-mail address. (9/5/99)
BILL NABORS ('69) [E] a "Lost Mustang" has been found after 30 years, thanks to ROSS RAYMOND ('69) [E]. Ross sent me a link to an internet site where people can randomly sign up in an international high school registry. I visited the site and found Bill's e-mail address and wrote to him. He's glad to be back among us! Thanks for the tip, Ross! (9/5/99)
AUGUST 1999
ROY HUBBARD ('70) has
been returned to jail for parole violations. He can receive mail, if
anyone
would like to write to him. He is in prison, here, in San Antonio, but
will soon be returned to Huntsville. Reach him at: Bexar County
Adult
Detention System, Roy Donald Hubbard/1049/2CD13, 200 N. Comal Street,
San
Antonio, TX 78207.
MATTHEW DELANEY ('70) [E] always stays in touch, whether by e-mail, phone call, post card or letter. Here's what he had to share with me in three recent e-mails... "Dear Dennis, I had a great time on my hiking trips recently.Yosemite was so beautiful that I just hung out there at Tuolumne Meadows and didn't go farther south along the eastern wall of the Sierras. I went to places like Lembert Dome, Delaney Creek (really!), Twenty-Lakes Basin, and Tuolumne Falls. I felt like John Muir. You must be working like a madman on all this reunion stuff, so, to turn a phase on its head, let's be careful in there! I'm sure that you're up to your ears in work on this, so I'll just hit the web page for news. You're doing a great job. How did this kind of stuff get done before we had the technology? It doesn't surprise me that the other classes have not been as well-informed as ours. Unless someone is as organized and persistent as you, it just doesn't happen. First, I will check my records for addresses for persons with whom I'm in touch from other classes and will e-mail them to you tomorrow. Second, I get paid Tuesday the 31st, and will send in a $50 contribution, then. That, of course, will not be for my slot at the reunion, but is some extra, and will not be the last one I'll send. Some of us will have to pop for a little more, but I'll bet if you calculated the time you've spent so far on all our reunions, paid even just at minimum wage, you'd see that it would be enough to retire on. I think the class can certainly afford to pay for your slot, and even for two if Cindy Crawford (or whoever you fantasize about) finally comes to her senses and hunts you down. I am going back East for a month from mid-September to mid-October, but will have InterNet access during much of that time. Hang in there. Matt" ---Thanks for all the compliments, Matt, I appreciate that. And thanks for all the mailing addresses of the underclassmen that you know. No one else has responded to my plea for address updates like you have. These are the times that I get so discouraged about doing the reunions. So many people sit there with the information that I need and don't do a damn thing. A simple phone call, e-mail, or letter would help out such a great deal. Sometimes, I really wonder if any of this is worth it. But thanks for the help you provide. (8/28/99)
DEBBIE BURTON ('73) [E] surprised the bee-jeebers outta' me while I was goofing off on line. All of a sudden I get a message on my screen that says, "HI, DENNIS!" and I don't have the faintest idea who it is! Then, she identifies herself as Debi Burton and I asked if she was the sister of ROY BURTON ('71) [E], she said yes, and then I knew who she was! Debi was formerly married to our classmate, MIKE GARDNER ('70) [E]. She moved to La Quinta, California, back in 1979, after the divorce. She has two wonderful sons, Patrick and Bradley. Pat is married and lives in San Antonio and Brad live at home in La Quinta. Debi is an Registered Nurse specializing in Orthopedics. She tells me she found our site on the web and spent hours reading and exploring every detail, every picture, every news item, and she loves it!!!! She was even able to get in touch with old friends that she hadn't heard from in years, and years, when she found the e-mail links page. She even got in touch with our classmate, WARREN WHITAKER ('70) [E] in Austin and they had a great time catching up on each other's lives. It gives me such a thrill to know the work I do on this web site and with the newsletters bring friends together after all these years. As for her brother ROY BURTON ('71) [E], Debi writes... "I don't know how soon my brother Roy will check out the website. He has a very slow computer and doesn't spend the time on the Internet like I do. But just to let you know. Roy is a Physical Therapist and works at for an outpatient sports medicine practice. He lives in Palm Springs, Ca. He has a beautiful wife named Kim, also a physical therapist, and the greatest 9 year old little boy named Jared, (I am his aunt and a little prejudiced). dennis52, thanks again, you are an excellent Keeper of the Flame...you are awesome!" ---Debi, it's good to hear from you and thank you for the kind words! Please be sure to stay in touch!! You have a "sunshine" quality about you that comes thru when we chat online and thru your e-mail! Hope to see ya' at the reunion. (8/22/99)
PAUL "RANDY" BEATY ('70) [E] checked in with me by way of a very generous CHECK! Thanks for the wonderful donation, Randy! He tells me that he's retiring from the Air Force in January. I guess with 20+ years. Right, Randy? He's stationed in Killeen, Texas with the 3D WEATHER SQUADRON. Hey, Randy, see what you can do about cooling the weather down for the reunion next July. We're counting on you!! (8/22/99)
CATHY BACON ('70) [E] has returned to the good ol' USA and E-mails me... "Hi, Dennis, Thanks for all the hard work--I'm back at the Pentagon doing my normal job now. The time in Italy at the CAOC (Combined Air Operations Center) was very fulfilling. One thing that was uncanny was that I ran into 4 other Texans there--JOHN C.CLARK ('69) his sister, GAIL CLARK ('70), is our classmate; a guy who graduated from Holy Cross--our early archrival in football; and then two of my AFROTC classmates from Texas Tech. It was like "old home week!" Hadn't seen any of them since graduation(s) in Texas, just a FEW years ago. We've got the reunion dates penciled on the calendar, and are tenatively planning to attend. Will be sending a check for the reunion and for a contribution to your newsletter production costs. Want to thank you again, Cath" ---It's always great to hear about your adventures and career in the Air Force, Cathy. Hope you make it to the reunion and glad you're back here safe and sound! (8/22/99)
JIM DAVIS ('70) [E] just got on the internet and one of the first things he does, is check out this web p-age and write to me... "Hey, Dennis, et. al. Just got my first computer and this is my first E-mail. Jim Davis here in sunny wet Florida planning for the 30th reunion next summer, hopefully will make it. Our new address here is 127 Lake Winnott Rd, Hawthorne, FL 32640. I was devastated to hear of MR. SCHREIBER's demise and of SONNY GARCIA ('70). Keep me informed for events and people who might be coming this year. I hope JOE HAZEL ('70) makes it this time along with STEVE KELLEY ('70). I haven't seen them since graduation.well, hope to see youn soon as my son, Tom will be taking Army training at Fort Sam around Xmas time and I hope to drop in on you then. Good luck and my E-mail address is JDaavis111@cs.com Best wishes to all. ---Jim, welcome to the internet and hope to see you soon! (8/22/99)
DONNA STEPHENS ('70) [E] out in Corpus Christi, is being hit by Hurricane Bret, as I write this. She dropped me a line in the GUESTBOOK... "Hey Dennis, Do you just look for work or what? You can count on me for your annual donation. Visited with Monna this past week in Grapevine. We both are well and busy. Am leaving town this weekend for Sante Fe and the Grand Canyon. I'll be back in touch with you soon. I hope to be able to help at the reunion on Friday night! Ciao for now." ---Donna it's always great to hear you. Please be sure to give CAROL LIPSEY a call about helping out with the Friday night social. Thank you for always being here for me and the class!! (8/22/99)
ROSS RAYMOND ('69) [E] sent me an e-mail, today. He always has a strange way of putting things when he writes to me. Take a look at his latest correspondence by e-mail and have a chuckle... "Dennis, I logged onto the website and I had to wonder what you had been smoking. WOW, what a beginning image. I thought Iron Butterfly had gotten access to your password and redesigned the site. But then again, it looks like something your fertile and creative mind would naturally gravitate towards. We plan to attend the reunion so look out. Like so many others, who want to attend, I have concluded there are a couple of items I must begin working on immediately. I have to buy some updated trendy clothes, lose 100 pounds, dye my beard brown, develop a personality, learn to be more respective of others, brush my teeth, use mouthwash and then I have to begin work on some of the tougher self improvement items. Where will it all end? Heck, if I had to do all that I would not go. But I want to go, so I will just come as is and let the chips fall where they may. So once again, look out Raymond is on the way! Money to follow. The check is in the mail, the cash is on the truck and I won't ..........." ---Gee, Ross, kinda dangerous to leave that last word blank!! As for the mouthwash- GOOD MOVE! Ha! (8/21/99)
JON DAVIS [E] has a brand new E-mail listing on the links page, thanks to RANDY TILLMAM ('70) [E] by way of PAUL SCOTT (70) [E] who has also just been listed. (8/21/99)
RANDY TILLMAN ('70) [E] sent in a very hefty check to support this web site and to help cover the expenses of the reunion newsletters that I will be sending out every other month starting in September. Muchos gracias, mi amigo!! He also sent me a beautiful "tin" coffee cup from Chimney Rock Park! Of the hundreds of cofee mugs that I have collected, I only have three "tin" cups. This is a great addition to my collection! Thanks, Randy. Oh, by the way, he send his best regards to everyone and says that he and his wife, Judi, can barely wait to see everyone at the reunion! (8/20/99)
RICHARD SOLLINGER ('70) [E] dropped me a line by e-mail and says.... Hello, Dennis, how are you getting along? I'm recovering from a broken wrist. Who would have thought that racketball was a full contact sport! Well, the wall thought it was, anyway. It was a foot closer than I thought it was. The bone is healed but the nerves are still damaged and the Dr's. say it will be another year before the numbness will go away. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody, again, at the reunion. Hi to all. Write sometime, I'd love to hear from any and all classmates." ---Rich, it's always good to hear from you. Off hand, I can't remember if you're in Oregon or Washington, but next time you see BIGFOOT, tell him I said, hello!! (8/20/99)
DOUG CRAWFORD ('70) [E] mailed me a super generous check, today, to help cover the costs of producing and mailing the next reunion newsletter scheduled for September. In his note to me, he writes... "Dennis, Sorry I have been so bad about helping you out. I would like to help on the reunion, so count me in. And, YES, I still owe you a dinner! You have no idea how long it takes to fatten a calf!! (Old Bible story about prodigal children or something!) Give me a call and let me know what I can do. By the way, check out "www.reunited.com" for "Class of 1974" info. Thanks for all you do, dennis52!!" ---Hey, Doug, no apologies necessary. You have always been there for me and the class every time we needed you. I wish we had 100 more people as generous, as you, with their time as well as their donations! Tell you what, please call CAROL LIPSEY [E] at (830) 980-3177 ASAP, and let her know you can help with the Friday night social at the school. That's where we really need help right now! Thanks for volunteering. I'll be sure to check out that web site, too! All the best to and THANK YOU SO MUCH for the donation to this cause! ---Dennis (8/18/99)
MICKEY MAHLER ('70) [E] Was the first person on my mind when I heard about the tornado hitting Salt Lake City, Utah, last week. That's where Mickey lives. I sent him an e-mail to see if he and his family were OK and if there was anything I could do. Today, I received an e-mail reply from Mickey... "Dennis, We're fine, thanks for your concern The tornado hit the middle of town, and we live about 12 miles south of town. WHEW!! I was at work at the time, which is only about 5 miles south. I work on the side of a mountain and have a great view of the city out my office window and I saw the whole thing! It was incredible to say the least. Knowing that you're safe and seeing it at the same time was very nice. Hey, tell Danny Padron to start making plans for that baseball game at the reunion! Best Wishes Mick" ---It's good to hear that you and the family are fine, Mick! Stay in touch, my friend, and bring a whiffle ball with you to the reunion next July!! (8/18/99)
KAY COMPTON ('71) [E] has officially become the VERY FIRST person to confirm their reservation for the reunion and has sent in her check!! WAY TO GO, KAY!! Gonna' save you a dance, girl!!!!
MATT DELANEY ('70) [E] Last night, I sent out an e-mail to close to 100 of our classmates about our upcoming 30-Year Reunion. Within minutes of sending it, I received a response from Matt, out in California, who e-mailed back: "Dennis---You caught me just as I was taking off for nine days, but I checked out the website and got a kick out of it. I will read it in detail when I get back. I'm off to Yosemite, the Ansel Adams Wilderness, the John Muir Wilderness, and Kings Canyon National Park on a series of day hikes. We will do serious reunion next summer. Looking forward to it. Matt." ---Hey, Matt, be carefull, don't get eaten by any bears! (8/14/99)
CHARLES "BUBBA" ABEL ('70) [E] was the next person to respond to my e-mail and was the first to volunteer to help with the Saturday & Sunday reunion events! Thanks Bubba! (8/14/99)
MARGARET HARDEN ('70) was lost, was found, but still lost!! After 30 years, I found Margaret through a worldwide "classmates" site called Classmates.com. She registered herself with their files, as I did a long time ago. There's only one thing, you have to pay to be a member to be able to access e-mail addresses or regular mail addresses with their system. I can see Margaret's name on the register, she can see mine, but she probably has no idea that I do these reunions for our class. So, I have no way to contact her without paying to join the site. I can't justiy that for just one person, so, if anyone has a membership to Classmate.com, please send me Margaret's e-mail and/or home address, ASAP!! (8/14/99)
STEVE SMITH ('69) & DEBBIE (DEBERGH) SMITH ('71) [E] have moved back to San Antonio after many, many years! They e-mailed me... "Hello, Dennis. We hear you are teaching. We are here in SA...now... Is there a reunion in July of 2000? Please inform us of things. Tell all, hello, for us. Deb"... Well, Deb & Steve, I'm not a teacher. I am the Public Information Officer (PIO) for the Somerset Independent School District which is about 15 miles southwest of San Antonio. As for the reunion, well you've come to the right place! (8/6/99) UPDATE: Well, I just received a check in the mail from Steve and Debbie and I want to say "THANKS SO MUCH" for the donation! Steve and Debbie aren't even in our class, but they support this web site! And what an extra delight, too! Debbie wrote SWAK (Sealed With A Kiss) on the back of the envelope!! Gee, it's been 30 years since a girl sent something like that to me! Guess it was my girlfriend, KATHY KEISOR [E], that last did that way back when, in 1968! What a hoot!! Thanks, Deb and BACK AT 'CHA!! (8/13/99)
WADE HOOD ('70) [E] sent me an e-mail, last month, saying he bet he had a coffee mug for me that I didn't have and probably had never seen. He knows that I collect "landmark/city/state/country" theme coffee mugs that show where they are from. So, I said, "Show me the mug!" Well, today, I got the mug in the mail and WOW!! It's from Carlsbad Caverns and I have got to say, it really is the MOST UNIQUE coffee mug in my collection!! This mug actually has a cave running right through the center of the mug with stalagmites rising from the cavern floor. You can see right through the side of the mug to the other side, and push your finger all the way through the cup!! It is really cool! Thanks, Wade. I am very impressed and very gratefull! (8/11/99)
BOB WILLIAMS ('69) [E] lives in Houston, Texas, and just discovered us on the world wide web. He writes... "Dennis, You are doing a great job on the web site, I have thoroughly enjoyed looking through it, since I have signed onto the guest book, ROSS RAYMOND ('69) [E] and MICKEY MAHLER ('70) [E] have contacted me. Good to see that the Class of '70 is keeping up with each other, wish we had one of these for the Class of '69. I didn't see however, where to send the money for the web site. I am looking forward to the reunion. You seem to be enjoying life, again, it was really good hearing from you and keep up the good work. I was in a mall here in Houston last year and the Silver Spurs from John Jay were there getting something to eat, I went up to them and started talking, my daughters were with me and were so embarrassed!! See you next July." ---Hey, Bob, it's always great to hear from you older guys! As for a web page for your class, jump Danny Padron's butt about it!! Wow! Could it really be that you didn't see where to send money for this web site? I must be losing my touch!! Well, Buck-O, send your donation made out to ME and mail it to: 7439 Lancewood Lane, San Antonio, TX 78227-1001. Stay in touch! (8/10/99)
MRS. PEGGY CARNAHAN was a one-of-a-kind teacher at John Jay. Remember her? Her classroom was known as "Carnahan's Corner" in the science department. They were doing all sorts of weird things in those classes! Man, these were serious about science in her room. They had animals in there, things growing and reproducing, creepy, slimey creatures (other than the students themselves) and all sorts of "mad scientist" stuff. I remember hearing that the students HAD to prick their fingers to look at their own blood under the microscope!! Thank God, I had MR. BARTELLA for biology! (I sat at a lab table with DEAN DUNN ('69) [E] and CLEVE HUGHES ('69) geez, the stories I could tell about those two clowns!!) Anyway, Mrs. Carnahan is on the faculty of Our Lady of the Lake University, now, and she was involved in a special program for children at risk of dropping out of school at the school district where I work, Somerset ISD. I had not seen her for 30 years, when she attended the August 2nd school board meeting the other night. She heard someone say my name and she turned to me and asked if I remembered her. Well, her hair is a bit gray, but that wild "Dr. Frankenstein" sparkle is still in her eyes. I didn't know who she was until she said, "dennis52, I'm Peggy Carnahan." Wow! We got to visit for a while and I just wanted to let eveyone know, she'd doing great. (8/7/99)
STEVE MAYS ('70) [E] has been spending too much time around nuclear reactors! Today, I received his annual donation for "the cause" and it's enough to choke a horse! Steve actually does work around nuclear sites as he is an inspector. He sends best wishes to everyone and hopes to make our reunion in July 2000. Steve, thank you so much for your tremendous generosity and words of encouragement these many years! All the best to you, Barbara, and the triplets! (8/6/99)
JOHN HOLSTON ('71)- [E] tracked us down on the internet and writes... "Dennis, my name is John Holston class of 1971. I was web surfing and came across your web page, it's excellent you must have worked you butt off to put it together. I bookmarked it so I will have easy access to it. I will send you a contribution soon. I'm a teacher in Tyler,Tx.,so you will have to wait until the 20th of the month for some funds. dennis52, I didn't see anything about our class reunion, I heard they may combine several classes together and have it next summer. If Linda is still putting them together for our class, can you send me some info? I came across Glenn Hutto's e-mail and I dropped him a line, I know that you and he were friends also. You will get my e-mail address with this message, if you would post it I would appreciate it. One last thing dennis52, the portion of your site about Captain Gus was great, brings back the kid that still lives in all of us as we hit middle age. I'm 46 and I still watch my cartoons and Three Stooges, it helps to have a satellite dish and 250-300 channels. How did we get by with 3-4 channels in the ancient days? Technology is good. Thanks, please keep me informed. John Holston"... John it's good to hear from you and, yes, your class is invited to this reunion. So read the information on this site about the reunion and you're welcome to attend. I'll be watching my mailbox around the 20th for you-know-what! LOL... Thanks! (8/6/99)
MIKE O'MALLEY ('70) [E] has found us on the Internet! He writes..." How 'bout them PACKERS!?! Does anybody remember Don Williams? If you know where he is, please notify. Hello Dr. Utterback! Hope to see you next summer." ...We hope to see you, too, Mike! Welcome back to the Mustangs! (8/6/99)
DEAN DUNN('69) & SANDY WOODS DUNN ('70) [E]- Found this site and e-mails me... "Hey, Dennis, love the web site! Hope all is well with everyone. Sandy and I have been possibly married longer than any classmates out there. Almost 31 years." ...Good to hear from the two of you. We your marriage has my 3-year fiasco beat, that's for sure! Stay in touch. (8/6/99)
JULY 1999
KAY COMPTON ('71) [E]
has once again been so generous as to
make a donation to keep this web site going and our twice-a-year
newsletter
in production. Gee, she's in the "Class of 1971" and does
it! I can always count on Kay to be there for us. Thanks, Kay! Love
you!

CAROL LIPSEY ('70) [E] is having a blast getting to know the Internet and how to run around the world of AOL. She e-mails me..."Dear Dennis, As I learn more about computers, the more I don't know! I feel like the granny that's cooked on her stove her whole life and someone gives her a microwave..ahhh! I was just in this block, filled it out and pressed clear!!..ahhh! Without my daughter, by my side, I'm lost. I shouldn't of had coffee!...Great web-site, by the way, dennis52!! Like I said, the more I learn..I'm just fascinated with what you've done here, it's amazing to me...My husband and I look forward to the reunion July/2000. I expect to see "Hal" the computer in "2001 Space Odyssey," as we draw closer..Where's KATHY KIRK ('70) ?? I'VE MISSED YOU!! I haven't seen CAROLYN SPARKS ('70) in ages, nor WANDA DARLEY ('70) [E], DONNA BARNES ('70), and there's no excuse for SHARON HINDMAN ('70), she only lives down the street! I take the blame, I should force her out of the "Iron Skillet" once in awhile..I also heard SHARON GOODYKOONTZ ('70) [E] lives out here, I've never seen her, Bulverde is NOT all that big, even though we have 4 mayors, N,S,E,W!! Actually, it probably takes 4 to fight annexation..Austin could be next.. I'ts been good to visit with DENISE RUPP ('70) [E] at Sam's, comparing kids and groc.!! Couldn't get too much visiting in with people trying to grocery shop, can you imagine! They could shop someplace else while we visit! Is this little block I'm writing in for a little message??? Must be the coffee, again! Looking forward to visiting you all at the reunion if not sooner. Thanx, again, Dennis, for this great production of a site. The Lord bless you with all that you need from your classmates and also with surprises!! You're a good friend to all of us See you at the reunion planning meetings. Now, let's see what button to push... Love ya', Carol" --- Well, Carol you've been pushing my buttons for years! LOL... I know eveyone is wondering where your comments are about our recent date on my birthday. Hmmmm, should we share them with everyone?? Nah, I better not... I don't wanna make Clair or Karen jealous! And come to think of it, I don't want your husband, Richard, coming after me either! Hey, when are those beautiful and sexy women friends of yours coming to meet me? YEEEE HAAA!! (7/22/99)
JAY FERGUSON ('70) [E]- E-mailed me... "I just saw this web site for the first time. Great job, Dennis! I really had a great time at our 25th Year Reunion back in 1995 and look forward to our 30th Year Reunion in 2000. As I am the Y2K Project Manager for my company, I will need a break by then." --Hey, Jay-bird! Thanks for the kind words! (7/19/99)
MATTHEW DELANEY ('70) [E] has joined the Internet revolution and sends this e-mail... "Dennis-- I got the newsletter a bit late because I've just moved and haven't sent all my changes of address. I now live in the little town of Carpinteria, just down the coast from Santa Barbara, but I get my mail in Santa Barbara. My new address is: P.O. Box 452, Santa Barbara, CA 93102 and my phone number is (805) 684-7979. As I mentioned when I talked to you, I'll be able to help with the reunion. I expect to be in San Antonio in November of 1999 and in March or April of 2000, so I'll probably be available for meetings or work parties at those times. In early August, I can send you a contribution. I'm on the Internet quite a lot, and I have rarely seen a web site as beautifully put together and as complete as ours is. I hope you've upgraded your resume to include webmaster. The waving flags at the top of this web page are a kick. Life screams on here. As usual, in my hiking and campin adventures, I've tried to cover the tri-counties (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura) as much as possible this spring and summer, hiking parts of the Sespe, San Rafael, Santa Lucia, and Silver Peak Wildernesses. It's been a good year so far, and I'm looking forward to a trip to the Eastern Sierra above timberline in another month. I was very sorry to hear of the untimely deaths of MR. DAN SCHREIBER and MARY LOUISE CLAYTON ('70), especially. It's getting to be that time of life, when so many friends are going. I'm trying to squeeze each day. Dennis, thanks for all the effort you put forth. I've noticed that not all the John Jay classes seem to have reunion activity going. There are just not enough like you. All the best! Matt" ... Thanks for your kind words, Matt, and hope to see you soon! (7/17/99)
JON DAVIS ('70) [E] and JIM DAVIS ('70) are the only two people in our class with the "Davis" last name, to my knowledge. They aren't related to one another in any way. Jon lives in Eugene, Oregon, and Jim lives in Hawthorne, Florida. That's about as far away as two people can get without leaving the continental United States. So, it was a strange coincidence that both their newsletters came back, this time. Both have stayed in their respective cities, just moved to new homes, I guess.
JOE HAZEL ('70) [E] out in Omaha, Nebraska sent in this e-mail: "Dennis, I just received the latest newsletter, and was saddened to read about Mr. Dan Schreiber. He was one of the best instructors I ever had at Jay HS. Very sorry to hear about that. It happens that I will be in San Antonio the weekend of November 6 for a family get together. Please send me any particulars on the golf tournament in Dan's memory. I would like to attend, and perhaps a couple of my brothers. Would need to know tee times available and cost. Again, thanks for your efforts on the newsletter, Joe"... ---Thanks for the e-mail, Joe. Everyone is still affected by the death of Mr. Schreiber. He touched so many lives. Good to hear you'll be in San Antonio. It's been 30 years since I've seen you. Did you know that I've gained a little weight, here and there? Just wanted to warn you. As for the gold tournament, that is really being handled by members of the "Class of 1978." I will forward your letter to them. Stay in touch, my friend. ---dennis52 (7/14/99)
LINDA BOMBERGER ('70) [E] sent me an e-mail with this news... "Happy belated Birthday, Dennis! Don't feel bad, my mom's gift to my husband on his 50th birthday, this year, was an AARP membership. Just got caught up on the web site and newletter. You are just too darn funny....... sounded like you and Carol were on that dreaded "first date"! Reading the web site gave me an idea I wanted to pass along to everyone. I file the state and local taxes for my company each month and received the following information from the state of Texas. Starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 6th until midnight Sunday, August 8th there will be "NO" state or local taxes levied on the purchase of general use clothing and shoes within the state. This does not apply to special use items such as golf shoes or the ever popular square dancing dress. <LOL> Handbags, jewelry and hats are not included but something like basketball shoes that could be used for everyday wear would be included. Retail merchants are suppose to be receiving information on this from the state and anyone wanting more information can probably call their local tax office. Now if everyone would wait until that weekend to buy school clothes for the kids or maybe add to their own fall wardrobes, they could take the money they save on taxes and send it to you for the web site and reunion expenses. Don't know how many alumni still reside in the state but surely between the classes of '69, '70 and '71 a few dollars could be added to the old bank account. Anyway it was an idea I thought I'd throw out. Linda" ...---Sounds like a great idea, Linda. Thanks for the suggestion! (7/12/99)
LEONARD SAAVEDRA ('70) [E] writes to tell me that he and his partners have opened their second "LEGENDS 8" store. The new location is in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The first store is in Billings, Montana. Leonard decribes them as a cross between PIER 1 and HOBBY LOBBY. Good luck on the new store, Len.
KAY COMPTON ('71) [E] e-mailed me..."HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dennis! I'm a day late, but ..I'm sending a donation today, and wanted to let you know that I think those lawyer-types might be interested to know that I think the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will be in San Antonio on the same dates as the Reunion, next year. (I'm going to confirm this with my contacts in Austin, and I'll let you know). Anyway, it might give some of us the opportunity to make the trip a "business / pleasure" trip and write some of the expenses off - or whate
